Blindwoman’s bus stop woes

aVisually-impaired woman who complained to dublin city council

about a southside bus stop being used by motorists for parking says she doesn’t understand why more is not being done about the problem.

Aine Wellard said the issue at bus stop No 387, in front of the former post office on Sandymount Road at Sandymount Green, includes car owners parking there to go to the shops. This has made it difficult for the bus to get to the stop and harder for her to hear it coming.

Blind woman’s bus stop woesContinued from page 1

“It has been suggested that creating a loading bay nearby would be a low cost solution,” she said. “After some persuasion Dublin City Council repainted the bus markings but have done nothing else. The bus still can’t pull in.

“On occasions I’ve walked out to a lorry because the diesel engine sounds like a Dublin Bus,” she added.“If the bus could pull in, I wouldn’t make that mistake. I’ve also missed the bus at times because it has to pull in metres short of the bus stop and I wouldn’t know.

“When you approach drivers

about parking there illegally, they do not move. They say ‘I’ll only be here for a minute, I’ll tell you when the bus comes’.”

Ms Wellard uses the stop on a regular basis during the week as she travels into the city centre where she works.

She has met with the Traffic Sergeant at Irishtown Garda Station who took photos and recognised the problem although he indicated to her that it was difficult to enforce fines as they do not have the manpower to be on call when someone parks at the bus stop.

According to Ms Wellard, Dublin City Council told her that if there are no gardaí available that she should note down

Aine Wellard waiting at the bus stop in Sandymount. She has raised her concerns with Dublin City Council.PHOTO: DARREN KINSELLA

the registration of offending vehicles and report them.

However, Aine said this was impossible as she is blind and is unable to read the number plates.

Ms Wellard said that when the bus cannot pull in properly to the kerb, this creates accessibility issues.

Ms Wellard explained that that if the bus is several metres from the footpath, it makes getting onto the bus more difficult. She related how, on one occasion, a bus driver had to leave a wheelchair user short of the bus stop because the bus could not pull in close enough to lower the wheelchair ramp.

Ms Wellard told Southside People that she is at the end of her tether. She is now considering going directly to the Equality Tribunal to make a complaint of discrimination.

A spokesperson for Dublin Bus told Southside People that they do not comment on individual complaints.

“However, I can confirm that we are currently reviewing the location of bus stop 387,” the spokesperson added.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council suggested we

contact the gardaí in relation to the matter. However, there was no comment from the Garda Press Office at time of going to press.

Unique run takes in city streetsNeil Fetherstonhaugh

A NUMBER of high-profile sup-porters, including fitness en-thusiast Kathryn Thomas, Min-ister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar, Senator David Norris, and Rory O Neill (Panti Bliss), helped launch the St James’s Hospital Foundation’s annual Liberties Fun Run last week.

The 6km fun run, which starts and ends in the historic Royal Hospital Kilmainham, is now in its eighth year.

It is a unique event in that it is one of the few road races that Dublin City Council permits.

Funds raised will go towards the renovation of Ireland’s largest free STI, HIV and infectious dis-eases service, the GUIDe Clinic, at St James’s Hospital.

The GUIDe clinic, which treats 27,000 patients per year, has been fundraising in order to improve the infrastructure of the depart-ment since 2011.

All monies raised from the 2016 Fun Run will enable them to revamp the facilities in order to continue to deliver world class treatment to patients with HIV, sexually transmitted diseases and infectious diseases in a modern

environment. Dr Dominic Rowley, consul-

tant in Genito Urinary Medicine, said: “Today, the life expectancy of someone with HIV who takes their medications on a daily ba-sis is virtually the same as that of someone in Ireland who does not have HIV.

“I am so proud to be associated with this clinic and the wonder-ful staff and patients that make it tick but as is the case for many hospitals in the country, we are currently housed in a building no longer fit for its purpose.

“That is why, being beneficia-ries of the 2016 Liberties Fun Run represents such a great opportu-nity to begin to provide better fa-cilities that our patients and staff deserve.”

Last year, approximately 900 participants ran, jogged and walked the cobblestones of Dub-lin’s Liberties, taking in James’s Street, St James’s Gate, St Cathe-rine’s Church, Thomas Street, the National College of Art and De-sign, Francis Street, The Coombe and the Guinness Storehouse.

Participants will take in the same route as last year on July 21 at 7.45pm.

Last year’s event raised over €30,000 for the hospital’s Target Lung Cancer campaign which aims to facilitate world-leading clinical

research and pursue better diag-nostic solutions that can lead to personalised cancer treatments for patients at the hospital.

The St James’s Hospital Foun-dation Liberties Fun Run will take place on Thursday, July 21 at 7.45pm. Book early as places are limited.

An ‘Early Bird Registration’ fee of €27 applies until the end of June with the fee rising to €30 from July 1.

All proceeds raised will go to the Guide Clinic Refurbishment Fund.

It is a unique event in that it’s one of the

few road races that Dublin City Council permits

We, in Southside People, rank down the pecking order in terms of the impact of this scandal. But this newspaper and our sister newspapers in Celtic Media Group have been very proactive supporters of Console over the past two years, primarily through providing substantial amounts of advertising on a pro bono basis alongside editorial and photographic coverage to promote the Helpline over the key Christmas period, when so often dark thoughts can invade the minds of vulnerable people.

Last Christmas, for example, an average of 185 people per day contacted the Console Helpline number of 1800 247 247 during the holiday period and a total of 4,116 rang during

the month of December 2015 itself. There were also many text messages sent – primarily by young men – to the text Helpline 51444.

Impossible to know, but for all the sad news stories about suicide – and each of those has associated and permanent stories of sadness in the lives of those left behind – there are countless more untold stories of those who have been helped by Console and other such organisations to the extent that they have moved from a dark place to a brighter place in their thoughts.

Southside People was approached initially by a respected business partner of ours who felt that the scale of suicide in Ireland – both in urban and rural locations – was reaching epidemic proportions. He suggested that we meet with Paul Kelly and hear of the work being carried out in Console and we have been very enthusiastic supporters even since, doing our bit to ensure that the tragedy of suicide is kept from the door of as many families as possible.

