What an incredible year it has been! As we finish the year
2010 we look back to all the offerings we have had over the
last year and marvel at how far we have come in such a short
time! The list of offerings has been astounding, from health
care presentations by Ridgeview, with a wide range of topics
from Heart Health, Stress and Depression, to Taking Care of
our Skin. For the artistically inclined we have had Watercolor
classes, Fused glass pendants, Fairy Garden Houses that we
created from soft clay and watched being fired right here at
the Center! We‘ve enjoyed outings to the Minnesota History
Center to see the Greatest Generation exhibit. We had a tour
of the new Target Field and a trip to see the Twins play at
their new stadium. We enjoyed three separate Bayview
cruises around Lake Minnetonka and a trip to Canterbury
Park to see the Horse Races. We‘ve had a party to honor our
―Shining Stars‖ our terrific seniors, with great entertainment
by our own members Don Carruth and the Eureka City
Band! We had guests from as far as ―Dez Moines‖ with a
visit from ―Shirley‖. We were entertained by tales of the
―Old West‖ by balladeer Lyndon Griffin. We had an fasci-
nating presentation by Stan Tekiela on ―Uncommon Facts
about Common Birds‖. We had another fabulous speaker;
local author and Historian Bob Williams weave tales of times
around Excelsior during the Depression Years. We‘ve had
help with tax preparation from AARP, and classes on begin-
ning computers. We‘ve enjoyed lunches every Tuesday and
Thursday with our very own 5 star Chef Mary Fran. We have
exercised with Catherine and learned the importance of the
Mind/Body connection and many are currently enjoying our
T‘ai Chi Chih Class. I‘m sure I‘ve missed a few, but you can
see from the above it really has been an incredible year – and
I didn‘t even mention our activities that are available every
Monday – Friday! We have activities for everyone here at the
Center so please come and enjoy!

Safe at Home Have you ever slipped, tripped, or fallen in your own home? Are you nervous about losing your independence? Approxi-mately one third of older adults fall each year in the United States, making falls the leading cause of injury deaths and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admission. Even if you haven‘t had trouble with falls in the past, there‘s no time like the present to get started with fall pre-vention techniques. Regular, balance-focused exercise (tai chi Chih anyone?), vision checks, and medication reviews to catch dangerous combinations are all simple steps to take to keep you upright. But even the simplest home modifications can go a long way in preventing falls. If you own your own home, have homeowner‘s insurance, and live in the seven county metro area, are at or below 50% of the median an-nual income as determined by HUD, and have someone living in the home that is an older adult (55+), OR living with a disability, you qualify for FREE home accessibility modifications. Repairs are generally completed in one day by two to four qualified volunteers. Volunteers have com-pleted training with RTTC and have passed a background check. If you would like to volunteer to work on a project, or for an application for modifications, call
Erika at 651-776-4273 ext. 16.

What is Reflexology? Thursday, November 18
10:30-11:30
Reflexology is a complement to stan-
dard medical care. The benefit is the re-
duction of stress to achieve
relaxation. It is based on the idea that
each body part is represented in our
hands, feet and ears.
Pressure is applied to these areas using
specific thumb, finger and had tech-
niques.
Presentation by Ellen Hem-Ryan, LAc,
CMRT, who is certified in acupuncture,
reflexology and massage.

Please help support the construction of a new Electronic/Digital Sign and other directional signage so that everyone learns about upcoming programs and FINDS the Center; all in an effort to ‗Sustain the Center‘. In addition to being poorly lit and difficult to read, the current sign requires volunteers and seniors to drudge thru the snow or over snow banks to change the letters on the sign. This is far too danger-ous in inclement weather to expect of volunteers. A new digital sign will be attractive, bright and catch everyone's attention to join in Community Center fun and thus help keep the Community Center alive. Consider this your invitation to do-nate, or consider sponsorship towards our 2010 $25,000 appeal.
Please help us build a new Electronic sign!
