SPACE WARGAMING ANALYSIS TOOL (SWAT)

Space Wargaming Analysis Tool is an analytical tool that enables the rapid and dynamic execution of wargaming courses of action and generates critical data that can be used to inform commanders or decision makers regarding space concepts,

capabilities, CONOPs and TTPs in environments with and without space-based capabilities.

When warfighters go into battle, they make and revise strategies on a continual basis. They often protect national security, which is why they

need to make sure they are prepared to defend against whatever the enemy brings their way. Warfighters need a tool that supports the development of multi-domain scenarios to provide situational understanding of the potential impacts of strategic and tactical decisions. Enter the Space Wargaming Analysis Tool, a rapidly deployable quick-scenario generation-and-execution tool that enables high-level analysis of single or multiple platforms supporting the armed forces in a wargaming environment. The Space Wargaming Analysis Tool enables high-level analysis of single or multiple platforms supporting space, air and ground maneuver (red and blue) forces in a wargaming environment, while providing data reduction in real-time allowing the user to gain an understanding of the impacts of scripted and dynamic assets against the enemy.

• Dynamically inject multiple platforms

• Create systems in a scenario or master scenario event list (also supports the dynamic injection)

• Worldwind elevation data• Distributed interactive simulation

protocol to support stand alone or distribute

• Built-in post processing that provides the warfighter with detailed data during the study

• Graphical user interface that utilizes NASA Worldwind map engine data to create a user interface that helps the warfighter get a better laydown of the area of interest

• Developing augmented reality view for users

SIMULATING THE BATTLEFIELD

The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command is developing and deploying the Space Wargaming Analysis Tool to gain real-time understanding of the effects of its actions against an adversary. This government-off-the-shelf tool will be available to all Department of Defense organizations wanting to utilize a space wargaming environment.

The Space Wargaming Analysis Tool’s primary function is to generate red team versus blue team war games, where two sides battle each other virtually with scripted or dynamically injected interactions and the effects of those actions play out against each other. The tool is unique in that it enables the dynamic deployment of battle assets — divisions, brigades, battalions, companies, platoons and fire teams — in real time or faster than real time, providing further insight into potential scenarios. These scenarios can include uncommon events, such as degradation or jamming of communications, which force users to adjust strategies on the fly.

SWAT imports satellite flight paths and satellite constellations so that all domains, including space, are included in the wargaming analysis. A comprehensive understanding of all outcomes requires a comprehensive input of scenarios, and Space Wargaming Analysis Tool achieves just that.

MULTIPLATFORM DEPLOYMENT

The program is accessible on a laptop, however, the team is working to condense its operability to a tablet to make it even easier to use.

SWAT users get a bird’s eye view on their laptops and in augmented reality. By using augmented reality headsets and peripherals, they see a virtual sand table that enables easy collaboration and communication.

The user interfaces in both augmented reality and desktop views are based on NASA’s worldwind map engine data. This is an open-source virtual globe that allows developers to quickly create interactive and accurate visualizations of the Earth. The user interface helps the warfighter understand their area of interest.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

The Space Wargaming Analysis Tool team is researching new capabilities to add to the program, not only for its current customer, but for future customers as well.In addition to enhancing mobility, the team is incorporating Distribution A 1221-01

SWAT

inclement weather, reconnaissance, navigation and other variables and scenarios that Soldiers may encounter.

The modern warfighter needs as much information as possible before engaging with adversarial forces. The Space Wargaming Analysis Tool quickly provides planners with that awareness. The tool helps ensure troops are ready to complete their critical missions whenever they are on the field of battle.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• Develop “base case” scenarios consisting of space, air and ground entities with scripted paths

• Prototype ground entity options include division, brigade, battalion, company, platoon, fire teams, and individual entities (e.g. tanks)

• Prototype space entity options include satellites and satellite constellations

• Currently utilizes Satellite Orbit Analysis Program file data for satellite constellation paths

• Scenarios include planned events that are scripted into the base case scenario. Events would include (but not be limited to) degradation of communication, jamming, spoofing and damage.

• WorldWind 3D Terrain elevation engine• Up to three active frequencies per entity• Red versus blue• Interactive mode that allows for dynamic injection of

entities in real time • Space Wargaming Analysis Tool supports a faster-than-

real-time function and pause at the specified break point• Detailed events describing space, air and ground force

states at different points of the scenario • Supports augmented reality view of battle