The lessons to be learnt among those with a regulatory responsibility and those dispensing taxpayers’ funding to such agencies are stark. There clearly has been too much trust and not enough verification allowed for the

opinion >>

We all feel let down by Console scandal

Southside People comment

THERE are many people who can with legitimacy feel very let down by what has been revealed about the shocking

dearth of corporate governance and internal controls within the suicide awareness and prevention charity, Console.

Chief among those are the clients of the service and those who work – both on an unpaid and paid basis – for the organisation. Also, the hundreds of people who have worked to fundraise for the charity in a country where our faith in such organisations has been severely dented over recent years.

These people have had their trust and sense of decency impugned by what has been learned through the media and HSE reports about the spending habits and apparent cavalier lifestyle engaged in by the former Console chief executive, Paul Kelly, and some members of his family.

Disgraced Console founder Paul Kelly▪

There clearly has been too much trust and

not enough verification allowed for the smiling Mr Kelly

smiling Mr Kelly. It is imperative now that the

reputation of those charitable organisations which operate in a fully transparent manner is not besmirched

by this very distasteful episode. We, in Southside People, will always be found willing to support good causes. However, we will be a lot more questioning the next time around.

Drug dealer jailed for four yearsDeclan Brennan

A JUDGE has told a heroin deal-er he was jailing him for four years “to have one less drug dealer” on the streets.

Robert Kealy (43) was arrested after gardaí stopped him and found him in possession of heroin with an estimated street value of

€7,598.Garda Paddy Farrell told Dub-

lin Circuit Criminal Court that he had stopped Kealy after he saw him acting suspiciously outside The Barge Pub in Dublin city.

A follow up search of Kealy’s home at the time led to the dis-covery of weighing scales and drug dealing “tick lists”.

Kealy, of Mountainview Park,

Rathfarnham, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin for sale or supply at Charlemont Mall on Au-gust 31, 2015.

Judge Patrick McCartan said that the only thing he could do was to jail Kealy, to take him off the streets. He said this would mean “one less dealer, one less piece in the jigsaw that main-tains this nefarious industry that

causes so much harm”.He said Kealy was selling drugs

to feed his own habit despite medical reports which warned he was in danger of facing amputa-tions if he continued to abuse heroin.

Judge McCartan imposed a five year sentence but suspended the last year on condition that he come under the supervision of

the Probation Services for that period.

Kealy’s 42 previous convictions include drug dealing, assault, theft, burglary and criminal dam-age.

Sarah-Jane Callaghan BL, de-fending, said that her client was a chronic drug user. She said he realised better than anybody else the damage he was doing to oth-ers.

She said Kealy knew his drug dealing caused misery and she said he was deeply sorry. Garda Paddy Farrell agreed with counsel that Kealy was the perfect per-son to be used to distribute these drugs across the city.

He said that Kealy was a trusted member in the community of drug users and other drug users would trust him and approach him.

One less dealer, one less

piece in the jigsaw that maintains this nefarious industry that causes so much harm

Childcare funding boostFUNDING of over €1.2m is be-ing made available to over 198 childcare centres across Dub-lin to pave the way for a major expansion of free services, the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Kather-ine Zappone, confirmed last week.

The funding is to allow pre-school services to start taking in children from the age of three under the Government’s free childcare scheme from Septem-ber – a move which is expected to see 60,000 extra children availing of services.

Minister Zappone says the move will allow children to avail of over 60 weeks of free child-care up from the current 38 weeks.

Services in each of the four Dublin local authority areas will

benefit with Dublin City receiv-ing €333,000 for 57 services, €250,000 for 40 in South Dub-lin County Council, just over €132,000 for 21 services in Dun Laoighaire/Rathdown and a fur-ther €455,000 for 80 in Fingal.

“We are just weeks away from one of the most exciting moments in the history of free childcare in this country – when three year-olds will be able to access our services,” Minister Zappone said.

“This will transform daily life for many families by giving chil-dren time to interact and play with others and by freeing up time for parents.”

The minister added: “It is im-portant to ensure that our pro-viders are able to meet demand which is why I have successfully argued for a high level of fund-ing.”

Liberties Festival aims to celebrate area’s vibrant past

featuring Sandra Oman and Amica Voice Hungarian Cham-ber Choir will perform favourite classics.

With over 1,000 participants, the annual Liberties Fun Run in aid of St James’s Hospital on Thursday, July 21 starts at 7.45pm in the beautiful grounds of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. De-tails on www.supportstjames.ie,

Festival Director Ger O’Donnell said: “The Liberties Festival was honoured to be awarded Fes-tival of the Year at the nation-wide LAMA Community & Council Awards 2016,

“We have a strong vision. And we’re building on that success with even more fantastic local venues involved this year, invest-ment in even higher production values, and a diverse programme carefully curated to showcase all that the Liberties has to offer.

“While holding to its proud traditions, the festival also high-lights the progression and evolu-

tion of the area and its creativity.“We’re offering an experience

that everyone who attends will not just enjoy, but be part of, so that wonderful memories can be created.”

Angela Smith, Head of Corpo-rate Social Responsibility at Dia-

geo Ireland, said they were de-lighted to support the Liberties Festival 2016.

“The festival continues to go from strength to strength and this year’s programme truly re-flects the unique and vibrant spirit of the Liberties,” she said.

“Diageo at St James’s Gate has a long history in the heart of Dublin 8 and a long legacy of giv-ing back to the local community.

“We are very proud to be part of this wonderful event.”

The full festival programme is on www.libertiesfestival.ie.

With 80 per cent of events free - from pop-up poetry to puppets, indie to opera, and cabaret to comedy - the festival’s exciting 46th programme acknowledges the vibrant past of the area while embracing its future.

The festival launches on July 18 with the opening of a fascinating exhibition, The Liberties 1980-1986, featuring the photographs of former news photographer, Tom Hankey, in Teeling Distillery.

Highlights this year also in-clude Liberties local and legend-ary singer, Frances Black, who will be performing in the majestic John’s Lane Church, while there will be a celebration of another Liberties native, Jimmy O’Dea, with The Life & Times in the Tivoli Theatre.

