Bialik Shelanu Pesach 2017 1

This year’s musical production, Hairspray, was held at the Renaissance Theatre, Kew in order to accommodate a larger audience and was still a sell-out!

It was an incredible learning journey for our students, giving them the opportunity to develop significant insight into an historical period where bigotry prevailed and to learn how ideologies and behaviours can change when people unite and take a stand.

Bialik’s inclusivity meant that all students who auditioned, or volunteered for the crew, regardless of experience and ability, were guaranteed a part in the show. We were also thrilled to include some Bialik alumni.

Their commitment was huge – with students successfully juggling sporting commitments and other outside-school

activities to meet the demands of the show. The wonderful camaraderie displayed between the cast and crew throughout the production process will certainly add to their life-long memories.

Kol ha’kavod to the entire cast and crew for an outstanding performance.

Button ProjectIn February, the Bialik Button Project achieved its 10-year long goal of collecting 1.5 million buttons to commemorate the Jewish children murdered in the Holocaust.

Over 250 guests attended the official opening of the Button Installation, including Bialik grandparent Holocaust survivors, alumni, senior students, Jewish communal leaders and federal and state MPs Josh Frydenberg, John Pesutto, Michael Danby and David Southwick.

A moving tribute trailer was screened as a precursor to the Button Documentary Film being produced to tell the story of the Button Project, with a haunting melody performed by Alumna Tiah Gordon, who recorded the song “Ponar” at the Belzec concentration camp in 2016.

The beautiful installation is now permanently on display in the Art and Technology Building.

Atom Award for Animated FilmIn late 2016, then Year 8 student Jemma Zuker’s animated short film was named as one of two finalists nationally in the Best Middle School Animation category in the Atom Awards.

Jemma’s black and white clip ‘Bird’ is about a young girl who feels like she doesn’t

have a place in the world around her.

The Atom Awards celebrate the best of Australian and New Zealand screen content from the education sector and is the second-longest-running film and media awards in Australia.

Well done Jemma!

ACMI ‘Screen It’ AwardIn November 2016, then Year 10 student Bailey Marr won the 2016 ACMI ‘Screen It’ competition in the Senior Videogame category for his game ‘The Adventure of The Lost Treasure’. ‘Screen It’ is Australia’s national film, animation and game-making competition for school-age students.

The award, a testament to Bailey’s creativity and diligence, was presented to him at the ‘Screen It’ red carpet award ceremony. Mazel tov Bailey!

Shalom Kehlilla

Pesach is a perfect time to ‘remember the stranger’. The book of Shmot (Exodus) reminds us that ‘you once were strangers’ and during the Pesach seder (service and meal) we fill a cup for Elijah, and encourage strangers to join us, eat with us and celebrate freedom with us.

At Bialik we have taken this theme of menschlichkeit to heart, and you will see examples of this in these pages. From outreaching within and beyond our community through the Buttons Project to fundraising, giving gifts and friend-raising, the Bialik experience is one that combines personal and communal decency and activism with hard work and high achievement.

Although our Class of 2016 achieved the highest results in the State, coming first in menschlichkeit, mentoring, charity and communal activism is equally important. We also know that the students who achieve their very best are those with balance and a variety of interests in their lives.

Our Parents’ Association have been busy launching our 75th anniversary year with the Bialik Fete, and we look forward, as the oldest Jewish school in Melbourne, to opening our doors to the community in our Anniversary Week in the last week of June when our archives – and indeed the whole school - are on display.

I look forward to welcoming you to our exhibition.

Chag Sameach,

Jeremy Stowe-Lindner Principal

Educational Excellence

Bialik College’s remarkable VCE results earned the school first place in Victoria in 2016 with 67% of students scoring 90 or above and close to 14% scoring 99 or above.

Whilst Bialik’s record of achieving in the top 5 in the State for 19 of the last 20 years is unrivalled, we are also incredibly proud of the Class of 2016 for having the College’s largest Mazkirut (leadership group), raising in excess of $20k for external charities and assisting the College in gaining more sports medals in 2016 than in previous years in our sporting history.

We commend our students for attaining their personal best, not only with their VCE results, but by participating and contributing to school life and the wider community throughout their final year at school.

