Closing this year’s festival is one of the major discoveries of the 2015 CannesInternational Film Festival . Ciro Guerra’s multi award-winning lm is abreathtaking cinematic odyssey through the Amazon, following the quests of twoEuropean explorers in search of a rare ower alleged to have healing propert ies.

Inspired by the real-life journals kept by Theodor Koch-Grunberg (portrayed byJan Bijvoet) and Richard Evans Schultes (Brionne Davis), the lm charts eachman’s treacherous and life-changing journey. Though decades apart , both areguided through the labyrinthine rivers and jungles by the same native shaman,Karamakate (Nilbio Torres, and later Antonio Bolivar Salvado Yangiama), the lastsurviving member of his tribe, who takes them deeper and deeper into a heartof darkness. The spectacular widescreen black and white cinematography andevocative sound design combine to depict the landscapes and characters with an

hypnotic, mythical sense of wonder. This is an extraordinary lm.WINNER 2015 Cannes International Film Festival Directors' Fortnight:CICAE Art Cinema AwardNOMINEE 2016 ACADEMY AWARDS - Best Foreign Language FilmWINNER 2015 Sundance International Film Festival: Alfred P. Sloan Prize

In a truly superb performance, Dolores Fonzi plays Paulina, the daughter ofa well-to-do judge who (despite the protestations of the men closest to her)makes the decision to abandon her Ph.D. and promising law career in order toteach politics in a pioneering education program in the rural slums. The job takes

her to the border joining Argentina to Paraguay and Brazil , a marginalized areawhose forests have been violated by the lumber industry. One night, still struggling to overcome the indierence of her students towardlessons on the principals of democracy, Paulina is mistaken as the cheatinggirlfriend of a local man, and brutally attacked. In the aftermath, Paulina againdees the pleas of her father and boyfriend, and rather than return home, sheendeavours to confront the guilty parties .Santiago Mit re’s contemporary remake of the 1960 Argentinean clas sic eschewsstraightforward answers in favour of questioning observation in an aectingconsideration of how one woman weighs the experience of assault against hersocial convictions.

The enigmatic Damián Alcázar is Antonio, a onetime construction foreman whofell o the grid decades ago and is now a night watchman living in a junkyard .Well, not any more: business is bad, and the scrapyard ’s owner just replaced himwith a guard dog . Jobs are scarce in this corner of rura l Mexico, and Antonio has

to settle for pumping gas for pittance; but when an old co-worker stops by for all-up, Antonio once again gets the chance to lead a team.Setting out with four novices and a rolling spray-paint machine, the men startthe job of laying down a dashed yellow line on a 217-kilometer st retch betweentwo small towns. While on the road, a spectrum of hardships and triumphs willforce the unlikely team of mists to unexpec tedly bond.A road movie in the most li teral sense, Celso R. García’s dialogue fosters an easy, earthy camaraderie between the men, delivering both sadness and pure joy, andmaking this an irresist ible journey in which audiences will delight.
