Beauty

All About BROWSHow To Pluck Like A Professional

There’s a quick, simple and easy way to look years younger and all you’ll need

is a pair of tweezers.

Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and by creating the right shape you can instantly lift your face, draw attention to your eyes and look altogether more beautiful.

The wrong shape, size or even colour eyebrows can have a dramatically diff erent eff ect however and leave you looking permanently surprised, confused or angry so it’s very important to think before you pluck.

Work With What You Have

The key is to work with your natural brow shape - whatever that may be. Some people are lucky enough to have brows that naturally sweep up to an arch, whereas others are born with much straighter eyebrows and need to do a little more work to create the desired look.

Trimming

You might not think it, but eyebrow hair is often quite long. A little trimming is essential for allowing the hair to lie nicely and fall into shape easily.

Remove any hair that grows beyond your upper brow line - do this by brushing your eyebrows up - with a brow brush - and snipping off the long ends.

Next, brush the hair downwards in the opposite direction and cut the hairs that extend past the lower brow line. To fi nish, brush the hair into place. Your eyebrows should already be looking much better.

Time To Tweeze

Tweezing can be a little painful at fi rst, so it’s a good idea to open up your pores before you start by holding a warm facecloth over your brows.

Ensure that you’re working in good natural light and determine where to begin.

It’s good to start by holding a pencil vertically against the side of your nose and observe where it meets the brow - this gives a guide to where your eyebrows should begin.

Pluck any hair away that grows before this point. Take a few hairs at a time and do the same on your other brow.

Looking straight ahead, hold the pencil against your nostril and move it diagonally across the outer half of the iris of your eye - the point at which the pencil is lying is where the arch of your brow should peak.

To create the best shape for your brow, gradually tweeze a line that tapers when you reach the peak of your arch. Concentrate on keeping them looking even.

To fi nish, place your pencil back against your nostril and this time extend it diagonally to the outer corner of your eye. This is where your brow should be at its thinnest. Pluck from the arch to this point, tapering the line gradually, so that it is at its thinnest at the far corner.

Remember that the fuller your brows are, the more youthful you’ll look so work slowly and steadily, tweezing one hair at a time. Stand back from the mirror regularly to check how the shape is progressing.

Define Your New Shape

You can enhance your new shape by applying a little colour to make your eyebrows really stand out.

If your hair is fair, choose either a brow powder or pencil that’s a shade lighter than your hair colour. For dark hair, choose one that’s a shade darker. Gently sweep the product over the brow hair and set using a clear eyebrow gel.

Designing your kitchen

Using a designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour

or per job, and what’s included. A much cheaper option is to design it yourself, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances.

Many people choose the middle option of using their kitchen supplier’s design and installation service. If you’re asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces fl at. Take at least three measurements at fl oor, work-surface and wall unit height, and work to the smallest width.

If you’re using a mid-range or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a fee for them to measure up and produce a set of drawings.

Comparing prices

When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying – a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fi ttings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit fl oor and wall fi nishes? What about fi nal decorating, electrical work and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fi t worktops, sinks, taps and appliances? Is there a guarantee and after-sales service?

Checking for quality

Budget suppliers will give you machine-made units, whereas luxury ones off er hand-built cupboards by cabinet-makers. These aren’t necessarily poor quality, though they will have “plant-on” doors that sit in front of the frame, rather than “in-frame”

doors, individually made to fi t perfectly inside their frames.

Doors

Solid-wood doors with traditional mortise and tenon joints are the highest quality. In-frame doors may expand and contract with the humidity. Good suppliers off er an after-sales service to check their fi tting after a few months. Veneered doors are cheaper and easier to maintain. Check whether painted doors are machine-sprayed, or painted by hand with a brush.

Carcasses

Top-of-the-range carcasses are made of solid wood. Next-level-down ones are usually made from plywood or MDF veneer, while cheaper ones are chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs. Check the thickness of the chipboard – 18-20mm is a good guide.

