Lesson 6
Organizing a Quick Speech
When you give an impromptu speech, you don't have much time to write aspeech. You must be able to quickly organize your thoughts in a way that will beinteresting and easy to follow. Here are some guidelines that will help you organizeyour thoughts for a quick, impromptu speech.
1. Start with a general statement of the topic. Be positive and, if possible, funny. There's nothing like humor (if it's appropriate) to catch an audience's attention.
2. Who is the person central to this topic? The introduction of a person makesyour topic personal and identifiable. Listeners like to sympathize with anotherperson in an adventure or predicament.
3. What is the most important aspect of this topic? What is the most importantthing you know about it? Present the main ideas in a clear fashion and supportthem with examples or facts.'Use your words to create pictures in the minds ofyour audience.
4. The ending is the mostcritical part. It 's the lastthing to linger in youraudience 's mind. More thanany other part, it will makeyou sound like a pro. Endwith your feelings oropinions on the subject. Saywhat you like or dislike or, ifyou can, make a suggestionon how to improve thesituation.
3. Tell about the most important ideas and illustrate the ideas with facts or examples.
4. End with your perceptions or feelings and, if possible, your recommendations.
