Why you should always wear your seat belt on an aircraft
ATSB Investigation Cruising at 37,000 ft, one of three air data inertial reference
units (ADIRUs) started generating incorrect flight data
Two minutes later, in response to this data, the aircraft computers commanded the aircraft to pitch down.
The aircraft pitched nose-down 8.4 degrees and descended 650 ft, followed by a second pitching event 2 minutes later at 3.5 degrees nose-down, descending 400 ft.
At least 110 of the 303 passengers and 9 of the 12 crew members were injured; 12 occupants were seriously injured, another 39 received hospital medical treatment.
Most of the injuries involved passengers who were seated without their seatbelts fastened or were standing.

It was a terrifying experience, followed by an 8-hour wait at a remote airfield.
After the first nose-dive, the captain came on the PA and said it was “difficulty with the aircraft control systems.” It then dived again, which made for a terrifying 40 minutes before landing, wondering if the plane could be landed safely.

What is this?
This was a few rows behind me. A flight attendant’s head and shoulders punched through the ceiling. They carried
him out on a back board in a neck brace.

This is most appropriate for me to present…. as my Mother in law was the second most injured person on that flight as she was out of her seat going to the toilet at the time of the incident.
I recall that she was in the toilet for the first dive and recovering outside the toilet for the second dive. She hit the ceiling both times. As well as a lot of body bruising one of her feet was smashed to pieces. She had steel pins holding it together while it healed. Apart from flying back to Singapore with her foot in plaster she has not flown since.

LNG as transport fuel
• Clean air legislation (and high cost of diesel) is encouraging many trucking companies to convert their transport fleets to LNG as fuel.
• Refuelling networks are growing in USA, UK, Australia, Canada and Continental Europe.
• LNG as a bunker fuel for shipping also growing, particularly in Northern Europe (Baltic).

In USA, LNG seen as “local” fuel, replacing reliance on diesel produced from “imported” oil.
LNG as long-haul trucking fuel (USA data)
• $0.75 to $1.50 cheaper on a diesel gallon equivalent basis.
• Tanks about 1.7 times diesel volume to hold the same amount of energy (adds approximately 400kgs).
• Two 100 gallon tanks have range of about 600-700 kilometers.
• Trucks cost an extra $50,000 to $90,000 each (new).
• Approximate 15% to 20% fuel mileage reduction.
• Additional maintenance cost between 2 and 4 cents per kilometer.
• Running 100,000klms/yr could see a payback in two years.

LNG as aircraft fuel??
Boeing completed study for NASA for airliners entering service in the future. The study sees LNG reducing fuel burn (compared to today’s airliners) by approx. 60%.
In January, 1989 a Russian TU-155 performed first flight on LNG. Flight testing program was fulfilled, several international flight demonstrations were made.
