Traffic safety, river pollution and erosion problems were some of the issues St Martins residents raised during a community clinic last week.

The Spreydon-Heathcote Com-munity Board has planned a series of monthly sessions across the ward, where members will be available to talk about any issues or concerns.

The first was held at New World St Martins last Tuesday.

The next session will be held in Addington.

Community board chairman Paul McMahon said it was a good way to see what issues were impor-tant to the community.

“We didn’t get a lot of engage-ment with the long-term plan, but we do know people are concerned that council cannot afford the anchor projects.”

He said that locally, damage from stormwater run-off was a big issue.

“There’s been damage to properties on the hill where they’ve become waterlogged because of water coming from above. The stormwater systems need to be repaired in the hills, because if water runs down the roads it undermines the integrity of the road.”

There is an unusual new en-trant at Spreydon School this month.

The school is one of 48 across the city taking part in the Christchurch Stands Tall project.

They will paint and decorate a 1.3m giraffe sculpture this month, which will be placed in public parks and streets over the summer.

The sculptures will then be auctioned, and most of the money they raise will go to charities.

Spreydon School’s giraffe has been named Patch – short for People Attached to Christ-church.

Over the school holidays, pupils at the school have been collecting favourite pictures of Christchurch, both past and present, which will be used to collage the giraffe.

Deputy principal Andrea Stewart said the whole school was taking part.

“We’ve already painted his base colour, which is matched to the school uniform colour –so he is wearing the uniform.”

The sculpture will be finished and ready to be picked up at the end of the month.

Mrs Stewart said Patch had already become a favourite with the pupils.

“At the moment he’s sitting in our office area, and the kids come in and give him cuddles.”

She said the project had sparked a lot of interest in giraffes, and the school was planning a trip to Orana Park to visit the giraffes there this term.

Christchurch Stands Tall is organised by Wild in Art, which has organised similar

animal-themed arts trails in 25 other cities across the world.

This will be the first in New Zealand.

As well as the schools’ sculptures, there are also 46 giraffes being created, which are sponsored by businesses and decorated by Christchurch artists.

The trail will close in Febru-ary next year, and 75 per cent of the proceeds will be donated to the Child Cancer Founda-tion and Life Education Trust.

TALL ORDER: Spreydon School pu-pils Xariah Tauamiti and Henry Jones with Patch the giraffe. Pupils at the school are painting and decorating the sculpture as part of the Christchurch Stands Tall project.

He said that issue would need to be addressed by the city coun-cil, but there were also small is-sues raised which could be fixed through an email or phone call.

The next community clinic will be held in Addington on Novem-ber 18.

Board members also plan to attend events in the area to talk with residents about issues they would like to see addressed in the city council long-term plan.

Those include the Cracroft Ga-rage Sale Trail and the Hoon Hay Fiesta.

An artist has been caught up in a dispute over whether a $30,000 mural in the New Brighton mall should have gone ahead.

Artist and graphic designer Marie Ockleford created the design for the mural free of charge, because she wanted to do something special for her own community.

The city council paid Auckland company Rockbind $30,000 to create the mural. The company has worked on several Christchurch street art works, including the mural near the Bridge of Remem-brance.

But the mural cost the city council more than $30,000, and the community reaction to it has not been positive.

Miss Ockleford said it had been discouraging to hear of a lot of negative feedback about the mural, particularly on social media.

“The reaction has been mixed, and there are quite a lot of negative comments. But I suppose you’re always going to get that with public art.”

She said most of the comments were about the cost of the mural.

Members of the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board said they had also heard negative feedback from the community about the cost of the mural.

Board member Tim Sintes said he wasn’t against the mural itself, but the money could have been used to solve more urgent prob-

lems in the area.“It’s good, it’s fantastic to have

anything done here, but funds are obviously tight right now and there are so many issues we need to deal with.”

In February, the city council allocated $30,000 from its Subur-ban Centres Transitional Budget, for temporary improvements to

Brighton Mall. City council urban design regen-

eration unit manager Carolyn In-gles said just over $30,000 was paid to the contractor for the materials and installation of the mural.

She said the community board was updated on the progress of the plans in July and September, and gave positive feedback.

But chairwoman Andrea Cum-mings said the community board was briefed about designs for the mural, but not how much it would cost.

She tried over several months to find out that information.

She said she had been told only a portion of the money would be used for the mural, with the rest paying for wider improvements to the mall.

Miss Ockleford said the contrac-tors flew down from Auckland to paint the mural, which took about two weeks.

She said that the business was the only one of its kind in the country.

“Because (the mural) has to be so hard-wearing to be able to survive the traffic, they use quite special-ised materials.”

She believed the mural could last about five years before it began to wear away.

Although the feedback from the community had not all been posi-tive, she said she was still happy with the way the mural turned out.

“The really cool thing is seeing the scale of it. It’s pretty amazing to see something I took from my journal and just drew with a pen – and now it’s huge and I can stand on it.”