Principal Jeremy Stowe-Lindner commented that whilst “menschlickeit, communal activism and leadership” displayed by the students was of foremost importance, “being number one in the state for VCE is the icing on the cake”.

The Prep JourneyWhat have our new Preppies been experiencing in their first term of schooling?

Nourishing their Jewish soul

All our Preppies have been learning their Hebrew letters, exploring the festivals of Purim & Tu B’Shvat (New Year for Trees) and experiencing interactive Pesach seders.

Nourishing their literacy

Preppies love their own reading journals, library lessons and story worlds under the expert guidance of our Literacy Coach Corinne.

Nourishing their whole being

From specialist music to specialist sport and e-learning teachers, Preppies are excited to embrace the next stage of their learning journeys.

Nourishing their numeracy

Numbers take on special significance in Bialik’s new Numeracy program for Preppies, with Numeracy Coach Rebecca.

Tikkun Olam is central to the College’s vision of Communal Responsibility. Raising funds for important causes, as well as donating time and resources, are just some of the ways in which we assist in ‘repairing the world’. So far, our students have raised close to $18,000 for external charities in 2017.

PesachThe festival of Pesach has always been a fun and exciting chag for our students as we recount the incredible story of the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt through an interactive, informal education setting during our model seders.

Bialik College is proud to offer age appropriate model sedarim to all our students.

Primary students attended traditional model seders whilst the Middle school model sedarim linked the traditional with the contemporary world. Our Senior school students experienced seders with links to their personal lives and development.

Saving Hearts with LoveValentine’s Day was celebrated at Bialik in the best possible way ... by helping others! Bialik’s Mazkirut (Year 12 student leaders) sold chocolates and flowers and students came to school dressed in red and donated a gold coin.

Many returned in the evening in their pyjamas to attend an open-air cinema. They raised close to $2000 and all proceeds went to ‘Save a Child’s Heart’, an organisation in Israel that provides lifesaving surgery to children, no matter their race, gender or religion.

Shave for a cureIn an effort to raise more than previous years in the annual ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ for the Leukaemia foundation, the Mazkirut introduced exciting new elements to the event.

The ELC joined in by contributing a gold coin donation with the celebration of a ‘crazy hair day’.

In addition, female students had the opportunity to donate a minimum of 15cm of hair to ‘Zichron Menachem’ – an organisation in Israel that creates wigs for people that have lost their hair due to cancer treatment and other conditions.

The school raised over $14,000 for this very worthwhile cause.

Purim with a DifferenceThis year, our Years 2-12 students had an exciting time on King Achashverosh’s party boat on the Yarra whilst the ELC enjoyed a wonderful Purim Shpiel. Purim is a time of giving and our Senior students did us proud.

Our Year 12s visited Dandenong Primary school and gave mishloach manot gifts and our Year 11s spent time playing, interacting and bonding with their Kinder buddies.

It was beautiful to see the teenagers giving selflessly of their time, showing patience, warmth and connecting with younger students, displaying true Bialik spirit and family values.

Selling Coffee for Youth ProjectsYear 8 ETGAR students are making and selling fresh coffee and hot chocolate from the Gary Peer Coffee Van, in order to raise money for the charity ‘Youth Projects’.

You can get your hot drink at the Tooronga Road entrance on Wednesday mornings from 7:40 am. Last year the students raised $1,600 for Youth Projects.

Special thanks to Gary Peer and the Alumni who have given their time to assist the students and help this great initiative.

Championship Winners! The Bialik Wolves Senior Teams had an outstanding Summer Season making College sporting history with four of our teams winning each of their respective EISM Championships Grand Finals.

This outstanding achievement was especially rewarding because of the large numbers of Year 12 students electing to participate in sport in 2017 and bolstering teams.

EISM Secondary SwimmingCongratulations to our Secondary Swimming Team on a fabulous effort at the EISM Swimming Carnival.

There were many personal bests culminating in Bialik being placed 6th overall with the narrowest of margins for the 3rd–6th placings.

This year marks Bialik’s 75th anniversary, from its humble beginnings as a kindergarten in Drummond Street, Carlton, to our current incarnation as a home to more than 1,000 students and their extended families.

