NEW LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

FROM THE LIBRARY ARCHIVES… 1952Extract from the report of the Deputy Co. Librarian, Mr. Stephen Tuohy,

as published in the Clare Champion of September 13, 1952.

CHILDREN’S LIBRARIES“The establishment of children’s libraries is a more pressing problem especially in view of the vast flood of questionable and in many cases very objectionable “comics” which are now finding their way into so many homes. In the country districts, thanks almost entirely to the co-operation of our teachers, the problem is not quite so serious. We have our 100 small juvenile centres scattered throughout the county. In the towns however the position is most unsatisfactory – we have no separate libraries for children in Ennis, Kilrush, Ennistymon, Corofin, Killaloe, Kilkee – our largest towns, and we know only too well what parents’ views are on our failure to provide them. We shall continue to seek a way out of the difficulty and the Co. Council has recently given us a helping hand so far as Ennis is concerned, where our problem is acute, by allowing to the Library the remaining portion of the old Infirmary; where we hope that as soon as money for renovations can be scraped together, we will arrange to provide a lending library for children only.”

LOOKING TO THE FUTURENEW COUNTY LIBRARY PROJECT

The proposed county library project will see a new library building developed at the site of the existing Glór facility in Ennis providing a new library centre for Clare to replace the existing De Valera Library on Harmony Row. The completed project will feature a new public library, administration headquarters, local studies centre and exhibition space.

Within Clare Co. Council a steering committee has been established for the duration of the project. The Project Co-ordinator is County Librarian Helen Walsh and the Project Manager is Ruth Hurley, Clare County Council. Keith Williams Architects have been selected to design the new building.

The estimated €8.6m flagship county library project has been allocated a €3m capital grant under the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government’s Capital Funding Programme for Public Libraries. An additional €1m in EU funding has been granted by the Southern Regional Assembly’s Operational Programme 2014-2020. Clare Co. Council will fund the balance of €4.6m.The project is currently at consultation stage.See www.clarecoco.ie for full project details.
