2met!® is a multi-mission concept for real-time data acquisition, processing, visualisation and distribution of Earth
observation satellite data. It is a commercial off-the-shelf solution, based on standard hardware and software. The 2met!®
Concept is fully supporting the GEONETCast family of DVB based satellite receiving systems for the meteorological user
community. EUMETCast, CMACast, FengYunCast and HimawariCast are DVB based services using commercial
telecommunication satellites like EUTELSAT™ 10A and JCSAT-2B. The SCISYS solution is completely based on
Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products that can be easily procured in many places world-wide. The low procurement
costs together with a highly reliable system architecture and concept is the key factor for the success of the 2met!®

Understanding HimawariCast
JMA (Japanese Meteorological Agency) has operated the
GMS (Geostationary Meteorological Satellite) and MTSAT
(Multifunction Transport Satellite) series of satellites around
the 140º east longitude to cover the East Asia and Western
Pacific regions since 1977. As follow-on to the MTSAT
series, the Agency will operate next-generation satellites
called Himawari-8 and Himawari-9 (Himawari means
"sunflower" in Japanese). Unlike the current MTSAT series,
Himawari provides dedicated meteorological missions. The
following picture shows a typical HimawariCast system
architecture consisting of hardware and software
components and well supported by the 2met!® system
concept.

System Architecture Overview
SCISYS offers a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf system (COTS)
based on a sound experience of various mission specific
implementations. The overall system is sub-divided into the
▪ HimawariCast DVB Front-end system (Windows or
Linux based)
▪ Data Processing and Display Workstation (Windows or
Linux based) fully supporting the SATAID (Satellite
Animation and Interactive Diagnosis) software as
provided by JMA
▪ Optional additional Workstation (Windows or Linux
based) for Historical Data Processing (archived data)
and/or data visualisation.
The Figure presents a typical HimawariCast system
architecture based on the 2met!® Concept consisting of
hardware and software components.

For operating the HimawariCast DVB S2 system the

2met!® is a multi-mission concept for real-time data

2met!® supports a variety of remote sensing satellites like
METEOSAT, MSG, GMS, GOES, MTSAT, NOAA, Feng-
Yun, METOP, TERRA, AQUA, NPP as well as future JPSS
missions. User-specific solutions are offered for reception
and processing of meteorological data disseminated via
HimawariCast.