The Bialik Hebrew School and Kindergarten was operational from as early as the late 1930s as an afternoon and Sunday school, offering instruction in Hebrew. In 1942, a kindergarten, operating out of a single story house in the centre of the vibrant Carlton Jewish community, was opened.

In 1958, the decision was made to transform Bialik into a day school that offered an alternative philosophy to other Jewish schools of the day: one that centred on Zionism. Hebrew was pivotal to the new philosophy

and it was expressed through songs, literature and celebration of Jewish festivals and culture.

With strong support from the community for Bialik to expand, the Shakespeare Grove campus opened in 1963 and the school became known as Bialik College. Less than a decade later, Bialik had to move to a bigger campus - first to Wantirna, which was short-lived, and then to our current campus on Auburn Road in 1981.

In this, our 75th year, we have much to celebrate. The vision and passion of our founders continues to guide Bialik College today and Bialik continues to adapt to change whilst at the same time teaching the children of our community the importance of our history, our Jewish traditions and a love of Israel.

SAVE THE DATEThe community is invited to visit Bialik during the 75th Anniversary Celebration Week: Monday 26 June – Friday 30 June.

Bookings are essential:www.trybooking.com/PIZJ

There will be numerous exhibitions and displays of student work, including an archive exhibition of the history of our school.

BCPA Family Camp 2017The annual BCPA Family Camp was a huge hit giving 30 families the opportunity to shmooze, sing, swim, play and celebrate Shabbat together.

The incredible 75th Anniversary Fete was held on Sunday 26 March 2017. It was a great day out for the whole family offering a variety of rides, activities, a market as well as food for all ages and tastes.

The success of the fete was largely due to Mish Kohn, Stacey Dodge and their team of dedicated volunteers as well as the many parent volunteers who worked tirelessly on the day. The Bialik community spirit shone throughout the school.

A major highlight was the Dunk Tank where kids had the opportunity to have members of staff drop into a tank full of water.

Families also enjoyed the live performances of so many talented Alumni, current students and a ‘Dads band’.

Thank you to all our sponsors who generously donated in some form to the Fete. Your contributions were fundamental in enabling the school to successfully fundraise.

The funds raised from the Fete will go towards new playground equipment.

Sir Zelman Cowen Public Speaking Competition 2016In 2016 the Sir Zelman Cowen Public Speaking Competition celebrated its fourth year and was attended by Lady Anna Cowen.

The competition offers all Year 8 and 9 students the opportunity to hone their oracy skills, while paying tribute to the memory of one of Australia’s leading Jewish figures, former Governor General Sir Zelman Cowen.

Students addressed a topic of their choice associated either with the theme of commitment (Year 8) or Jewish life (Year 9). Overall winner Barr Donde (Year 9) presented a ‘Letter of Gratitude’, addressed to individuals past and present who have held high the banner of Judaism. Year 8 winner Nitsan Shavit spoke on society’s concept of perfection and its illusions, while Year 9 winner Ally Spiegel explored the contradictions and the spaces within ‘I am but I’m not’.

Energy flows during Science WeekFor the third year in a row, Bialik’s Science Week enthralled students with an unusual array of exciting experiments and whacky scientific journeys of discovery.

The theme of Energy permeated the school week, with students from ELC to VCE taking part in special activities such as creating smoothies with their own “legtricity” (electricity generated by pedalling bikes), exploring biofuel innovations for renewable energy, making rockets, growing mushrooms from coffee grinds and exploring the latest TESLA car that was parked at Bialik for a day!

Makerspace Makes an Impact Young scientists, engineers and techies are thriving at Bialik with the popular Makerspace lunchtime club in the Library, which caters to all ages and interests. The projects they engage in utilise a combination of high-tech gadgetry and practical ingenuity, with a bit of competitive fun thrown in! Some recent examples include a competition to construct the tallest structure using Blu-tack and straws; designing and building

workable arcade gaming machines from scratch (using cardboard or wood and computer memory boards); creating content for viewing on virtual reality headsets and creating prototypes for the 3D printer. In addition to “Techie Tuesday” and “3-D Thursday” there is also “Low-Tech Wednesday” when students are encouraged to rely on craft & fine motor skills rather than technology to produce objects.