The iconic avante-garde caba-

ret artist David Hoyle, with his provocative, breathtaking wit, returns for the second year; while the final of Miss Burlesque Ireland will also sizzle with glitz, glamour and glory.

Traditional community favour-tites have lots of glory and glam-our too, such as Liberties Got Talent, the annual talent show for children and young people, which in 2016 welcomes special guest judge, Voice of Ireland win-ner, Patrick James.

Dublin’s favourite arts night, Nighthawks, presents comedy with Foil, Arms & Hog, John Col-leary and Alison Spittle, poet Paul Timoney and music includ-ing Pearse McGloughlin & Noc-turnes.

Bells ring out for new membersAaron McElroy

A BELL-ringing course for beginners is starting in Taney in Dundrum.

The course, which will run on Wednesday evenings through July and August, is intended to let people learn the skills involved in ringing bells as part of religious services.

Michael Ryan, one of the bell ring-ers in Taney, said that all are welcome to the classes and anyone who thinks they might be interested in taking it up as a hobby should get in contact with them.

“People can be any age, there are ringers as young as 12 and 13,” he re-vealed.

And there is no gender barrier ei-ther, as it is all about momentum so it doesn’t matter about strength.

“It’s a great hobby, a great workout and good fun,” he added.

He also said that people don’t have to be musical to be able to do it.

“There are no notes, it is all num-bers and the bells are just pulled in se-quence,” he explained.

“We usually don’t get loads of people in through the door, but if anyone does come along they will be ringing from the first evening,” he said.

“There might also be an opportunity to progress to ringing on a Sunday.”

When asked how he got involved in

it himself, Michael said he and a friend climbed up one day while the bells were ringing to see how they worked.

“We went just to see what was up there. The bellringer offered us a go and I was hooked from then. That was 35 years ago.”

Taney is one of five towers in Dublin that have ropes and bells.

Michael said that the bells used in Taney were originally located in St George’s Church in Dublin, which closed in 1990.

The bells were then offered to Taney and the bells rung for the first time from their new location on December 31, 1999 to ring in the new millennium.

Michael said that when he tells people about bellringing they are inter-ested and curious because they don’t know much about it. “Most people think that all bells are automated these days, either that or they think we are flying up and down like the advert on TV,” he laughed.

“But when people see inside the tow-ers they are amazed about how it all works.”

For those interested in taking a class, you can contact Michael on 0863570842.

If Taney is too far away, Michael said that he would be able to put anyone who is interested in contact with one of the other towers in Dublin, as they all would welcome new members. Some of the old and new bell ringers at Christchurch, Taney in Dundrum. PHOTO: DARREN KINSELLA▪

Southside schools are top of the classPRIMARY schools across the Southside have received awards for science and maths excellence.

The Minister of Jobs, En-terprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, announced the primary schools that have received the Science Founda-tion Ireland Discover Science and Maths Award.

They include St Mary’s Boys’ National School Booterstown, Harold Boys’ National School Dalkey and Star of the Sea Boys National School, Sandymount.

The Science Foundation Ire-land Discover Primary Science and Maths Programme aims to increase interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) among primary students and teachers.

In total 546 primary schools nationwide received the awards this year.

Schools were awarded credits for visiting Discover Science Cen-tres, carrying out investigations, using ICT and maths, going on STEM-related field trips, hosting scientist and engineer speaker visits, and presenting at a sci-ence open day in the school.

Minister O’Connor congratulat-ed all students and their teachers on their participation in Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Science and Maths Awards.

“STEM continues to be a grow-ing sector in our economy, creat-ing high quality jobs which will remain a key employer in the years to come,” the minister said.

“Ireland must ensure that we have a skilled and trained population to meet these needs.

“Bringing STEM to students at an early age is crucial to ensure the uptake of these important subjects in second and third level education and eventually as ca-

reers.“I hope these young people

have found the inspiration and support they need to go out into the world.”

New slimminggroup to open on SouthsidePATRICIA Frankland Murphy has made huge progress since joining Slimming World, not only in losing weight but also in her role as a consultant helping others.

Patricia says that prior to her weight loss and joining Slimming World in late 2014, she had tried juice diets and diet programmes.

“I was never able to stick to the diet,” she says.

“I knew I needed to find some-thing that would be a positive force in my life and not some-thing that would make me feel worse about myself.”

A friend suggested to her that she should consider Slimming World. Patricia went to the meet-ing with her friend and was im-mediately drawn in.

“I was really taken aback at how warm, caring and encourag-ing everybody was,” she recalls.

“It wasn’t just the consultant. All of the other members were so friendly and open with what was working for them and where they were struggling.

“Everyone was so positive and supportive of one another. I signed up on the spot.”

Following her success, Patricia describes Slimming World as a lifestyle change.

“I love the freedom to enjoy real food and be able to make family favourite meals like pasta, curry, and fish and chips, and to still enjoy and indulge in a Curly Wurly or a glass of wine.

“Best of all, I never feel hun-gry.”

Patricia loved her group and gained so much from it that she took up the opportunity to open her own group in April 2015 at Kilmacud Scout Hall (beside Fruit World).

The group has been a big suc-cess and Patricia is now very excited to be be opening a new Slimming World group, also at the Kilmacud Scout Hall. This new MORNING group will open at 9.30am on Tuesday, July 19.

New, existing and re-joining members are most welcome. For more information, phone Patricia on 087-7537134.

The sinus cavities are in direct communication with the nasal airways;therefore what affects one may affect the other.

there are four groups of sinuses: A. Frontal - Paired, in frontal bone. B. Maxillary - Paired, in maxilla. Related to tooth-bearing area of maxilla. C. Ethmoid - D. Sphenoid - paired in the sphenoid bone. The bones of the face and skull have small but definite movement. These movements are essential for good function anddrainage of the sinuses. If there is restriction in these movements then sinuses can become blocked by the fluid they produce, and or dust particles, etc. Anyone who has had a sinus headache knows how thisfeels. The sinus drainage also involves structures in the throat, the upperribs and the upper part of the chest. Again freedom of movement here isvital for the integrity of the sinuses. Traumas to any or all of the abovestructures may cause impairment or lack of function to the sinus pumpsand drainage mechanisms. Osteopathic treatment with regards toblocked or inflamed sinuses is very gentle and soothing. It involves insuring mobility of the structures involved in sinus drainage, and gentlemovements to the bones surrounding the sinuses. In cases where there isno permanent damage to the sinus mechanism osteopathic treatmentcan be very successful.