She said the concept of the de-sign was “sea meets land”.

“And the big, bright geometric shapes represent the people, be-cause people in New Brighton are a really bright, eclectic bunch, and they come in all sorts of shapes!”

Three men were caught while try-ing to burgle a house in Cracroft, thanks to the quick actions of a neighbour.

The neighbour noticed people acting suspiciously at the property next door on Tuesday afternoon, and phoned the police.

The police went to the house and caught three men, two inside the property and one in a vehicle parked in the driveway.

The house appeared to have been ransacked, and a large amount of property was stacked up near the doorway.

“Without the neighbour’s input the men may not have been caught as quickly as they were,” Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson said.

“It’s really good to see members of the community looking out for each other and taking quick posi-tive action by alerting police to anything that is out of the ordinary or suspicious.”

Cracroft Residents Association secretary Rick Bolch said there was a close knit community in the area, and people looked out for each other.

The three men, aged 26, 24 and 23 appeared in the district court last week in relation to the bur-glary.

The investigation into the bur-glary is still on-going.

GAME ON: Chris ‘Ted’ Casserly has been putting in the hard yards to come out on top in the Fight for Christchurch 2014.

Chris ‘Ted’ Casserly, owner of the former Ted’s Bar & Grill in Halswell which was destroyed by fire a year ago, will be boxing in the upcom-ing Fight for Christchurch 2014 against Winnie Bagoes owner Geoff Cavell to raise money for Cure Kids. Reporter Grace Cabell spoke with him about what has motivated him to fight and how he made the career switch from Pentecostal minister to publican . . .

So Chris, I have seen a nick-name around, ‘Father Ted’ – what’s the story behind this?

Well, before I was a publi-can, I was a minister for 15 years, a Pentecostal minister. All my mates used to call me Father Chris, till one day I was having a beer with my mate down in Rakaia and someone called me Father Ted, and it has stuck ever since.

How did you get into the restaurant game? Is Ted’s the only bar you’ve owned?

Yeah, it is. I’ve been involved in the indus-try for about 15 years. I used to be the man-ager at The Fitz, Toast Bar at Sol Square, and then my last sort of gig before I bought Ted’s Bar and Grill was as the general manager at Aikmans.

How long had you owned Ted’s Bar and Grill before the fire?

Just about 12 months. So, you unfortunately lost the bar in a

fire, right?Yeah. It was determined as spontaneous

combustion, a freak accident.I was pretty gutted when I lost it. I bought

out the receivers. We were losing money for the first six months. I refurbished it and put about $600,000 into doing that. We were doing very, very well and had turned the

whole place around. Then the fire happened, just as we were coming into summer. The landlord was selling the land so I did look at buying it, but I just can’t.

Do you live in Hals-well?

Yeah, I do at the moment.Have you always lived in Christchurch?

Did you grow up here?I was brought up on the mean streets of

Aranui. Yeah, I loved it. I went to Aranui High School. I started off at St James Pri-mary School, then Chisnallwood Intermedi-ate then Aranui High School.

I see you have some pretty personal mo-tivations for opting into the fight?

Yep. I did it for my youngest daughter Courtney, who is 14 now. At the age of two, she was diagnosed with Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome, which is basically a cardio jack of the heart. A normal child’s heartbeat turns at 110 beats per minute and hers was at 280. So she was at very high risk of going into cardiac arrest.

At the age of five, she had her first heart surgery at Starship in Auckland. They weren’t able to fix the issue because if they did, she would have had a pacemaker.

We think her life would have been considerably reduced having that at such a young age.

So a new procedure was devel-oped and at seven years of age she had her second heart surgery and they fixed it.

How does she feel about you stepping into the ring?

She doesn’t want me to fight! But she’s excited about raising the funds for Cure Kids. It’s very dear to her own heart as well.

So have you done much box-ing before?

When I was 13 I used to box out at a working men’s club but that was a long, long time ago!

I’m guessing you’ve been training pretty hard, what have you had to do to prepare?

Well, I’m doing six training ses-sions a week, as well as now I’ve started to do extra swimming and things like that for fitness. I do three personal training sessions and three two-and-a-half hour boxing circuits of sparring each week.

How long have you been train-ing?

About two months now.So, Chris, are you nervous?Nope! Nah, look, I’m feeling

more and more confident each day. My fitness has improved so much, it’s incredible. I was more than 120kg when I started this journey and I’m down to 108kg now. It’s great – I can actually see my toes now!

So do you have a game plan, or is that a secret?

Survive! I just want to get out of the ring without Geoff having done too much damage to my pretty face.

Once you step foot in that ring there is nowhere to hide. Neither one of us are going to take a step backwards.

What do you think about your opponent, what are your chances?

I don’t plan on losing. Yeah, I’ll beat him. Geoff ’s a good mate so it makes this whole challenge just that much different.

