I take great delight in being Patron of Southern Cross Soloists.

The reputation of this most sought-after chamber ensemble has grown signifi cantly in the last 16 years. I have watched its development with pride and admiration.

The increasing support for the Soloists’ world class concert performances speaks for itself on music stages across Australia and overseas.

I commend the excellent education activities of the ensemble, the workshops, performance practice, tutorials, encouraging participation and talent in young ones.

I am proud of the signifi cant contributions the ensemble has made, and will continue to make, towards the growth of Australian classical music through its broad range of activities.

With warm greetings,

Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVOGovernor General of the Commonwealth of Australia

It is with pleasure that I welcome Southern Cross Soloists to the Concert Hall stage for its 2012 season. Southern Cross Soloists is a remarkable group of Australian musicians whose unique interpretations breathe fresh life into classical repertoire.

The 2012 season offers an array of familiar classics and world premieres, masterfully showcasing the talents of the individuals of the ensemble.

QPAC is committed to ensuring that as many people as possible are able to experience our ensemble in residence and in response to your feedback, all performances in 2012 will be presented on Sunday afternoons.

I would like to thank Paul Dean for his extraordinary leadership of the Soloists thus far and welcome Tania Frazer as Creative Director in this next phase of development.

I encourage you to experience the wonderful Southern Cross Soloists for yourself.

Message from Creative DirectorIt is with an enormous sense of pride and excitement that I welcome you to Southern Cross Soloists’ 2012 Concert Series. We are greatly appreciative to once again hold our position as ensemble in residence at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. QPAC’s staff and support team have helped the ensemble grow immensely in our time here and what a better space to perform for you in than QPAC’s iconic Concert Hall.

I am honoured to be representing Southern Cross Soloists as Creative Director from 2012 onwards, and thank my fellow ensemble members and board for their strong support. In particular, I would like to thank Paul Dean – my colleague and most importantly, friend. Paul has transitioned to the role of Artistic Director Laureate – a position which embodies his tireless and astonishing work as the inaugural Artistic Director of Southern Cross Soloists for our fi rst 16 years. Paul…. on behalf of the other members of Southern Cross Soloists and myself, we sincerely thank you for your tireless work towards making this ensemble a leader in the Australian classical music industry – we would not be here without you.

Most importantly, Paul will continue performing with us as an ensemble member and will be featured as both a soloist and composer in our second concert for 2012.

You will notice some new faces in Southern Cross Soloists this year and it is with pure delight that we welcome violinist Alan Smith and cellist Patrick Murphy as associate artists with the ensemble. What better way to re-imagine the sound of Southern Cross Soloists and inspire fresh programming than with their sublime musicianship and wonderful personalities.

The 2012 season has something for all tastes as we welcome both new faces and old favourites to share the stage with us. Sydney Symphony Orchestra Associate Principal Flute Emma Sholl, harpist Lucy Reeves, Queensland Symphony Orchestra Principal Trumpet Sarah Wilson and virtuosic husband and wife violin duo, Jack Liebeck and Victoria Sayles.

The curtain is raised and we are ready to go!

Welcome to SxS 2012…

Tania FrazerCreative DirectorSouthern Cross Soloists

Message from Artistic Director LaureateWhat an adventure the last 16 years has been. As many of you know, Southern Cross Soloists came from humble beginnings – a group of friends wanting to enjoy fi ne music making together. It’s amazing that as the company has grown over the years I still feel the same sense of family in the ensemble when we rehearse and play together as I did years ago and am thrilled to continue as an active member of the group in 2012 despite my relocation to Melbourne.

I really feel that Southern Cross Soloists is in good hands with Tania Frazer taking on the position of Creative Director and I wish her every success in the role. The inclusion of Alan Smith and Patrick Murphy is also extremely exciting for the group, I have known these gentlemen for many years and their musicianship, style and character will be a perfect fi t for SxS and open doors to some exciting new repertoire!

Most importantly, it is the subscribers of SxS who are the real strength behind our success. We are so lucky to have the support and loyalty of a wonderful group of people, many of whom I know personally. I thank you sincerely for standing by us over the years and look forward to performing for you once again in 2012 – it will be a great year!

Serenade d’un jour

Claude Debussy 150th Birthday CelebrationSunday 22 April, 3pmConcert Hall Intimate Mode

We open our 2012 season celebrating Claude Debussy, one of the most pivotal composers to span the 19th and 20th Centuries and one whose extraordinary use of tone colour, timbre and harmonies altered the direction of classical music.

From the haunting Syrinx, played by guest fl autist Emma Sholl, to arguably his most famous work; Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, inspired by the evocative poetry of Stéphane Mallarmé, join us in exploring Debussy’s inimitable talent to conjure a sense of veiled imagery through this transcendent and beautiful music. Also included in the program is Debussy’s Sonata for Cello, one of his only complete sonatas for any instrument. The vocal works of Francis Poulenc and Maurice Ravel’s famous Mother Goose Suite draw the afternoon of French music to a close.

RhapsodySunday 29 July, 3pmConcert Hall Intimate Mode

George Gershwin’s iconic piece, Rhapsody in Blue, was one of the fi rst mainstream piano concertos to crossover into the world of jazz. Starting with the famous (impossible to play) clarinet glissando, it is a fun, brilliant and virtuosic feat for all.

In this program we feature two other rhapsodies: Debussy’s Premier Rhapsody for clarinet Premier Rhapsody for clarinet Premier Rhapsodyfeaturing Southern Cross Soloists member Paul Dean, and Dean’s own composition, Rhapsody for Southern Cross Soloists – a world premiere. Paul has insisted on the inclusion of the contraforte (a groundbreaking re-invention of the sometimes awkward contrabassoon) in his piece, so we welcome contraforte expert Brock Imison of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

We will also be joined by Principal Trumpet of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Sarah Wilson, in the Gershwin and in a delightful trio sonata by Vivaldi. Soprano Margaret Schindler will also fascinate with the intriguing songs of Aaron Copland based on the haunting poetry of Emily Dickinson.

Jack and VickySunday 18 November, 3pmConcert Hall Intimate Mode

We are delighted to welcome Jack Liebeck and Vicky Sayles as joint violin soloists for this wonderful program. From the famous Bach Concerto for two violins, with a particularly gorgeous adagio, to the romantic virtuosity of the Moszkowski Suite for two violins, to the fi ery Argentinean tangos of Astor Piazzolla, this will be a smorgasbord of violin music. We are also very excited to have the opportunity to premiere a new work by Australia’s leading ‘composer of the moment’, James Ledger.