Norma-Jean gets back on track with Slimming World

Norma-Jean put back on all the weight. “Having three kids, I fell back into old habits,” she says.

“I was trying to follow the plan at home alone, but with little suc-cess.” The true realisation of how heavy she had gotten became clear when, at a Christmas party, one of her colleagues asked her if she was expecting again.

“At that moment, it just hit me: struggling at home go-

ing up and down like a yo-yo and

feeling like a Christmas pud-ding was not working for me.” Norma-Jean decided it was time

to get back on track and go

back to group.“When I de-

cided to go back into group, I felt embarrassed

knowing I had been there before, but it was like I had never left,” she says.

“No one judged me, and I in-stantly fell back into the group experience. Learning so much again in the first weeks restored my enthusiasm and the weight start coming off easily.

“The support of the other members was phenomenal. I hadn’t realised it before, but the key to my slimming success was

After she had her second baby, Norma-Jean piled on the pounds, so she found a local Slimming World group in Stillorgan.

“I had never experienced weight problems before having my children and was feeling re-ally low and wary about joining a group,” she says. “I was so ner-vous.”

But when she to went to the group that first night, she was immediately put at ease.

“Rachael, the consultant, was so welcoming and the existing members really made me feel at home.”

Norma-Jean took to the plan straight away.

“I couldn’t believe all the food I could eat and still lose weight,” she says.

“I was still enjoying my week-end fry-ups and my favourite steak and chips dinner, filling up on soups and pasta and so many other gorgeous foods, without the hassle of weighing and mea-suring.

“I kept thinking to myself: this is too good to be true. I was still enjoying family days out with-out feeling restricted and my husband kept looking at what I was eating saying: ‘I thought you were on a diet?’

Simply by following the Slim-

ming World plan, Norma-Jean very soon lost two stone and be-came a target member.

“When I reached my target I was ecstatic and then I decided it was time to have another baby,” she recalls.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing. After having baby number three,

MUM of three Norma-Jean Masterson, from Leopardstown, decid-ed it was now or never to get back on track with Slimming World.

not only the amazing food plan, but also the group experience. “Losing weight is so hard to do alone and with Slimming World you don’t have to. The care and motivation you receive is price-less.”

Another positive for Norma-Jean of losing weight has been the improvement in her health.

“I am now enjoying my family and evening walks, something I could not have been able to do when I was overweight,” she says.

“Thinking of walking was the last thing on my mind. Now I’m thinking of training to run a mar-athon!”

Norma-Jean gained so much from her experience with Slim-ming World that she opened her own group in the Radisson Blu

Hotel, St Helen’s Stillorgan Road, Booterstown, last December. She achieved a Bronze award and re-ceived three other awards since she opened. The evening classes take place at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Norma-Jean will also be opening a new Slimming World morning

venue at the Tara Towers Hotel, Merrion Road, Booterstown, on Tuesday, July 19 at 9.30am.

“I really want to help other people who are struggling and feeling low like I did,” she adds.

made specifically for dogs.6. Be extra vigilant with older and

overweight dogs as they are more prone to overheating. In a real emer-gency wet your dog thoroughly and use a household fan to blow cool air over his head and body. Seek urgent veterinary attention!

7. If your dog takes a dip in a lake or pool make sure you rinse him as soon afterwards as possible (perhaps keep a five litre drum of tap water in your

car for this purpose). Never allow your dog to drink from ponds unless the water is clear as algae in the water can produce toxins that are rapidly fatal.

If your dog shows any signs of distress such as excessive panting, blueness of the tongue or collapse in the heat contact your vet urgently.

If you are present at the rescue of a dog from a hot car that is clearly in distress, seek immediate veterinary advice.

Dampening the dog down with cool (but not freezing) water or cool wet towels will help to start bring down their body temperature.

It is always a good idea to have your local veterinary practice’s phone num-ber in your phone and most impor-tantly, their out of hours emergency contact number.

Hopefully you will never have to use it but it can save vital time for your dog should the need arise.

iT’s so important that dogs are not left in cars on hot days, even for a few minutes in the shade with the windows open.

Leaving the windows ajar actually does very little to lower the tem-perature inside the car and just a few minutes in a hot car can prove fatal for a dog.

Dogs have a very small amount of sweat glands, add to this the fact that they are covered in fur and it is easy to understand why they are prone to overheating rapidly in warm environ-ments.

By following seven essential safety

tips for keeping your dog happy and healthy in the heat, you can ensure that your dog is safe on and off the road this summer:

1. Never leave him in the car in warm weather, even if it feels cool outside.

2. Always take the keys with you even if you are just running back into the house to get something.

3. Consider using a car sunblind to provide shade and carry a ready sup-ply of water at all times.

4. Avoid long car journeys in hot weather, if you need to travel, avoid the heat of the day.

5. Apply pet sun cream to easily burned areas: nose, ears, eyelids and belly. Please don’t use human sun cream - it can be toxic to dogs, so visit your local pet shop and get one that is

Grooming your dog is an import-ant part of dog ownership and it also helps to create a bond between you and your beloved canine. Dogs need some mainte-nance help to look and feel their very best.

Coat Brushing - most dogs love to be brushed and grooming will help strengthen the bond with your dog while maintaining a healthy shiny coat. A dog’s brushing needs depend on their coat type and it is important to use the right tools. Bristle brushes work well for most hair types and there are brushes available for long hair and to break up tangles and mats.

Bathing - Most dogs should be bathed every 4-6 weeks. Always

use a soap-free shampoo that is intended for use on dogs. Depending on the condition of your dog’s skin and coat there are various shampoos to choose from.

Haircuts - dogs such as Shih Tzu, Poodle or Bichon need their hair cut every 2-4 weeks. This task is often best left to professional groomers.

