2006 Annual Report

Page 2: SPCF Annual Report 2006

The theme for our 2006 Annual Report is “Connecting, Responding and Convening.”

The Spartanburg County Foundation strives to connect our donors through their own

specific funds to needs in our community, to respond with grants that affect our quality of

life, and to convene a host of individuals and organizations that are passionate about their

philanthropic concerns. In the pages that follow, we will illustrate this theme by sharing

several stories with you about how our donors have connected to the community and

how the Foundation has responded to community need and has provided a leadership

role as a convener. We hope that these stories effectively tell the story of how the

Foundation is working, not only to improve the community today, but also is planting

seeds to promote a sustainable community for tomorrow.

It is really quite remarkable that we have such a significant asset as The Spartanburg

County Foundation in our community. We are accessible to anyone and everyone who

wants to be a philanthropist. There are countless examples of generous communities

across the country and, where this exists, you will usually find a growing, vibrant

community. Spartanburg is no exception! We work hard to achieve a level of excellence

in all that we do. This is a commitment, not only to our Foundation donors, but also to

our broader community. We look forward to the future with hope, courage and promise

because you have made this community a priority in your life.0 by being an advocate,

by giving your financial resources, time and energy and by leading with your heart. In

turn, we continue to remain committed to you, growing the community’s resources and

connecting generous people with causes that impact our community. We want you to

know that The Spartanburg County Foundation is poised to be your partner in your

quest to address the quality of life issues that you embrace.

We are convinced that through effective grant making, community leadership and

management of our many donor directed funds, we will promote sustainability for this

Foundation and this Community that will be relevant for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Sally D. Foster John H. Dargan

For Dorothy Chapman Josey and Dr. Julian Josey, Spartanburg is home. Spartanburg is where Julian serves the community as a radiation oncologist

and director of the Gibbs Cancer Center at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. Spartanburg is where Dorothy paints, taxis children back and forth to school, and volunteers. Spartanburg holds friends, family and responsibility. Taking that responsibility seriously, Dorothy and Julian established a fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation in 1997 that has already doubled in principal. Specifically, the Joseys “don’t want to abandon the organizations that they hold dear” after they retire and no longer have the same income. “We’ve been blessed,” says Julian. “The Spartanburg County Foundation is a marvelous vehicle for us to take those blessings and do some nice things for our community.”

Give now and continue giving forever. That’s the philosophy behind The Mary D. & William B. Ferguson Memorial Family Fund. Bill, the owner of Service Office Equipment in Spartan-

burg for 27 years and a Civitan since 1959, and his first wife, Mary, a volunteer for the Spartanburg Humane Society, always put the com-munity first — in their professional lives and in their personal ones. Connected to the community, both Bill and Mary saw that non-profit organizations “didn’t have much trouble raising money for capital improvements, but did for annual giving.” In creating their fund, they kept that in mind designating the interest from the endowment toward annual operating support for the organizations they felt most passionate about, like the Spartanburg Humane Soci-ety, the Church of the Advent, the American Red Cross, and senior programs and youth programs in the community.

A few years after Mary’s death, Bill remarried. Sandie Ferguson shares Bill’s commitment to the community. Together they work through The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Donor Connect program to stay aware and connected to the needs in the Spartanburg community.

Betty Ann Moore was dying of colon cancer when she decided to set up a charitable fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation. Her son, John, helped her during the gift planning phase but didn’t realize at the time just what a gift she was leaving for him

and his sister, Anne Brady. “She wanted us to have the opportunity to interact and be more involved in the community,” says John. “It’s also kept us even closer and offers some significant tax benefits.”

The Betty Ann Moore Charitable Donor Advised Fund places John and Anne Brady in an uncommon position. Through the fund, they now have the resources to make a charitable difference in their community often reserved for people twice their age. While their mom named a few organizations that she particularly wanted to continue to support, she left the ultimate decisions for designating funds up to John and Anne Brady. “John Dargan [president of The Spartanburg County Foundation] led us through the process of getting the fund started, and he still meets with us each year to discuss funding priorities,” says John. “Our dad and mom really stressed giving back to the community, and Anne Brady and I are committed to following their example.”

Page 11: SPCF Annual Report 2006

Andy and Lynne Falatok decided to begin a charitable fund with definite goals in mind — to benefit their community and their two sons. “We want our sons to know what’s important in life, and we want them to work together in

future years to complete the work in the community that we started,” says Andy, president of Tex-Mach, Inc., a used textile machinery, appraisals and liquida-tions firm in Spartanburg.

They chose The Spartanburg County Foundation with similar thought and determination. According to Andy and Lynne:

1. The Foundation has a long history of successful philanthropy in the Spartanburg Community.

2. The Foundation has had an excellent return of approximately 12% per year for over 10 years.

3. The compounding investment return will allow us to make charitable donations for a much longer period than we could have imagined.

