A Beta Than Average Weekend  After months of intensive fundraising, preparation, and exciting countdowns, Southside High Beta Club members finally went to the 2018 SC Beta Convention at Myrtle Beach -- and won some top prizes while there. Beta Club is a national society that promotes the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. The motto is: “Let us lead by serving others.” At the three-day long convention, students participated in various

activities ranging from math competitions to scrapbook decoration contests.   For the first time in history, Southside earned the Gold Key Growth award for having greater than 10 percent growth in Beta Convention attendance than the previous year. Students also did splendidly--sophomore Inaya Ebrahim

won second place in Math Division I, Oscar Guillen won second place in Spanish Division II, Sofia Siddiqui, Sabrina Sabir, Lindsay Ackerman, and Shreya Sama won first place in Advertising Design, Brinton Gambrell, Bryson

Scott, Dravon Drummond, Rochelle Sullivan, and Jasmine Klugh won second place Beta Build, Miracle Johnson, Maheen Ahmed and Sanju Kondapalli won second place in Spotlight on Service, Sabrina Sabir, Mehika Patel, Michael Ayala and Francisco Chavez won second place in Technology, Kathryn Ford and Taylor Sligh won second place in the scavenger hunt, and Apoorva Mahendranath won first place in Visual Arts:

Mixed Media. Overall we won eight awards, two more than last year, which not only shows the outstanding growth of the club’s quantity but also the growth of quality.  While students won various awards, they also got to enjoy the beautiful scenery at Myrtle Beach and meet with students from all over the state. At the annual Beta Dance, students relaxed and mingled with other Betas, creating a stronger name for Southside and proving their school spirit. One of the

most important things students learned at the trip was school spirit; after each person won an award, Southside students got out of their chairs, waved their hands around, and screamed out of excitement. The trip allowed students to be more comfortable with their school and standing as well as the other Beta members.    It’s the second year that Southside’s able to go to Nationals at Savannah, Georgia,

and we’re more excited than ever. Overall, we’ve had an upward trend in winning various awards at the Beta Club State convention and hopefully will continue this trend at Nationals and in the following years. Beta Club created bonds and strengthened relationships that one wouldn’t expect to happen on a three-day trip to the beach. This opportunity was big not only for Beta Club, but for Southside as a whole and transformed a club that was almost unknown at school to one that is now recognized nationally, and we hope it’ll continue doing so.

Falcon Heavy

Elon Musk is well known as a pioneer and his company SpaceX recently had a monumental rocket launch. The Falcon Heavy is the fourth highest capacity rocket of all time, only trailing behind the Saturn V, Energia, and N1. It combines a strengthened Falcon 9 core with two Falcon 9 first stage rockets as boosters. On February 6th, SpaceX launched this most powerful rocket in current operation.

Before the launch, Musk said, “There's a real good chance the vehicle won't make it to orbit ... I hope it makes it far enough away from the pad that it does not cause pad damage. I would consider even that a win, to be honest.” Despite these uncertainties, the launch ended up being quite a success. The Falcon Heavy successfully released its dummy payload, a cherry red Tesla Roadster playing Space Oddity by David Bowie, into space and the two side boosters successfully landed back on earth at Landing Zones 1 and 2. However, the main rocket missed its landing point on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

Although the Falcon Heavy did not achieve any accomplishment of great importance, it has set a precedent for future launches. As of now, SpaceX intends to devote the Falcon Heavy to deliver satellites and other payloads into space, but in the future, it may be used to bring crews to the moon and Mars.

Fall Out Boy’s New Album is Causing MANIA!

Rock/Punk Band, Fall Out Boy, released their 7th LP this past January after postponing their release date in September last year. The album features only 10 singles (their shortest album) with several different sounds to make their album unique in its style from their previous releases like From Under the Cork Tree and Save Rock and Roll. After the release of the first song, Young and Menace, guitar bassist Pete Wentz assured fans the remaining songs in the album would not be as EDM as the first song. However, the band faced lots of criticism for the EDM undertones and “overwash” of electronic tunes throughout the album. The album title and lyrics in the album allude to Wentz’ personal struggle with Bipolar disease but holds these lyrics upon more upbeat and relatively light soundtracks. These soundtracks vary from EDM type sounds (Young and Menace) to Gospel sounds (Heaven’s Gate) to Reggae-rock. No matter what critics say, the album is a lyrical masterpiece. They hold a large number of pop-culture references including the following:  -Songs Bishops Knife Trick and Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea names based on James Cameron’s “Aliens” -Wilson (Expensive Mistake)- name based on Tom Hanks’ volleyball in Castaway and also borrows lines from Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom.  Here’s the tracklist:

1. Young and Menace 2. Champion 3. Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea 4. HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T

14

5. The Last of the Real Ones 6. Wilson (Expensive Mistakes) 7. Church 8. Heaven’s Gate 9. Sunshine Riptide (feat. Burna Boy) 10. Bishops Knife Trick

If you were a fan of the band’s hits, Centuries or any of their old albums, this album may catch you by surprise but is still worth the listen. The band has struggled with mental disorders and have found their music as a source of catharsis. Try out all the songs on the album because they all are very different and there’s at least one song for everyone.

Tiger Talks Hey Tiger, It’s Valentine's Day soon! I need help with some gift and date ideas???!!?

Don’t panic! I’m here to help. It’s nice to have someone special in your life, and it’s even better if you are able to take care of that person and thank them for what they have done for you. For gifts, I would give something that your boyfriend/girlfriend would want based on their likes. If you are not able to think of something meaningful to get them, my saffest gift idea is to alway go with a gift card! Who doesn’t love gift cards? It’s basically free money. If your boyfriend likes video games, get them a gift card to Gamestop. If your girlfriend is an avid shopper, give a gift card from their favorite place (ex: Sephora, Forever 21, Pacsun)

Dates are hard to plan! I have two potential paths you can take: go somewhere new and exciting or revisit places that hold meaning to both of you! It is definitely a great experience to do something that you have not done before such as skydiving or going on a rollercoaster, but, sometimes, it can be nice to just lay low and hang out at a familiar place. No matter where your date will take place, make sure you both are going to have fun and enjoy being together!

Have Fun! Tiger

Tiger, I need some help. I broke up with my partner. Valentine’s Day is coming up, and I don’t want to be a buzzkill, but I don’t want to see people being romantic. How do I cope with my break up and get over my disparaging feelings of Valentine’s Day?

Hey reader. I know breaking up with someone you love can never be easy, especially if that

special someone have been with you for a long time! Breakups are emotionally and mentally draining for everyone. I get it, but you need to get over it. Relationships come and go. It’s just a part of life! I’m sure the quicker you understand that, the better you will feel. Just because you are in love anymore, does not mean other people cannot be in love. On Valentine’s Day, don’t get jealous of others’

happiness. It can be hard knowing that someone is a lot more happier than you, and it’s a natural instinct to want another person to feel as badly as you do. I say that you should spend Valentine’s Day with you single friends! This way you will be distracted from your bad thoughts about love, and be surrounded by those who care deeply for you!

All the best, Tiger
