Welcome from the head of sixth form:

Welcome to Southfield School Sixth Form. Our aim is to offer students who have high aspirations an outstanding learning experience which will help them

achieve their goals and enable them to develop as people.

The vast majority of our sixth formers are aiming for university entry and Southfield Sixth Form offers a co-educational environment in preparation for this. Many students

remain at Southfield after year 11, and many also join us due to our academic reputation and wide range of enhancement activities.

In our recent Ofsted inspection, the Sixth Form is described as good. As a result of strong teaching and clear guidance, students are exceptionally well

prepared for the next stage of their education, employment or training, but don’t just take their word for it: come and visit us at our Sixth Form Open Evening.

We are also open throughout the year for visits, so please contact our admissions team for further information.

We feel that it is really important that students make plans for their future and take some time out of their busy GCSE schedule to consider life after year 11.

As Southfield School has demonstrated through continued growth in student numbers and exam attainment, students can feel reassured that they have the opportunity to

join a school that is building on its success.

“Southfield sixth form is a mature environment where we are treated like adults.

The students are all very friendly and teachers are extremely helpful.

Being part of the school council as head girl has improved my confidence and helped me grow into a mature young adult.

To put it very simply, I would recommend the school to anybody.”

• Our average points score increased again this summer – testament to the continued hard work of staff and students alike.

• This year, every student who chose to go to university achieved a place.

• 90% achieved their first choice university.

• Southfield Sixth Formers secured degree places at a range of Russell Group universities such as Birmingham (voted University of the Year by the Sunday Times), St Andrew’s (voted

runner up), Bristol, Manchester and Warwick.

• Three unconditional offers were received.

• Students are pursuing a variety of degrees – medicine, law, dentistry, physiotherapy, English, pharmacy, radiography, teaching, maths, physics, meteorology, drama, biomedical sciences, policing, history, midwifery, art, business management, accounting, psychology,

nursing, geography, and marketing, to name but a few.

• Previous students have embarked on sporting Scholarships in America, a place at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, an AAT course, and a Goldsmith’s Apprenticeship– you

A culture of achievement

As a Sixth Form we are committed to student progress and we feel that Southfield is unique in all that it offers its students. We recognise that achievement and success do not come without support and we have a dedicated programme in place to assist the transition from school to university. This also enables our sixth formers to grow as people. We encompass achievement in its broadest sense

and have a thriving Football Academy, Libero, and the Southfield Dance Academy at our school.

• Teaching staff already know or get to know students very quickly as individuals, and students feel that their teachers are approachable.

• All our year 12 attend a university/ careers fair.

• We take students to attend mock university interviews.

• We also support students in applying overseas, such as through the Fulbright Commission for American Universities.

• Students who want to apply for an apprenticeship have special events throughout the year.

• All sixth form students are encouraged in their personal, social and health development through weekly forums.

• Volunteering is actively encouraged, either in or out of school.

• We regularly monitor and evaluate student progress throughout the year.

• We offer a robust system of support early on in year 12 which is offered to students who are struggling.

• Students have study enrichment periods on their timetables to maximise their potential.

“Ever since my first day being part of Southfield, I have felt welcome and at home. Everyone one greets me with a smile, and I have never felt like an outsider just because I joined somewhere new.

That is one of the main reasons I became the Post 16 Boys Representative; I wanted to make sure that every boy joining this school is as welcome as I was, and hopefully I can help other new students see how friendly this school is, and how it can help them be successful, just like it has helped me to achieve.”Celebrating more than 100 years of continued success...

“The Young Enterprise company programme was truly an enriching experience; it is unique, challenging but most of all rewarding.

As MD of Sublime I took on a lot of responsibility but with a strong team we came runners up at the regional levels.

Despite not wishing to pursue a business career I believe Young Enterprise provided many transferable skills that are desirable for employers and universities, skills I would never have acquired without Southfield 6th Form offering this incredible opportunity.” Celebrating more than 100 years of continued success...

A world of opportunity

Southfield students benefit from a wide choice of enhancement opportunities that not only strengthen their university applications but help them develop as individuals.

What will you get involved with?

• This year Southfield had two Young Enterprise teams, Sublime and In Your Case. Both reached the area finals held in Corby. Sublime were runners up and went through to the County Final in Northampton.

• Niah Johnson (MD of Sublime) won the award for Best Individual, achieved in memory of our Jan Leyshon and In Your Case won Best Presentation.

• We also have a strong tradition of students volunteering overseas, gaining valuable life and interpersonal skills.

• Sixth Formers can also take part in a wide variety of other educational trips, such as to Iceland, to the theatre, to Auschwitz and CERN

• Previously, students have travelled to Ecuador, a fabulous four week expedition with Camps International.

• We have an award-winning School Council and all year 12 students become Buddies, mentors to new year 7 students. This year the Southfield School Council were finalist in two categories at the Pride in Northamptonshire Awards 2014

• Students can undertake the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the world’s leading achievement award for young people, and a real adventure from beginning to end.

Choose a better futureAt Southfield we firmly believe that students are able to choose a better future with us.

Students are guided to choose subjects that not only match their own strengths but also interest them too. They should check that they meet both the whole school entry criteria and the entry criteria for individual

subjects which can be found on the website under subject details.

We also work in collaboration with two other local schools: Latimer Arts College and Montsaye Academy. Through collaboration it is possible to offer students a greater range of courses.

• Art • Biology• Business Studies• Chemistry• Dance• DT Food• Economics

• English Language• English literature• Geography• Health and Social Care• History• IT• Maths

• Further Maths• Media• Physics• Politics• Psychology• Textiles• Theatre Studies

• BTEC Applied Science – Forensic Science

• BTEC Sport (Single award)

• GCSE English• GCSE Maths

• Music (L) • Sociology (M)

Subjects taught at Southfield

Subjects taught jointly across two schools (S = Southfield, L = Latimer, M = Montsaye)

Subjects taught in collaboration (L = Latimer, M = Montsaye)This enables students to choose subjects we can’t offer at Southfield.

The majority of students will begin Year 12 studying 4 subjects. During the first part of their courses decisions will be taken about which subjects students will sit AS exams in. The government has changed the relationship between AS level and the full A level so that AS is no longer necessarily a stepping stone to a

full A level. As there may be further changes before September 2015 we are advising the majority of students to select 4 subjects.

PLEASE NOTE THAT COURSES WILL ONLY RUN IF THERE IS SUFFICIENT UPTAKE

• French (S & M) • PE (S & M) • Philosophy & Ethics (S & L)