How do you ensure value for money when fitting a new kitchen?

Hinges

Poor hinges are usually made from thin metal and will wear so thin that the doors hang unevenly. While many people are happy with good quality Blum or Blumstyle hinges (concealed, adjustable and available in a variety of specifications), solid brass butts are better. Check whether hinges open through a complete 180 degree angle.

Worktops

Very cheap laminate worktops can burn, scratch and wear out quickly. High-pressure laminates are more durable than low-pressure ones; check that the underside is sealed to prevent water damage from appliances beneath. In a more luxurious kitchen package, you’ll be offered solid wood (at least 4cm thick is best), granite (3cm), man-made solid surfaces (such as Corian) or even glass or concrete.

Installation

A good fitter can make an average kitchen appear fantastic, whereas poor fitting will make the most luxurious kitchen look terrible. Consider this if you’re planning on doing it yourself. If you’re using a fitter, ask to see examples of their work. When buying

an expensive, bespoke kitchen, it’s wise to use the company’s own fitters.

We all know what it’s like, over indulging on those Christmas

luxuries during the holiday period and the all too familiar mutter of, “this year I will get fi t and join a gym!”. So why do a third of Brits give up their New Years resolution after just one month? (Arthritis Research).

There are many diff erent reasons (or should we say excuses?!) to why many lose motivation after the initial hype of beginning the ‘new healthier you’ in January. Helena and Tim from Downton Leisure Centre have come up with some great tips to stop you falling off the gym horse, from just a New Years resolution to a new lifestyle.

Be realistic about YOUR goals Most of us can relate to the idealistic view of what we would like to achieve in the perfect world and how long it will take us. Now we’re not saying that for some this isn’t achievable, we’re simply saying that you have to be realistic about your expectations. For many this is the fall at the fi rst jump. Start your new gym regime with realistic small goals that suit YOU and your lifestyle, breaking them down to perhaps weekly or

monthly targets. What works for someone else, might not work for you. This way you are more likely to be successful, hence keeping you more interested for longer!

Quality over QuantityAre you doing the right exercise? When you workout you will want to know that what you are doing is eff ective and correct so that you are not wasting your time. Here at the Centre we make sure you are guided through the correct technique and that each session is designed specifi cally around you and your goals as mentioned above. Don’t rush through your exercises, particularly with resistance training. If you are short of time we can show you the best routine for the time you have.

Strength in numbers (so the old saying goes!)We’re not going to lie, for some, exercising on your own can just be… boring. Working out with friends can and has shown to have great benefi ts on both motivation and fi tness. Whether that’s taking part in a group exercise class or just coming along to the gym with a buddy, they can give you that kick up the backside that you may be requiring come January! At

Downton Leisure Centre we have Personal Trainers that can provide you with quality 1- on- 1 sessions, should you require that extra push!

Change your workoutAnyone doing the same mundane exercise programme week after week, month after month are bound to get bored. Mixing up your workout may just give you that extra bit of motivation you need. Here at the Leisure Centre, our Fitness Instructors provide all gym users with regular programme updates and reviews to track their progress. Or why not try a new fi tness class?

Work on your overall healthThere’s nothing more demotivating than working out regularly and not seeing results. Good health and fi tness are the result of paying attention to all physical and mental needs, so it's important that you're not neglecting other aspects of your life. Try eating a healthy balanced diet that not only provides you with enough energy to get through the day, but incorporates foods which will keep you going through your workout without feeling lethargic. No amount of exercise will help if you are not getting enough sleep. Your body needs time to repair itself and it does this during the night. At Downton Leisure Centre we are always here to provide you with information on healthy eating. We also run ‘A Stones Throw’ weightloss programme, whether you want to lose a few pounds or a stone, we will be on hand every step of the way.

So, that’s it! Just remember it’s not just about a New Years resolution, it’s more about a new healthier you!

The Stagecoach organisation is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this year and is

putting on a huge production of ‘Cats’ at The National Indoor Arena in Birmingham which will involve hundreds of Stagecoach students from all over the country and from abroad.