Ear Care - a dog’s ears can be a haven for bacteria and yeast if not kept clean. If your dog’s ears are relatively clean and healthy you can help keep them that way with monthly cleaning using specically designed wipes and drops.Visit www.petworlddirect.ie for more training tips.

GETTING stateside to the US has never been easier thanks to great airfare rates, hotel deals and full

US pre-clearance before you depart.

When preparing for your exciting trip away to the US there are the usual, obvious things to remember, like having your passport, checking that your travel dates correct – and turning off the immersion!

However, there are some specific points to check-off before you go to the USA that may not be relevant to other destinations.

American Holidays have compiled a list of US specific points to remember before you head across the big pond.

Holiday InsuranceTravel insurance is a necessity. If

you are heading to a beach resort or are on an active getaway make sure to contact your insurance provider before you travel to check your policies to see if you are covered when taking part in outdoor activities, such as water sports.

ESTAAll eligible international travellers

who wish to travel to the USA under the Visa Waiver Program must apply for authorisation beforehand.

Applying for your ESTA is a simple process that can be done online at www.esta.ie. It is recommended that all Irish applicants apply for ESTA at least 72 hours prior to traveling to the United States.

PassportsSince last April, all Irish people

travelling to the USA are required to have a valid electronic passport.

If your passport was issued between March 30 and October 16, 2006, when the first e-passports were issued, then this is a non-electronic passport and must be updated before you travel, otherwise you will not be permitted entry into the United States.

In addition to this, prior to any trip, you should always ensure that your passport is valid for a minimum of six months.

Baggage WeightDifferent airlines have different

baggage restrictions so be sure to double check these before packing the kitchen sink!

This is especially important if you have a connecting flight or will be continuing to a second destination, as the limit for the second airline may be less than the original.

Car parkingWhichever airport you are flying

out of, you are guaranteed to have a wealth of parking options at your disposal.

To save yourself money and hassle, pre-book your car park before you travel so you won’t have any last minute stress at the airport.

It is also a good idea to take a photo of where your car is parked to refresh your memory when you return a week or two later.

Destination InformationKnow before you go. You should

always do a little bit of research before your trip so you’re starting off on the right foot before you get there.

It is also advisable to book some excursions before you leave so you don’t waste any time upon arrival trying to decide between the many options or queuing for hours at the attractions. Check out www.americanholidays.com for some options.

Pre-book Park TicketsIf you’re heading to a theme park destination, such as Orlando, you can book your park tickets in advance, usually resulting in great savings compared to buying them on site.

You can also book Fast Pass tickets, significantly reducing your wait time at each of the rides - something you will be quite happy of when trying to entertain the kids during an hour long wait in the Florida sunshine!

This will also help you get around the park quicker and truly make the most of your time there. Check out www.americanholidays.com for the best prices and options.

• Call American Holidays to book on 01-6733804 or call into their office just off Grafton Street at 18-19 Duke Street, Dublin 2, where expert staff will help you plan your holiday. For more information visit www.americanholidays.com.

Flights to Cyprus are back at Dublin AirportCYPRUS-BASED airline Cobalt has launched a new twice-weekly direct scheduled service from Dublin Airport to Larnaca.

The new route will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays from July 9 until September 3.

“We’re delighted that Dublin-Larnaca is one of Cobalt’s first routes and we look forward to working closely with them to help promote this new service,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison.

“Cyprus has traditionally been a popular destination for Irish holidaymakers and this new scheduled service will make it much easier for Irish consumers thinking about a summer break in Cyprus.”

Cobalt’s Chief Executive Andrew Pyne said he was happy to re-establish an air-link between the islands of Cyprus and Ireland.

“Cyprus historically hosted up to 70,000 Irish tourists annually, but with the lack of a direct air link these numbers dwindled to near zero,” he explained.

“Cyprus has a lot to offer and similar to Ireland is keen to develop alternative touristic areas. Offering more than just fantastic weather and superb beaches, Cyprus is developing year-round activities, from skiing to wine tasting and from bird watching to swimming with the turtles; it has plenty to offer all age groups.”

Cobalt is also planning to offer connections from Dublin via Larnaca to Israel and Lebanon in the near future.

The airline started operations on June 1, and is Cyprus’ first airline since the collapse of Cyprus Airways in January 2015. The new airline will operate its Dublin route with a 180-seater Airbus A320 aircraft.

Fares will start at €99 return and tickets are on sale from the airline’s website at www.cobalt.aero.

IT’S Monday morning; business as usual at an ordinary bank, in an ordinary town. Until three masked men storm the

building and hold the custom-ers at gunpoint.

Martha Wilder happens to be in the bank that day. Before the robbery, Martha was doing alright. Not brilliant but better, since she gave up drinking on the day of her father’s funeral over a year ago. She is certain that she is not an alcoholic like her father was. But still, there are six reasons why she thinks it might be best not to drink anymore. She writes them in the notebook she carries in her handbag and reads them when she needs to remind herself.

Two of the reasons are the same. A name. Some reasons are like that, she supposes. Harder to come to terms with than others. Afterwards, alone in her flat, the urge to have a drink is a physical sensation; like hands gripping her, drawing her back to her old life. She concentrates on the things she has managed to salvage; her freelance work, playing her violin, writing the novel she always talked about writing. But then a policeman arrives to take her statement. He’s a senior detective now, investigating the bank robbery. Martha didn’t think she’d ever see him again.

Tobias Hartmann, a German in his eighties now, is helped into the bank by Rosa Matus, a Polish cleaner at the nursing home where Tobias lives. As tensions mount at the bank, Tobias

is shot and now lies, unconscious, in a hospital bed. Here, finally, the past that Tobias has spent his life trying

to forget, catches up with him, takes him back to Dresden, a

city to which he has never returned. It is the winter of 1945 again. Tobias is a boy again. The bombs are dropping again.

Roman Matus is a 14-year-old Polish immigrant.

