El Preterito When we want to talk about the past in spanish, we have to conjugate the verbs to match the tense.
•Lets say we want to say I played yesterday.
•Ayer, yo juguè en el parque. Do you see? Instead of putting juego we put juguè. It’s because it’s in the past!

Preterite Trigger Words
• anteayer • el dia anterior • ayer • el jueves pasado • la semana pasada • el fin de semana pasado • el mes pasado • ayer por la manana
Irregular Preterite Verbs
Occasionally, we have verbs that don’t follow the regular conjugation rules! These verbs are called irregular verbs. The following verbs are irregular in the preterite.

-Car Verbs
• In the preterite tense, there are certain verbs that are irregular and change to CAR in the yo form.
• conocerto • reconocerto• recognize• Desconocerto • aparcarto • aplicarto
Gar Verbs
• Certain verbs change to have the ending GAR in the preterit but only in the yo form.
• ahogar • castigar • encargar • investigar • llegar • pegar
Zar Verbs
• Some verbs change to ZAR in the preterite in the present tense.
• These verbs include

Snakey Verbs
• Snakey Verbs only change in 3rd person
• Leer and Creer change from e-Y
• oir change from I-Y

You only use the preterite tense if the action is fully completed. You have to use the imperfect tense if the action isn’t completed or is still being done.

Trigger Words
• You can tell the difference between preterite and imperfect by the “trigger words” in the sentence.
trigger words for imperfect- siempre, todos los dias,etc, cada dia, etc.
Preterite trigger words: pasado, anteayer, ayer el semana pasado
Imperfect Irregular Verbs
• Only three verbs are irregular in the Imperfect.

Trigger Words and Preterite Vs Imperfect
• You can tell the difference between preterite and imperfect by the “trigger words” in the sentence.

Ser vs Estar
• Both ser and estar mean “to be” but one is conditional and one is permenent.
• Ser is permanent and estar is conditional.
• Ser is DOCTOR PED while Estar is HELPING. Ser is used for describing professions, what you are, who you are, etc. Estar is used for describing how you feel, and things that change.

Verbs like Gustar• Aburrir

When conjugating verbs like gustar, they don’t conjugate like regular verbs. Instead, you only use two endings.
-A and An
So instead of saying.. Me gusto los zapatos, you say Me gustan los zapatos. You conjugate the verbs according to the singular or plural form.
Comparatives and Superlatives
• In Spanish, they compare things the same way as in English.
• We use
• muy + adjective
• sumamente + adjective
• adjective + ísimo (-a, -os, -as)
• Menos + Que + Adjective
Transition Words
• En contraste
• Al mismo tiempo
• Igualmente
• Por esta razón
Future Tense
• In the Future, do NOT drop the ending!
• Hablar becomes Hablaré in the yo form.
• All forms have accent marks except NOSOTROS.
Future Trigger Words
• En el futuro
• La proximo ayer
• La proximo dia
• La proximo mes
• LA PROXIMO = Next
• In English, it would be like saying next week, I WILL do it.
Irregular Future Tense
• Hacer and Decir are both irregular Future Tense verbs. Some verbs will change in the future tense.

Por vs Para
• In Spanish, Por and Para are used very often and are confused very easily.
• Por• Expressing movement along, through, around, by or about.• Denoting a time or duration when something occurs.• Para• or the purpose of or in order to• to or in the direction of

• Me tienen por loco.
• Paso por ti a las ocho.
• La cena está por cocinar.
• Necesito el vestido para el lunes.
• Para un niño lee muy bien.
• El tren está para salir.
