Dear Streamwood Park District Residents,

e Streamwood Park District completed the renovation of Grow Park, Autumn Chase Park, Ridge Park, and Surrey Woods Park playgrounds in 2018. In 2017, Buchanan, Challenger South, Friendship and Oak Ridge Parks were renovated with new play structures. e Jeerson Park exercise trail renovation will be complete by Summer 2019.

e playground structures installations that occurred in the 1990’s were not staggered or spread out to plan for a manageable lifecycle replacement schedule. Today, the Park District is challenged with 23% of our parks structures are between 25-30 years old, 34% being between 20-24 years old, 17% being between 15-20 years old, and 26% being between 10-15 years old.

e renovated parks have been spread out among various neighborhoods throughout the community, and no single neighborhood had numerous playgrounds being replaced. e play structures have been replaced with modern play components, consisting of multiple play opportunities that meet all current playground and safety standards, including ADA compliance considerations. e Park District also solicited feedback from the neighborhoods impacted by the plans and asked the residents to vote on the options for the equipment themes and related components.

We know playground safety is important. e Park District has three sta members who have been licensed as Certied Playground Safety Inspectors (CPSI), ensuring that the Park District is regularly monitoring the safety of all play structures; especially the older ones.

We are also seeking alternative revenue sources such as grants to continue our park and playground renovations. One example being a grant application to update Commissioners’ Park (formerly Aquarius Park). e awarding agency will be making decisions late Spring 2019.

e goal of our playground replacement plans are to provide the Streamwood residents with as many new play structures as are economically feasible, with the least amount of disruption to your enjoyment of our parks.

If you have any park safety concerns, please contact the Parks Department at [email protected], or can call the Parks Hotline at 630.483.3134.

ank you.Richard T. JaniecPark District Board President

The benefits of youth sports promote healthy lifestyles and safe environments for stronger neighborhoods and more wholesome

communities. A primary goal in youth sports is to encourage active participation by all youth in fun and healthy physical

activities according to their age, interests and abilities.

Research shows that young people who participate in athletics get better grades, devote more hours to studying, think more

about their future, aspire to attend and graduate from college, and have lower suspension and expulsion rates. It is reported

that players reported lower rates of unhealthy behavior such as drinking and smoking, and are less likely to be overweight or

become obese. Other studies back up these reports that there is evidence based research to show that youth who play

sports get better grades, plan to attend college, and are more community minded.

SATURDAY, MAY 1810a - 12p

followed by lunch at Hoosier Grove

Park Pride Day 2019 is on the horizon. Come out to celebrate our 9th annual Park Pride Day.

After a successful 8th annual Park Pride Day, eighteen parks were cleaned up by over 115 volunteers! As we near our 10th annual Park Pride Day, we are aiming to have 25

parks cleaned up. That’s over half of Streamwood’s Parks.

Curious how to get involved? It’s easy! There is definitely a park out there for you. After all, there are 47 to choose from! But hurry… your favorite park could go fast. Once you have decided on a park (or if you want us to choose one for you), contact the Parks Department and we will get everything ready for you!

The Parks Department will provide the tools, flowers, lunch and fun. You just have to come prepared to plant some beautiful flowers, pull some pesky weeds, and pick up some trash

to help prepare our parks for a busy and fun summer!

Directly following all of our hard work, you and all of your friends are invited to join us at the historic Hoosier Grove for a complimentary lunch of burgers and dogs, where you can pick up your free

t-shirt, and enter to win some fun prizes.

We can accommodate any size group. You must reserve your park by Monday, May 6 to ensure your park and supplies are ready for Park Pride Day.

Program Errors

Due to the large amount of information available in the Streamwood Park District program guide, errors and changes before or after publication may occur. We apologize for any errors in this program guide, and will advise you of any changes as quickly as possible. We will also attempt to keep the information online as current as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.

Waivers

The Streamwood Park District is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Streamwood Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for programs/activities must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate. When registering for any program, class, or event, all registered participants must sign the waiver at the bottom of the registration form, or by parents/guardians 18 and older of under-age participants.

Class Cancellations

Every effort is made to avoid canceling classes. However, a minimum number of participants must be registered. Notification of class cancelation may be made with as little as 24-hour notice. In cases where a program is canceled, you will be notified prior to the start of the program and a full refund will be issued.

Class Transfers

All transfer requests will be honored if there are openings in the class requesting to be transferred to and the participant is the appropriate age for the program. If additional payment is due, this must be made at the time of the transfer request.