The bank job was supposed to have been the end of it. He and

Mama wouldn’t owe Jimmy anymore and they could move out of the shabby room they shared in Jimmy’s house. Now Ro-man is on the run. From the police. From Jimmy Carty and his gang. And from the image of his mother’s face when she saw it was him with the gun in the bank. Everything was supposed to have been different in Ireland.

Cillian Larkin, a detective, has been living a quiet life in Donegal. Back in Dublin on a short secondment, he is asked to head up the Garda unit investigating an armed bank robbery which has left a man in a coma and the gunman - a Polish boy - on the run. In the course of his investigation, he in-terviews Martha Wilder, a woman from his past who he finally managed to put behind him. In Donegal, Cillian’s girl-friend plans their future as she awaits his return while Cillian struggles to keep his mind on the job, and not allow his memories to distract him. But the past is like a current, tugging at him, pulling him back.

Each of the four - Martha, Tobias, Ro-

man and Cillian - are running from the moments that brought them here. To a place where the past cannot be undone and the future cannot

be known.A place called now.‘This is Now’ is out now.

‘This is Now’ by Ciara Geraghty

About the AuthorCIARA Geraghty lives in Dublin with three children, one husband and a dog. She began writing later than most, when she signed up for a creative writing class when she was 34-years-old.

Since then, she has written six novels: ‘Saving Grace’, ‘Becoming Scarlett’, ‘Finding Mr Flood’, ‘Lifesaving for Be-ginners’, ‘Now That I’ve Found You’ and ‘This Is Now’.

THE Easter Rising was a seminal event in establishing an Irish Republic. And so too was the 1918 election with the mas-sive mandate it gave for a Republic, and the actions which followed in establish-ing it.

What occurred in North County Dublin - in Howth, Sutton and Baldoyle - between 1900 and 1924 is in microcosm the history of Ireland at the time. ‘The Road to Inde-pendence: Howth, Sutton and Baldoyle Play Their Part’ tells the story of all those in the area involved in Ireland’s road to Indepen-dence from 1900 to the 1920s.

It traces that road from the Land League, the Irish Party and local participants in the 1916 Rising, to the rise of Sinn Féin in the area, and the great democratic movement for Independence that followed.

The book identifies and profiles the men and women who were actively involved in the local sections of Sinn Féin, Cumann na mBan and the IRA who, when called on to defend the Republic established in 1918, did so over the following two years.

The book also tells the story of how the First Word War was experienced in this area, the participation of local people in it and the various, often conflicting, attitudes that were expressed toward it.

Howth at that time was a very diverse place. It included a substantial minority Unionist community which was as varied in its composition as it was in its reactions to these events. The book attempts to deal sympathetically with their story, and with

the dilemmas they faced. It taps many previously unused sources in the national, military and other archives, as well as the contemporary press and, most impor-tantly, builds on the memories and records retained by families with direct connections to that momentous history.

Among these are the papers of Eamon Reid, the last commander of the IRA in Howth in the War of Independence and Civil War, and of the woman who later became his wife, Maynie Lavery. She herself was an extraordinary local Cumann na mBan leader and hunger striker.

Other revealing papers used in the book include those of old local unionist families, including the Gaisford St Lawrences, Bell-inghams, Jamesons and Greers. Fragmen-tary family rec-ords and prison notebooks also provided a rich source of material.

The book builds a powerful account of how those momentous years in Irish history were experienced by a local community. ‘The Road to Independence. Howth, Sutton and Baldoyle Play Their Part’ is published by Howth Free Press. It has 360 pages, over 100 photographs and a wealth of unique source material.

The book retails at €15 and is available at local retail outlets or online at www.howthfreepress.com

A host of celebrities are throwing their name into the ring for Chris Evans’ job on ‘Top Gear’.

The radio DJ announced his departure from presenting the hit show after just one season.

Jenson Button, Tinie Tempah, Jodie Kidd and Ellie Golding are just some of the names putting themselves forward.

It’s thought that Chris won’t be replaced but that Matt LeBlanc will continue with the show.

I must say I love Matt on it - as long as he doesn’t leave I’ll keep watching!

Susan Sarandon’s a massive fan of Melissa McCarthy. The onscreen legend says the star is a great representative for

women in the film industry. The pair worked together in the past and now Susan can’t wait

to see her in ‘Ghostbusters’, which is out next week. I can’t wait to see that one.

Barry Gibb’s next album will tell us what he thinks of life. The Bee Gees singer who made an appearance with Coldplay

at Glastonbury this year says his next record will be released in October.

Barry told us his new music will be biographical. Interesting.

Speculation is rife that the Taylor Swift/Tom Hiddleston romance could actually be made up!

Fans have taken to social media to say they’re not convinced the two are really together; instead, they think the couple are actually putting on a performance for a new music video.

They reckon the romance is fake, and all footage of them together will be used in a video for Taylor’s next single. Given the speed of their ‘relationship’, it would make some sense!

That’s it from me. Until next week

HERMITAGE Green released their debut studio album ‘Save Your

Soul’ in March this year. After shooting to Number 3 in the Irish Album Charts, the band delivered on their great song-writing potential having wowed audiences around the world since they formed in 2010. Their unique arrangement of instruments that includes the bodhrán, djembe, rhythmic guitar and banjo sets them apart as a truly original offering of Irish music.

Having already seen Aslan, The Academic, Nathan Carter and Jack L play the racecourse stage, Hermitage Green are next up when they play Bulmers Live At Leopardstown this Thursday July 14, followed by Booka Brass Band (July 21), The Strypes (August 4), The Boomtown Rats (August 11).

As always, the performances will be preceded by a top class card of horse racing and a wide selection of hospitality options available for everyone from the great value ‘Summer Bundle’ to the premium ‘Summer Party’. The music and racing festival would not be complete with-out the Style Stakes. The Beacon Hotel will return this summer as sponsors of The Beacon Hotel Dare to be Different Style Awards with over €17,000 worth of prizes to be won. Every week at Bulmers Live at Leopardstown, over €2,000 worth of prizes can be won by contestants, who will be judged by a high profile panel of personalities and celebrities.

A real Rock ‘n Roll classic arrives in DublinSINCE its first appearance at the Royal Court Theatre in June 1973, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show has become the world’s favourite Rock N’ Roll musical.

