• A WORD FROM CHERI ORCUTT •

August is here... Hard to believe that the kids will be starting school again soon. It has certainly been an unusual year. I am sure that school will look diff erent for many of the children as the COVID-19 virus has had an impact on every one of every age group. As I reference the COVID-19 virus, I want to share how wonderful it was to see visits to our community resume. These visits are certain-ly not ideal circumstances, but it truly made our hearts happy to see families and tenant reunited. These visits began on July 15, 2020. Thanks to all that have participated. As a reminder, tenants not on quarantine are encouraged to have family or friends go to SignupGenius.com, search [email protected], click on Summit Pointe 45 minute visitor sign up. We do ask that everyone follow the protocol below: 2 visits per week Maximum of 2 visitors per visit Maintain 6-8 feet distance Visitors wear a mask and tenants wear them as tolerated

Again, these visits are not our ideal scenario, but until we get further guidance these are the parameters we will follow. Tenants have won-dered if they would be quarantined in the event they did visit with loved ones during our scheduled visiting timeframes. The answer to this is “no,” if you follow the protocol of no touching, remaining so-cially distanced, and masks are worn. However, we do not have the ability to schedule impromptu visits, please sign up 24 hours in advance so our team may plan accordingly. We are working hard to move in the direction of “Phase 2” per the State guidelines. This will include the return of Karen in the hair Salon. Please know I have heard your concerns and desire to get her back. We are working hard to make that happen. In the meantime, please stay safe and continue to wear your masks, social distance and use good hand hygiene.Thank you for your patience as we maneuver through thesechallenging times.

Sincerely,Cheri Orcutt

Sports Baseball is back in session! We’ve listed the games for the fi rst week of August, go to the front desk for

For Your Health

Sing, dance, move to the beat: It’s all good for mood, memory and more. If you want to do something good for your brain, turn on your music player and sing along to a few songs. Better yet, sing and dance at the same time.

It sounds like a simple exercise, but really, it’s a full brain workout. at’s because music stimulates many areas of the brain, including those responsible for memory, movement and mood. Music even gets di erent parts of the brain working together simultaneously.

How Can Music Keeps Your Brain Healthy“Nothing activates the brain like music,” says Jonathan Burdette, a pro-fessor of neuroradiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and a contributor to the GCBH report.

And all that brain activation trans-lates into some serious health bene ts. Researchers have found that music can improve sleep and sharpen memory, as well as reduce stress and stimulate thinking skills-all of which are good for maintaining brain health as we age.

“Music makes everything we know about improving your brain easier,” says Sarah Lenz Lock, senior vice president for policy and brain health at AARP and executive director of the GCBH. “it makes the medicine go down”

Music Boosts Mood, Inspires MovementWhen music hits your ears, the sound waves are translated into nerve impulses

that travel to several areas of the brain, including those that release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in pleasure, explains Psyche Loui, an assistant professor in the department of music at Northeastern University and director of the Music, Imaging and Neural Dynamics (MIND) Laboratory.

In other words, when you hear music, “it makes you feel better,” says Burdette, who emphasizes that one type of music isn’t superior to others when it comes to its mood boosting bene ts. It all boils down to personal preference, be it Mozart or Madonna.

A 2020 AARP survey of more than 3,100 adults found that a higher per-centage of people who engage in music self-rate aspects of their quality of life and happiness as excellent or very good. ey also report lower average levels of anxiety and depression.

What’s more, music facilitates social interactions-another boon for the brain. When adults sing or perform together, they experience less loneliness and a better quality of life, compared with adults who don[t create music with oth-ers, says Julene Johnson, a professor at the institute for Health and Aging at the University of California, San Francisco. And both strong social ties and im-proved mental well-being are associated with reduced risks for cognitive decline and improved brain health, previous reports from GCBH have found.

Along with improving mood, music promotes movement—another key

component to brain health. Emerging research shows that one of the best ways to protect the health of you brain as you age is to embrace healthy lifestyle hab-its, including regular physical activity. And music can be an enjoyable way to get in that exercise, the GCBH notes. Music can even make exercise seem easier and help speed up recovery a er a hard workout, the report’s authors explain.

Music enables this balance between creativity and predictability, and I think that helps the brain learn, and it feels rewarding,” GCHB contributor Loui says. “And I think that balance is really good for the brain, especially in aging.

Music Can Improve Brain Health Now e best news from the report is that it takes very little time, money and e ort to reap the brain bene ts that music provides. Recommendations from the report include singing and dancing more, listening to new and familiar tunes, and engaging in music with others.

Of course, playing an instrument is good for the brain, too, as it requires the use of many cognitive skills, such as attention and memory. “But not everybody can do that, “wake to play the violin at age 75” Rather, he says, its about making a little room in your life for music, more broadly. Even just listening to music has its bene ts, AARP’s Lock says.

As we continue along with the Covid-19 virus, you have probably seen the many signs that reference the word STRONG. Some of those sayings said: stay strong; together we are strong; America strong. All through the Bible God has encouraged His people to do just that, be strong!

When it was time for Joshua to succeed Moses, God told Joshua in Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terri ed because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Romans 15:1 says, “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 & 14 tells us, “Be on your guard; stand rm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.” Even when Paul was dealing with a thorn in the esh he pleaded three times to the Lord to remove the thorn. 2 Corinthians 12:9 & 10 goes on to say, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is su cient for you for my power

is made perfect in weakness.’ erefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. at is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in perse-cutions, in di culties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Sometimes as easy as it may sound, staying strong may require a lot of self-sacri ce. Norman Vincent Peale once said, “ e secret of life isn’t what happens to you, but what you do with what happens to you.” Ephesians 6:10-12 tells us, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against esh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authori-ties, against the powers of the dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Now with great determination let us all remain strong by following the advice of our Lord.