Stagecoach Salisbury & Downton have been selected by audition to be one of the supporting choirs for this March's event together with 3 solo singers and 1 dancer all by audition.

The students are busily rehearsing ‘Cats’ in the lunch hour alternating with ‘Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ rehearsals for their performance at The Mayflower Theatre, Southampton in April. Life is very busy but that is

how the students & staff like it.

Stagecoach Salisbury has been running for 16 years and Stagecoach Downton for 7 years under Principal Edith Thornton

who with her husband is delighted that students from their schools will be playing a part in the anniversary celebrations.

Gardening

Seed Sowingon the cheapIf you want your garden full of colour, interest, perfume and perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive?

Start with a little self-restraint. It’s all too easy to buy enough seed to fi ll a

tennis court when you have an average-sized garden. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself.

Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. This will not only save you money, but will also maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay.

Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise fl ower time of annual fl owers and cropping time for vegetables and herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for germination on one occasion, all is not lost.

You may not need to buy what you want. Collect seed from your garden or from gardens of friends

and neighbours, making sure that the plants are healthy and that they’re ready and ripe or they won’t germinate. Seeds labelled as ‘F1’ will produce fl owers whose seeds will not ‘come true’, meaning that the off spring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. Try to harvest the seed when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris and allow them to dry off naturally, not becoming too warm or cold. If you can’t sow the seeds immediately, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place.

A small heated or even un-heated propagator can help you reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. Choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UK-made Stewart propagators at www.pippagreenwood.com.

Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Wider spacing makes for less thinning out but if you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if

looked after properly.

Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. Indeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil.

Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings, and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be fl owering later this year too.

Visit www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email each week telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy Nemaslug and other garden products.

Easter Egg Hunt at moot gardens

The annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place in the sunken lawn in the Moot

Gardens, Moot Lane, Downton on Easter Monday, April 1st – an annual event which has taken place for about the past 20 years.

It's for children of primary school age or younger. About 3,000 chocolate eggs are scattered in the grass in the sunken lawn for the children to find. There is a staggered start and the pre-school children go first.

Tablets are wonderful things, but they can be pricey: while £400 isn’t much

compared to the price of a high-end laptop, it’s still £400. But you don’t need to spend that much to fi nd a perfectly good tablet: in fact, there are good ones for as little as £99.

The £99 tablet is Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which dropped from £129 to £99 at the end of last year (if it’s gone back up again, don’t worry - you can be sure the price will fall again very soon). While it isn’t exactly state of the art it’s still a perfectly decent tablet for watching videos, playing Angry Birds, using Facebook and so on.

If you fancy something a little more powerful but not much more expensive, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD is very good too. It boasts a much better screen, which is superb for video, and comes with more storage, faster Wi-Fi wireless networking and a faster processor. Prices start at just £159 for the 16GB model.

Before you spend £159, though, check out Google’s off ering, the Nexus 7. Like the Kindle Fire it’s

just £159 for the 16GB model, and as it’s Google’s own device it’s a proper Android tablet without the customisation that some manufacturers add to the operating system. Once again it’s a seven-inch device with a powerful processor, integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking and good battery life.

There are two other £159 tablets to consider: the Kobo Arc and the Nook HD. The former comes from Kobo, Amazon’s main rival in the e-reading sector, and it’s aimed primarily at e-book readers who fancy the odd video, song or bit of web browsing, while the latter is by US bookselling giant Barnes & Noble and hopes to carve a niche off ering electronic magazines as well as apps. Technically speaking they’re very good - the Nook HD in particular has a wonderful screen, is very light and easy to use - but tablets rise and fall on the strength of their content libraries and Amazon has the edge in that department. If you want a tablet that has lots of stuff to choose from and which is very easy to use, the Kindle Fire HD will look very attractive; if you’re more techy and want something you can fi ddle with too, Google’s Nexus is more

likely to appeal.