It has been performed worldwide for over 40 years in over 30 countries and has been translated into more than 20 languages. Director Christopher Luscombe created a stunning new production to celebrate the 40th Anniversary and this critically acclaimed version of the classic show is back by popular demand after embarking on a year-long national adventure starting at

Brighton’s Theatre Royal on December 17, 2015.

This musical extravaganza features all of its famous musical classics including ‘Science Fiction/Double Feature’, ‘Dammit Janet’ and of course, the timeless floor-filler, ‘The Time-Warp’.

The Rocky Horror Show was first performed on June 19, 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre and continues to break box office records around the world, currently selling out in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and Austria.

It tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank’n’Furter by chance

when their car breaks down outside his house while on their way to visit their former college professor. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity, bursting with timeless songs and outrageous outfits.

Many stars, including Russell Crowe, Tim Curry, Jerry Springer and Meatloaf have appeared in The Rocky Horror Show over the past four decades. Ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show is the boldest bash of them all. TRACK RECORD WITH BARRY MURPHY FROM HERMITAGE GREEN

1. Best gig you’ve been to in Dublin?

The public lynching of Cat Stevens in the 3 Arena in 2009 was pretty incredible. After that Metallica in 2002 in RDS was class.

2. Most memorable moment in Dublin?

Munster beating Leinster in Landsdowne Road in 2006.

3. Most ‘want to forget’ moment in Dublin?

Again, Cat Stevens AKA Yusef Islam at the 3 arena back in 2009. It was the first night of his world tour and he hadn’t toured in 30 years. He played

30 minutes of new tracks and the crowd were getting very worked up looking for old classics like ‘Father and Son’ and ‘Moonshadow’ but he instead introduced a full cast of actors who performed a play telling the story of his life while singing his songs. Cat Stevens was back stage narrating. This lasted about 15 minutes until thousands of people boo’d and left. He came back out quite defeated and then played the classics for an hour or so. It was shocking to see the reaction but kind of understandable in a way.

4. First album you bought and last album you bought?

My first was ‘Queen’s Greatest Hits’ and as I’m on Spotify these days I don’t buy albums but this morning I’m listening to Matt Simon’s ‘Catch and release’.

5. When you’re not playing music, what else do you do?

I exercise a lot and listen to pod casts all day but Hermitage Green admin takes up most of my time as I try to work out how the music industry works and how to introduce our music to international markets.

6. Who are your influences?

I really don’t know how to answer that question. I don’t strive to sound like anyone or write like anyone. I have listened to and loved music from an array of genres throughout my life and I feel like I’m influenced by each and every one of them. I love heartfelt music that comes from a place of pure passion and I strive to write music that people connect to emo-tionally.

7. If you weren’t playing with your fellow band mates, who would make up your ideal band?

Bernard Pretty Purdy on drums, Joe Dart from Vulfpeck on bass, Mark Tremonti from Alter bridge on guitar, and Myles Kennedy Alter bridge on vocals. I’ll just clap along on the side.

8. Any tips on life?Hmmmm.. I could be better

at working hard in certain relationships I have in my life so a tip for myself is all I can offer and that would be to make quality time for people you like and love. That’s when I’m happiest.

9. First person you’d invite to your party?

My best mate Cathal Garvey makes me laugh more than anyone in the world so he’s number one. If we’re talking famous people then being from Limerick the Rubberbandits would have to be invited

10. Last person you’d invite to your party?

Well, I wouldn’t invite any evil people or corrupt people but the question says the “last person” so that means I would actually be inviting them so I must have a relationship with them or a need to invite them but they may piss me off but I still like them so in that case my parents! Lol.

WEEKLY ACROSS DUBLIN

Teachers attend annual science workshopSCIENCE teachers and educators from across Dublin attended the 10th SSPC An-nual Chemistry Demonstration Workshop recently to acquire further knowledge about engaging science.

The residential workshop, hosted at Syn-thesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Cen-tre (SSPC) headquarters at the University of Limerick (UL), is designed to upskill and pro-mote science among science teachers and educators in Ireland.

It provides them with the skills to pro-mote problem and inquiry-based learning within the classroom, and to conduct over 40 engaging interactive science demonstra-tions, which are linked to real world science applications.

Science discovery is full of natural curi-osity and the workshop provides a building block for teachers to bring this element to the classroom that makes instruction ex-citing and one that fosters a better under-standing for the student.

“Courses like this are essential for teach-ers’ continuous professional development,” said Dr Sarah Hayes, SSPC Education and Outreach Officer.

The focus of the course is to utilise dem-onstrations and ‘mysteries’ to promote pupil engagement, problem solving and inquiry skills. The residential element offers teach-ers a chance to fully immerse themselves in

their own professional development, and de-velop a repertoire of demonstrations linked to the physical sciences and all aspects of the Junior and Leaving Certificate curricu-lum. Supporting teachers’ development is vital for the enhancement of the Irish educa-tion system.”

The 10th SSPC Annual Chemistry Demon-stration Workshop is an important element of Science Foundation Ireland’s (SFI) public engagement remit and SSPC’s education and outreach programme.

It aims to support teachers in their abil-ity to make pathways to navigate better en-gagement and bring novel science ideas into the classroom.

“SSPC plays a critical role in support-ing STEM education in Ireland,” said Jon O’Halloran SSPC General Manager.

The SSPC’s education and outreach pro-gramme aims to inspire young minds as to the possibilities and application of science in our everyday lives, and develop Ireland as a country with a scientifically literate popula-tion.

“This year the workshop was linked with the European Union funded TEMI project, which placed a significant emphasis on inquiry-based skills, explicitly linking the course to the upcoming Junior and Senior curricula.

“This combined approach provides teach-ers with the time and space in which to de-

velop new and exciting content for their les-sons that will excite and stimulate students’ interest in science and scientific careers.”

Teachers participating in the course be-lieved that “the change of approach to chem-istry, the emphasis on getting the pupils to participate and guess the answers and using questioning to lead them to understanding” was incredibly beneficial.