Refunds

To request a refund on a program, a Refund Request Form must be completed and submitted to Registration. Administrative approval must be received before a refund will be issued. All refunds issued which are not a result of a Park District cancelation will be assessed a service charge. The service charge for programs with fees of $10 or more will be $5; programs with fees less than $10 will be charged 50% of the program fee.1. A full refund will be given when the Park District cancels a trip/program or a refund is requested as a result of being placed on a waiting list.2. A refund minus a service charge will be given when a refund request is received a minimum of four days before the start of the registered program.3. A prorated refund with a service charge may be granted when a refund request is received with less than four days before the start or after the start of the registered program and the reason is approved. Documentation may be requested with your refund request in order to be approved. The prorated refund will be based on the date the request was received, not the last attended class. A refund will not be approved if the session is more than half over. No refunds will be issued for individually missed or forgotten classes.4. No refund requests will be granted that are made more than two (2) business days after a one day program or special event.5. Refunds for trips will not be given unless one of the following occurs:A. Park District cancels the trip.B. A replacement is found to take the trip.6. Deposits for certain programs and trips are identified as non-refundable and therefore the refund policy does not apply.7. The cost of purchased individual supplies or equipment such as t-shirts, uniforms, trophies, costumes, etc. will be deducted from your refund. No reimbursements will be given for required equipment or supply purchases made by the participant or parent.8. Please allow 4-6 weeks for your refund to be processed. Warning of RiskRecreational activities/programs are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental, and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity/program. Understandably, not all hazards and dangers can be foreseen. Depending on the particular activity, participants must understand that certain risks, dangers, and injuries due to inclement weather, slipping, falling, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects, in-adequate or defective equipment, inadequate supervision, instruction or officiating, and all other circumstances inherent to indoor and outdoor recreational activities/programs exist. In this regard, it must be recognized that it is impossible for the Streamwood Park District to guarantee absolute safety.

Behavior PolicyAppropriate behavior is expected from all participants and observers in programs and in facilities to protect the enjoyment and safety of all patrons. Behaviors that will not be accepted include, but are not limited to, the following:• Disrupting a program or creating a disturbance at a facility.• Continuous refusal to follow program and/or facility rules and guidelines.•Use of verbal harassment, profanity, vulgarity, obscenity, or racial slurs.•Blatant disrespect of staff and program or facility rules and guidelines.•Damage, vandalism, or theft of private or Park District facilities, equipment or supplies.• Possession or use of illegal substances or medication, including the use of alcohol or smoking where prohibited.• Inappropriate or offensive dress, including, but not limited to dress which is too revealing and clothing which displays obscene or offensive words or pictures.• Possession or threat of a weapon.•Gang activity including display or possession of symbols, hand signals, soliciting membership, intimidating or threatening any individual, wear-ing or displaying colors or items of dress, etc.• Inappropriate display of affection, including but not limited to prolonged kissing and touch-ing of any private area of the body. The following outlines steps that may be used with patrons who are not behaving appropri-ately. Membership or program fees will not be re-funded for any person removed from a program or facility due to violation of this behavior policy. Some programs or facilities may have stricter or more detailed behavior policies.

Program ParticipantsAll program participants are expected to be-have appropriately and follow the rules of the program and facility. A participant will receive written notice for inappropriate behavior, and in the case of a minor, a copy of the notice will be provided to such minor’s parent/guardian. If a participant receives three notice of inappro-priate behavior, or if the participant is involved in one severe incident, as determined by District staff, the participant may no longer participate in the program until a meeting is scheduled and held. The participant, a parent/guardian if the participant is a minor, the program instructor, the program supervisor and any other persons whom

the District considers necessary for a resolution of the inappropriate behavior, shall be present at such meeting. At the meeting, the question of continued participation in the program will be considered and, primarily for minor partici-pants, a Behavior Contract may be prepared as a condition of continued participation. Such a Behavior Contract will be personalized to the circumstances and the participant, and will in-clude specific expectations and consequences for failure to meet such expectations, including possible suspension and/or termination from program participation. Inappropriate behav-ior by adults may result in more rapid progress toward suspension or termination from program participation.

FacilitiesAll facility participants are expected to follow the rules of the facilities. Specialty areas of the facilities (example: fitness center and pools) have posted signs stating special rules specific to that area. Disregard or abuse of facility rules may result in removal by staff or police from the facility for a designated length of time or permanently.

ObserversObservers of programs are also expected to behave appropriately. Parents, friends, and any observers are held to the same standards of be-havior as participants. If inappropriate behavior of a program observer is reported to or observed by a staff person, the observer will be asked to leave by the staff or police, if necessary.

AppealsAny participant who is suspended or terminat-ed from program participation shall have the right to appeal to the Executive Director within fourteen days of any notice of suspension or ter-mination. The Executive Director shall thereupon schedule a meeting concerning such appeal, and the appellant shall be entitled to present his or her version of the facts at such meeting. With-in five days after such meetings, the Executive Director shall notify the appellant in writing that the suspension or termination has been affirmed, modified, or reversed. The Executive Director shall notify the Board of Park Commissioners of the meeting and the decision. It is a vision of the Streamwood Park District to provide safe and wholesome programs in well-maintained facilities for our residents and guests. Rules must be followed and policies such as this must be established to protect this vision for all involved. Our goal is not to remove patrons from programs or facilities, but to work together with partici-pants and/or parents/guardians to the best of our ability to correct or deal with a problem. The Streamwood Park District asks for your coopera-tion in behaving appropriately and also teach-ing your children the importance of appropriate behavior and following rules.