The Falatoks also are working with their son, Christopher, an agent with Northwest Mutual, to purchase a life insurance policy that will eventually benefit their fund.

The Woodruff Community Center fosters a spirit of community that encourages residents of Southern Spartanburg County to live healthy and empowered lives. Since it was founded in 2001, the center has been a part of Spartanburg County School District 4. When the center’s

advisory board decided to pursue getting non-profit status, they sought the help of The Spartanburg County Foundation. In 2006, the foundation awarded the Woodruff Community Center a $15,000 grant after the center raised $9,000 in matching funds from local individuals and businesses. In addition to funding the professional services needed to gain 501(c)(3) status, the foundation’s grant also went to support the center’s after-school and summer enrichment program for area children. More than 100 children in the Woodruff area have benefitted from the program by receiving homework help, academic enrichment, safe recreation, character education, fine arts programming, field trips and nutritious snacks. The results of this initiative include higher grades on report cards, better school attendance, higher standardized test scores and improved self esteem.

Months after returning from a trip to Texas to visit Christ-mas in April founder Bobby Trimble, Sandi Turner, direc-tor of Spartanburg’s Christmas in Action, and three of

the organization’s board members are still awed and inspired by the experience. In addition to learning directly from the source, they also took another benchmarking trip to learn from a suc-cessful Christmas in Action community organization in Michigan. The trips, as well as a board retreat, marketing survey and strategic plan, 6 x 12 foot enclosed tool trailer stocked with tools, and an information management software program for the organization were all funded with a $20,000 Clemson Compassionate Project Grant through The Spartanburg County Foundation. Turner and the board are especially pleased with the marketing survey, which pinpoints areas in Spartanburg County where the need is greatest. Since the organization mobilizes volunteers for one-day workdays in April and October to make home repairs for elderly, disabled and disadvantaged homeowners in the Spartanburg area, they need to know the areas where their work will make the most impact.

When ReGenesis Community Health Center and Reach Out and Read teamed up to make books a part of a healthy child-hood for children living in neighborhoods on the south side of Spartanburg, they looked to The Spartanburg County Foundation for local support. Beginning with their 6-months well check-up, babies who receive health care at the ReGenesis

Community Health Center are given a new, age-appropriate book while visiting the doctor and nurse. Those books are funded through a grant from The Spartanburg County Foundation. In addition, the doctors and nurses encourage parents to read to their children at home. It’s all in an effort to get children ready for school, both physically and academically, and encourage a life-long love of reading.

Ola Mae Styles had never watched a movie on the big screen until the Se-nior Life & Wellness Club in her apartment building used funding from The Spartanburg County Foundation to purchase and install a large screen and

state-of-the-art audiovisual system for the center’s dining area.

“My parents were strict about movies, so I never saw one growing up. Then I thought, you can’t miss anything you never had,” says Styles, who now enjoys watching movies with her six-year-old granddaughter. “It gives us something to talk about together. I look forward to the movies now, and have no intention of missing another one.”

The staff at the Senior Life & Wellness Club also use the new equipment to play ex-ercise DVDs and educational videos for the members. “This new equipment helps us meet the mission of the Senior Centers,” says Executive Director Nancy Ogle. “Our goal is to keep seniors as independent as possible and connected to the community. We want them to stay as healthy, wealthy and wise for as long as they can.”

Page 21: SPCF Annual Report 2006

Huaiying Kang learned about The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Grassroots Leadership Development Institute (GLDI) from a friend who had just completed the program. Living in Spartanburg after growing up in Shanghai, China, Kang soon

realized that she could bring knowledge of her native country to her adopted home, but she needed help to get started. Kang enrolled in the GLDI in May 2006 and spent the next six months attending monthly Saturday workshops where she absorbed training in com-munity building, community organizing, race and power, resource development, strategic thinking and public speaking. By the time she graduated in November, she had already developed a feasible plan for the creation of a Chinese Culture and Education Center in Spartanburg. “The Grassroots Leadership Development Institute was a good resource for me because it gave me the energy and encouragement to become more open-minded and realistic about starting a non-profit organization,” says Kang.

The Chinese Culture and Education Center now enjoys formal partnerships with Spar-tanburg Day School and the area colleges and universities where they serve as a resource organization to enrich the schools’ international or Chinese language programs.

Dr. Art Grant, director of counseling services at Daniel Morgan Technol-ogy Center, remembers going to the movies with his uncles. He always enjoyed the films, but it was the walk to and from the theatre where

they would talk that made a lasting impact on his life. When he and his wife, Dr. Audrey Grant, assistant superintendent for student services for Spartanburg County School District Seven, decided to become mentors to three Citizen Scholars, those memories came rushing back. “We love to take the children to the movies,” he says, “but more than that we like to talk about travel and nature and science with them.” Audrey adds that many of their conversations also circle around grades, schools, scholarships and going to college. “We’re all looking forward to high school graduation six years from now,” she says.