The SSPC Annual Chemistry Demonstra-tion Workshop was supported by the Synthe-sis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC), the Department of Chemical and Environmental Sciences (CES), University of Limerick, Pharmachemical Ireland, the Pro-fessional Development Service for Teachers (PDST), The Institute of Physics Ireland, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Additional support and funding was provided by EU Project.

The workshop has been developed upon the foundations of Student Active Learning in Science (SALiS), an international project, which utilises best-practice teaching meth-ods within science education, funded by EU-TEMPUS.

On-going research is continuing through the EU FP7 funded project TEMI.

Volkswagen is the Carrier of KingsSeán Creedon

VOLKSWAGEN has introduced a revamped version of their mas-sive seven-seater Sharan to the Irish market. I showed the car to a friend last week and his first words to me were ‘‘it’s so like the Seat Alhambra, but I’m not complaining, the Alhambra is a bril-liant car.’’

Yes, the Sharan and the Al-hambra share the same plat-form, but then so many new cars now share platforms and various other parts, especially if like in this instance they come from the same VW group. This is the sec-ond generation of the Sharan and the first generation was also re-lated to the Ford Galaxy, all great people carriers.

The Sharan can be described as a genuine seven-seater in that the third row of seats, which are often small and only suitable for

children, are big enough for two adults.

It truly is a massive motor and when you sit in there is a massive windscreen in your line of vision. Coupled with the high driving position, you will really feel safe and comfortable as you hit the road with the family on board.

The electric sliding doors are really impressive. But how many times did family members try and pull the doors, which work by gently pressing on the door handle; no force is needed.

The Sharan would be ideal if you are using the car for taxi work as the electric doors would be perfect for customers enter-ing and exiting the car. But if you are transporting children it’s good to know that there are three individual seats with Isofix child seat fixtures and each seat can be slid forward or back inde-pendent of the others.

The leg space for the two peo-ple in the third row will depend on the positioning of the middle row, but everything is flexible and you should be able to reach a compromise for all seven, who are unlikely to be the same age or height.

There are several discreet storage areas in the cabin. These are under the seats, in the roof, on top of the dash and behind

the seats. You might not have much luggage space in the boot, but there are plenty of cubby holes to store items throughout the car. Naturally it’s a long mo-tor and you will appreciate the reversing camera.

Two trim levels, but just one engine, the 2.0-litre diesel with 150 brake horse power. The Com-fortline version starts at €42,500 and comes with 16-inch alloys, cruise control etc. The higher speced Highline version starts a t €46,760. Also available in auto-matic. Road tax is €270. For the record the Seat Alhambra starts at €38,995.

With seven individual seats naturally there is going to be lit-tle luggage space, assuming you are going to use all seven seats. That means no room for a spare

wheel, but the tyres are run-flat.I loved it and I suppose the

greatest praise I could give is to say that I wished I was young again. I had five brothers and two sisters, but the only people carrier we ever got near was a

pony and trap. The name Sharan is derived

from a Persian word meaning, Carrier of Kings. A very appropri-ate name for this massive people or maybe that should be ‘King Carrier.’

Fab floral fashions for summer

ors,” says Lafferty.“Symbolising freshness, they

bring a femininity and prettiness that transports your home from its winter hibernation. But too often we see florals take a back seat, used timidly as a finishing touch or thrown into a chintzy country cottage setting.

“Florals are having their mo-ment and it’s time to totally re-invent the living space with this tried and tested trend.

“This bold look takes foliate inspiration from high-fashion, including recent shows from Prada and Christopher Kane, to push the boundaries of interior design.

“While this interpretation wouldn’t work for every home, I hope that it encourages people to step away from the tradition and gives them tips to do so in just a few easy steps.”

Here are Lafferty’s tips on how to recreate the look at home:

• Go with what feels right for you. This high-impact look won’t work for everyone, but try intro-ducing a bold print on just one wall, for example, or adding flow-ers in different sized ceramic and metallic vases to bring the room up to date.

• One key trend we’re seeing lately across the world of inte-riors is to bring personality to a space and this look gives you a real opportunity to express yourselves. Your home is your personal space, so it’s important to make your mark in your own unique way. I would encourage people to be brave and expres-sive! I was personally captivated by Sofia Coppola’s Dior campaign, so took the opportunity to play with whimsical giant balloons.

• I like to create deliberately framed views in my designs. I work with clients to frame and showcase their furniture and treasured items. The architec-ture, architraves and doorways act as views, framing your interi-ors and maximising the space.

With this campaign, I sought to exaggerate the idea of framing by creating a 3D frame within the room. This creates a room within

One of them is rising star and award winning interior designer, Roisin Lafferty, from Ranelagh, who has teamed up with DFS to create a look that pushes the boundaries to create an artistic and abstract take on the popular floral micro trend.

The look features large-scale

floral prints and bold bursts of block colour, complemented by the softer pastel tones of the Scandi inspired DFS Betsy Sofa to create a look that is designed to shock the senses with a punch of botanical brilliance.

“Florals have always been a mainstay in the world of interi-

FLORAL prints have long been a style staple and interiors favour-ite, but this summer they are among the hottest fashion and in-teriors trends, with top designers taking an ever bolder approach to deliver a burst of floral inspiration.

a room and draws your eye in-stantly to the impact and beauty of the furniture. Look at your own home in this same way.

Stand in various rooms and look at what is framed, how the spaces flow and what stands out. Choose what you want to shine in your home and frame it so it stands out. Remember to have fun with it, it can all be and should be changeable!

• Furniture is an investment, so be sure to choose colours and shapes that you are drawn to. I love to create a statement and the Betsy Sofa and Cuddler shows that pink doesn’t have to be cutesy. Both pieces have a lovely soft and feminine shape which, for me, won’t date.

• Throw out the rule book and mix patterns and prints – some-thing the catwalk does effort-lessly. While it’s important to choose the right ones, mixing patterns can create impact in the home. Floral prints complement each other and add a great mix of colours.”

• If you’re nervous about in-troducing bold patterns or state-ments into your room, opt for bringing the look to life through subtle accessories such as this

gorgeous scatter cushion which complements and adds depth to the block colour of the DFS Betsy Cuddler.
