What's New at CMOM!

CMOM is now the proud owner of a giant Milk Bottle! Yes, you heard right. The enormous structure was on top of a former milk dairy in the South Memphis Soulsville neighborhood. The S o u t h Memphis Alliance is working to clean up the neighborhood, so they donated the Milk Bottle to CMOM. Plans are underway not just for restoration, but for new uses during educational programming.
Our new Musical Seesaw has arrived! This is a great addition to the CMOM exhibits for all children, but especially for those with Sensory Processing Disorders. This Seesaw is known to be soothing to children with Autism.

Have you seen the new fire truck parked outside of CMOM? We are so excited to have this new addition that we are creating a new fire house! That's right,
construction has begun! Soon we will have a new fire house that will contain both of our old and new fire trucks. It will be furnished with state-of-the-art equipment to help teach children about fire safety! The facade will be based on a recently restored historic firehouse here in Memphis. Look for this exhibit to open this winter!

A Celebration of ThanksTuesday, November 21
11am-2pmIt’s never too early to teach children the importance of giving back. We would like to give children a reason to be a blessing to another child this Thanksgiving season. We are asking parents to encourage their children to donate gently used or new toys to other children who are less fortunate. These toys will be distributed to children of the Mid-South whose families are unable to provide presents this holiday season. Donations will be accepted here at The Children’s Museum of Memphis, 2525 Central Avenue, from November 19 - 21.
On November 21 from 11am - 2pm, join us for special entertainment from Ballet on Wheels, holiday crafts and family games for everyone to enjoy as we present a “Celebration of Thanks.”
Science in the Kitchen Winter Camp December 17-21
December 31-January 49am-3pm
$150 per weekAges 3 to 5 years and 6 to 9 years
We’re cooking up science in the kitchen as we experiment using all five senses while preparing delicious dishes that require little to no cooking. Children will learn what happens when sugar is dissolved, what happens
when an egg is cooked, and what makes a cake rise in the oven. They will practice making predictions, record observations and make comparisons. All the excitement takes place in this fun filled winter camp.
Advance registrations required. Register early, spaces fill fast. Sibling discount available. Call 901-458-2678 , ext. 221 to reserve your child's spot today!
Dear Dr. King - Kids Dream ProjectCall for Letters, Pictures or DVDs
Dr. Martin Luther King Day reminds us of the great legacy of peaceful activism that Dr. King exhibited for mankind. It is a time to reflect on the freedoms and equality that should exists for all people. Dr. King took a stand against injustice for the good of all. Children were no exception. Although the world has drastically changed in many ways, we know that there are many struggles and issues that face our young children today that we want to know about. The Dear Dr. King – Kid’s Dream Project is a forum that gives children an opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings of world peace and equality today. It also encourages them to look back at the pages of history but to commit to keep moving forward as to never to repeat the past. Children of all ages are asked to submit hand-written or typed letters, pictures, or DVDs to express their thoughts and ideas of peace and equality in their communities, in their schools, or in the world where they live. At least 100 entries will be displayed in the Dear Dr. King – Kid’s Dream exhibition at The Children’s Museum during the Ignite the Dream Celebration on Monday, January 21, 2013, from 10 am to 2 pm. Each participant will receive an official Keeper of the Dream certificate in the mail so please print your name, address and phone number legibly on all entries. All entries must be received by the close of business on January 11, 2013.

The children have spoken. The votes have been tallied, and we have a winner! President Barack Obama has been re-elected in the 2012 Children's Choice pick for President of the United States. With 1,055 total ballots counted, 900 ballots were cast for Obama with 130 cast for Romney. Other ballots were written in for God, dads, teachers and classmates.
During the month of September, children were invited to cast their vote for President in an interactive, educational program about voting and the presidential election. They registered to receive their own voting card, created campaign buttons and posters for their favorite candidate, cast their vote in a real voting booth, and took part in interactive games, crafts and activities to introduce the presidential election process and our judicial system.
We would like to thank the following schools for participating and casting their votes for President:• StarAcademy• AlcyJr.Academy• CampusSchool• GrahamwoodElementary• St.Michaels,WestMemphis• RossElementary• ShelbyOaksElementary• BrownsvilleRoadElementary• HamiltonElementary• CordovaElementary• AndtheSeptember15GeneralPublic

Special Events at CMOM!
In September, everyone had a ball at the 2nd Annual Children's Ball! Carriage rides started the evening, then guests were treated to a performance by Collierville Ballet as well as delectable treats from Huey's and McDonalds. Cinderella and Prince Charming stopped by to dance, but the Peabody Ducks stole the show!
In October, golfers teed up to support their favorite cause, CMOM! Around 80 golfers
braved the cold, damp weather to help raise funds for our educational programs and exhibits. Thank
you to our Title Sponsor IP and to everyone that participated!
Also in October, The Kids Only Flea Market taught kids about math and the value of a dollar as they sold their items and shopped for bargains. The Friendzies played their hits as kids bounced in giant inflatables and shot baskets with the Grizzlies. It was a Fall Festival everyone loved!

Welcome to the New Faces of CMOM!
Recently, the CMOM staff has had several new additions. The programming department gained two new members,
Chara Mitchell and Katrina Skefos, as program specialists. Chara previously served as an intern in the education department in 2010. They are both tasked with creating and implementing educational programs for the museum’s young visitors, as well as implementing the department’s outreach programs.
The museum gallery also added a new staff member, Alex Smythe. As Visitor Service Coordinator, Alex interacts with visitors and takes steps to enhance visitor satisfaction by ensuring that guests have a memorable experience. Alex also served as a juggler at the 2nd Annual Children’s Ball.
Sharon Rogness also joined the staff as Member Services Coordinator. In this position, she assists guests with membership needs and policies, and also serves as a hostess for birthday parties at the museum.
The new staff members have been welcomed by veteran staff members and museum guests alike. Fun fact: all of the new staff members have either graduated from or are attending classes at the University of Memphis.