Through the Citizen Scholars Program, students with academic potential who would not normally be able to attend college are paired with a supportive adult mentor. The program also offers enrichment activities and college preparatory classes outside of the regular classroom and is open to students between the ages of 11 and 18 in all seven Spartanburg County school districts. Students who complete the Citizen Scholars Program and graduate from high school earn a college scholarship.

As Alston Drummond begins classes in the fall at Auburn University, he’ll take with him some of the lessons he learned while participat-ing in Spartanburg Youth Voices, the youth arm of the Spartanburg

Youth Council. A grant from The Spartanburg County Foundation brought consultants and curriculum from The Search Institute to Spartanburg to train individuals and organizations in the community who work with youth. The Spartanburg Youth Council was one of those organizations to benefit from The Search Institute, an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide leadership, knowledge, and resources to promote healthy children, youth, and communities.

Alston calls Spartanburg Youth Voices an effort to “help youth become better adults.” With the resources provided by The Search Institute, Spar-tanburg youth leaders have developed a program to help community youth build the foundation they need to nurture their positive develop-ment. As a result of this collaboration, Alston has met youth from across the county, learned about children’s rights and responsibilities, and at-tended a three-day leadership camp in Knoxville, TN.

Ricky Richardson

Page 27: SPCF Annual Report 2006

Ricky Richardson, a vice president with Smith Barney/Citigroup Global Markets in Spartanburg, has always been conscious of the environment. “Being a native ‘Spartanburger,’ I’ve seen

tremendous changes in the landscape of our county — both good and bad,” says Richardson. “So the natural resources component of Community Indicators holds great interest to me.” Richardson also agreed to co-chair the Management of Natural Resources Taskforce for the Strategic Spartanburg: Community Indicators Improvement Plan (2006-2010) because he wanted to learn more from the experts in the field who were also serving on the taskforce.

The Management of Natural Resources Taskforce was one of 10 groups convened to analyze and prioritize the data from Community Indicators VI examining key human service and social issues affecting Spartanburg County. The resulting Community Improvement Plan, a collaborative effort of The Spartanburg County Foundation, the United Way of the Piedmont, Spartanburg County government, and individual Spartanburg community leaders, is a working document designed to help guide non-profit organizations, businesses, government and local funders in meeting the most pressing needs in Spartanburg County.

Planned Giving Legacy Society

Many of our patrons have chosen to establish a Planned Giving relationship with The Spartanburg County Foundation over the years, which would be funded from their estates, making a difference in the good causes that they support and believe in for many years into the future.

These patrons have experienced the joy of giving and the satisfaction of making a difference. We realize that there are many choices today as to where you can place your charitable gifts and The Spartanburg County Foundation appreciates the many patrons who have chosen us to be the steward for their future philanthropic funds.

Planned giving encompasses a variety of ways that gifts can be made to The Spartanburg County Foundation from accumulated resources. It usually involves financial or estate planning and is not necessarily reserved for only the wealthy. Planned giving is a means by which anyone concerned with the wide use of his or her personal resources makes a considered choice about their ultimate disposition. In general, planned gifts are made through deferred gifts or outright gifts.

Deferred Gifts

• A Bequest in a Will. . . a percentage of an estate, a specific asset (IRA’s or 401-K), a trust or the naming of The Spartanburg County Foundation as a contingent beneficiary.

• A Life Income Gift. . . such as a Charitable Gift Annuity, a Charitable Remainder Trust, or a Charitable Lead Trust.

• Life Insurance. . . make The Spartanburg County Foundation the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

• A Life Estate. . . such as a gift of a home, vacation home or other related property.

Outright Gifts

• Appreciated Property. . . such as real estate, securities or personal property.

Planned giving establishes a way for a donor to make a larger gift than they thought possible, as in most cases, it reduces estate taxes. Our donors have either opened new funds or designated existing funds at the Foundation to receive a residual of their estates, which will address their specific interests and concerns in Spartanburg County. Planned giving through The Spartanburg County Foundation ensures that you can honor the past, sustain the present, and nurture the future.

Tips for Applying for GrantsTax exempt, nonprofit organizations in Spartanburg County

may apply for grants from The Spartanburg County Foundation to fund projects that provide innovative responses to recognized

community needs that do not duplicate other efforts.

We encourage proposals that:• Enhance the internal stability and growth of a receiving organization. • Have a plan for continued funding from other

sources. • Are likely to attract support from matching fund arrangements.

The Foundation believes that community-building is essential to our work; therefore, preference will be given to projects that:

• Affect broad segments of the community. • Demonstrate good planning in light of overall community needs.

• Are collaborative in nature. • Promote volunteer participation.

Please visit our website (www.spcf.org) and click on grant guidelines for complete instructions and information on the letter

of inquiry process, or call The Spartanburg County Foundation office at (864) 582-0138 for more information.