You can’t mention tablets without mentioning Apple, and while Apple also has a cheap tablet we’re talking cheap in Apple terms: the iPad mini starts at £269, which is signifi cantly more than other seven-ish-inch tablets - although it’s a good bit less than a full-sized iPad. Apple claims it’s “every inch an iPad”, and that’s a fair claim: it’s essentially an iPad 2 crammed into a smaller case, so it runs existing iPad apps quite happily. It has more available tablet apps than any other small tablet, it has a slightly bigger screen - it’s 7.9 inches rather than the rivals’ 7 inches, which doesn’t sound much but makes a big diff erence when you’re using it - and to our eyes it’s much better-looking and better-engineered than any rival.

Is the iPad mini worth the extra cash? If you want a premium tablet, you’re using other Apple products or you’ve already amassed a stack of iOS apps then yes. If not, you may well fi nd that a smaller rival will be just as much fun for considerably less cash.

Little WondersHow little tablets can be cheap and cheerful

The Summer Festival also gives many local clubs, charities and organisations the opportunity to take part and raise money for themselves.

The Ducks will be racing again this year with fantastic cash prizes,

corporate ducks will also be available.

Duck tickets will be on sale in Fordingbridge from 4th May. For more information, purchase a duck ticket or make a donation, please go to www. fordingbridgesummerfestival.org.uk

We are indebted to our sponsors who include to date, A & E Connock, Sandy Balls Estate Co Ltd and the Hop Back Brewery Downton.

Come along, and you will see that this is a family day with something for everyone to enjoy.

As well as a general building project, ‘Build it’ New Forest carried out extensive groundworks at my property and resolved a major ground drainage problem which I had been told was not feasible. I would not hesitate to recommend their work and general attention to detail.

Don’t Suffer In SilenceDon’t Suffer In Silence

Being able to hear is fundamental to our ability to communicate. If we can’t

hear, we can’t respond to others nor speak clearly or judge our pitch – try talking to someone with headphones and they’ll shout back at you. But like most of our senses we take our hearing for-granted and only notice it if it starts failing.

Most age related hearing loss is not noticeable until later life, but deterioration begins much earlier. You start to lose some of your range as early as in your twenties.

Age related hearing loss is much the same as other types of “wear and tear” on the body. Just as hips and knees wear out so does our hearing. Constant exposure to the noisy world we live in gradually wears away at the “nerves” in our ears, reducing their number and the range of sounds that can be picked up.

What can you do to protect yourself?

Even if you already have some loss, looking after what’s left is imperative. Be aware of situations and environments that can damage your hearing such as:

• Playing loud music through headphones and earphones

• Attending loud live music concerts - even some classical concerts

• Using simple DIY equipment such as hammers and power tools

• Day to day activities such as

riding a motorcycle (wind noise, not the engine noise as you might think) or even driving in a car with the window down (some truck and taxi drivers have more pronounced hearing loss in their right ear, nearest the open window)

• Recreational activities such as shooting

So fi rst off , be aware when there may be damaging levels of noise present and if there is, protect your ears.

Inexpensive foam earplugs can be purchased from DIY stores and some high street chemists. Most concert venues have free earplugs available, and whilst they rarely off er them to you on arrival, there’s usually a good supply behind the bar. Keep a few pairs in a drawer for use around the house when tackling your latest DIY project too.

Health

30 | The SP5 Magazine

What if you already have hearing loss?

It’s not usually that you can’t hear at all but just that it’s not clear. Often it’s the high frequency sounds that fade fi rst, such as bleeps and bells. Then it becomes diffi cult to hear what people are saying when there is background noise such as in crowds or when the television is on.

If left undiagnosed or treated, a hearing loss can lead to other problems. Because it’s unclear what has been said, socialising in groups becomes awkward. Suff erers fi nd themselves pretending to laugh at jokes when they didn’t hear the punch-line, or just nodding and

smiling and then being embarrassed because the person talking is awaiting an answer. This in turn leads to loss of confi dence and feelings of social exclusion.

