Spelling

• All children need to be segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by known graphemes.

• All Y1 and Y2 children know a grapheme (letters) for each of the 44 phonemes.

• They need to be writing a grapheme for each sound in a word.

Page 7: Spag meeting 13th jan 2016

Spelling

• For example a Y1 child may spell – dive as dighv

• What we do not want is div where they have half recalled the ‘look’ of the spelling and the spelling is not phonetically decodable and confusion occures.

• Polysyllabic words are spelt by writing the graphemes syllable by syllable

This is why children are asked to read alien words in the Phonic Screening Test• For example – chim – pan - zee

Page 8: Spag meeting 13th jan 2016

Spelling

• Children need to be learning the rules so they can apply them to new spellings.• Knowing that many past

tense verb ends in ‘ed’ and this can sound like a ‘t’ or a ‘d’

• Identifying short vowels before a single consonant

• Changing a y to an i before adding a suffix

• From this week Y2 children will be given a spelling rule to learn each week.