What can be done?

It’s really not necessary to – literally – suff er in silence. A simple trip to your GP to arrange a hearing test or to a specialist hearing centre or audiologist will mean your hearing is tested and assessed, usually free of charge.

Discrete and almost invisible the latest aids can make such a diff erence and vastly improve your hearing. You’ll never regain what has gone, but you can make the best of what you have left.

What is it?

Land Rover’s perennial compact SUV given a little wipe over with the fl annel to freshen it

up. The changes aren’t huge inside or out, but they’re enough to give it a new lease of life. The talking points on the outside are some smart new headlights, new rear tail-lights that look like dumpy red snowmen, and a more striking grille. Inside it’s had more attention with an Evoque-ess makeover.

What’s under the bonnet?

There are two diesel units which are both 2.2 litres in size but with diff erent power outputs, 147 bhp and 187 bhp, they both off er four-wheel drive. There’s also a 150PS version in two-wheel drive form, but quite why you’d opt for that we have no idea apart from its lower CO2 emissions. We tried a brilliant 2.0-litre petrol engine too on our road test in Canada, but sadly this won’t be coming to the UK. In fact, it was actually our pick of the bunch.

What’s the kit like?

It’s on the inside where the manufacturer has really gone to

work. The centre console is new and the old Terrain Response dial has been swapped for buttons from the Evoque. A new instrument cluster has been installed which has a fi ve inch display that off ers the important details. It now has keyless go, a brilliant hitch assist that helps drivers line up their tow bar and clever voice activation. There are three new colours to choose from paint wise and the stereo system provided by Meridian is nothing short of extravagant.

Any rivals?

There are lots, and that’s the problem. Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and VW Tiguan all represent very talented and capable alternatives to the rugged Brit. All are newer than the Freelander and are tough competition to the Land Rover.

Is it any good?

If you were hoping for a whole new car, you’ll be sorely disappointed. This revision is a nip and tuck at best bringing its styling into line with the other, newer models in the range. However there’s no denying that the Freelander is extremely capable off -road – some of the terrain we tackled on the launch

was positively frightening and it sailed right through it.

What’s our verdict?

The revisions inside bring the Freelander up to date, but we had rather hoped they’d have done more with the exterior. The new lights are striking, but nowhere near as bold as its sister cars which is a shame, however its capability off road can’t be doubted and despite its age we still think it’s a rugged alternative to some often rather boring Germanic off erings. It’s worth a look for the pony-pulling set.

by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Land Rover has given its perennial premium compact SUV a nip and tuck for 2013 – but is it enough to keep buyers interested in the off -roader? We take it for a spin in the icy wilds of snow-blown Canada.

The Life List... The best things about being retiredSociety has it all wrong. At eighteen, you’re given the key to the door; and when you retire, they give you a clock. But when you’re eighteen you need help getting up. And when you retire, the door leads to a whole new life...

• Being able to spend a whole day shopping with no need to buy anything.

• Taking your work clothes to a charity shop to help those less fortunate – i.e. people still working.

• Seeing your grandchildren when they want to see you and not just when you can fit them in.

• Enjoying new hobbies, such as glamping or extreme ironing.

• Driving in rush-hour traffic, while listening to a decent audio book, just to offer commuters a smile.

• Feeling liberated when you compare yourself with your next-door neighbours.

• The novelty of actually being home when a parcel is delivered or abandoned on your doorstep.

• Turning up to your local Neighbourhood Watch meeting in body armour, a balaclava and night-vision goggles, to show them that you’re serious.

• Focusing on your abilities and aspirations, instead of just your responsibilities.

• Giving something back to the community, like eccentricity.

• Starting the business you’ve always dreamed of and buying that drum kit.

• A second adolescence with lie-ins, spontaneous sex, junk food for breakfast and all-day bike rides.

• Having the time to make sure your financial advisor is really earning their fee.