So it’s a bit of a war then, is it?Geoff and I are calling it the

battle of the century. Last week Geoff turned 51 and in November I turn 49. So there is a 100 years between us.

So what’s your favourite meal? I shouldn’t say pizza, should

I? No, my favourite meal would have to be lasagna. I’d like to say I make the best lasagna in the world, but ‘mumma’ at Venuti does. You really can’t beat her lasagna, it’s the best I’ve ever had.

Do you have any other chil-dren?

I’ve got three kids: my son Alex, who is 21, and I think he’s going to be the next New Zealand barista champion. He placed fifth at the nationals this year. Then there is Kimberley, who is 19, and she is doing a degree in medical imaging at CPIT, and then there

is Courtney, who is 14 and goes to Hillview Christian School.

How do the kids feel about you fighting?

Well, Courtney doesn’t want me to, Kimberley is a bit unsure but my son Alex, well, he just wants to see me get my head knocked off!

Do you have anyone in your life that has really inspired you?

Inspiration wise, probably for me it would be Nelson Mandela. I think his ability to succeed out of adversity, and no matter what pushed him down he stood up and succeeded. As the saying goes, what does not kill you makes you stronger, and the only time you ever fail is when you refuse to get up.

Bit like you will be in the fight

then?Yeah! You won’t keep me down.So Chris, what’s the first thing

you would do if you win?First thing I’m going do when I

win (is) I am going to have a beer; I have not had a drink in four

weeks. No drinks for me until after the fight. Hopefully I’m going to have that beer with Geoff if he still loves me.

Well good luck, Chris, and thanks for speaking with me today.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

A life-long player, coach and patron of the Linwood rugby club was farewelled last week.

Ken Jane first laced up his boots for Linwood’s senior side in the 1940s and for the next 70 years gave his heart and soul to the club only giving up coaching in 1995.

‘Jano’ to many, passed away peacefully just short of his 93rd birthday on October 9. The funeral was held at the rugby club he gave so much of his time to last Monday.

A hearse took Mr Jane for one final lap of the Linfield rugby ground he spent so many cold winters giving to the club and game of rugby itself.

He was born in Christchurch and a life member of the club and was patron of the club for around 24 years.

Club president Tane Norton said Mr Jane would have watched the most games involving Linwood teams “by miles”. He would be there watching every team right from the juniors in the morning through to colts, division 2 and the senior side in the afternoon.

Mr Norton said Mr Jane coached every team at the club and was the coach that gave him his first spot in Linwood’s top side.

For more than three decades Mr Norton said every week Mr Jane would go to his house to talk about the weekend’s action.

“It was common knowledge Jano came around to my place ev-ery Thursday morning for 34 years to talk about the game.”

Mr Norton said Mr Jane would not only give everything for Linwood but would help out the rugby community across Christ-church.

“Hornby came into the senior competition many years ago and Jane came to training one night and said we are going to show them how to train and there was a protest but Jano said it doesn’t matter were going to help them.”

Mr Norton finished by saying Mr Jane would be sadly missed but never forgotten.

Mr Jane’s partner of 30 years Jennifer Wilson said he was always part of the rugby club and was famous through the 70s for the coaching of the senior side.

She said he played for the club before coaching and still has pho-tos of him in Linwood teams from those days.

Ms Wilson said it was not always rugby on his mind and en-joyed going over to the West Coast

and playing tennis.“He loved to go gold panning

and he enjoyed the bush and West Coast life. He used to go white-baiting with friends even though he wasn’t a fisherman”.

Vice president of the New Zea-land Rugby Union, David Rhodes was at Mr Jane’s funeral and said he knew him through his dad and would always have a chat to him or a beer at the club whenever he was there.

Mr Rhodes said guys like Mr Jane are vital to rugby clubs

around New Zealand and are the foundations of which clubs are built around.

“My thing with Ken was he was a great coach in the early days. He was the Freddy Allen of Linwood rugby”.

Former Linwood rugby club manager who was at the club for 10 years Norma Eivers said he would be sorely missed by the club after being involved for so long with fundraising and working bees around the club. She said he was a very good club man.

All your automotive needsIt has been 13 years since John Gale took over the Super Cheap Auto Spares shop in Sydenham, and in that time the

store, now named Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares, has grown from strength to strength.

The retail outlet is continually broadening and extending its already extensive product range to suit its customers’ needs and as John

Gale explains, that is part of the philosophy of Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares.

“We hate having to say no to our customers, so that means stocking as many different product ranges as we can. Fortunately, we have an expansive space to work with and if there is something we don’t have in stock, we’ll go out of our way to get it in for our customers,” says John.

Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares is a one-stop-shop for all your automotive needs. All the staff are experienced in the automotive retail industry. Their commitment to customer service, combined with the extensive range of products they sell, make for no better place to shop the next time you need to replace your oil and filter, disc pads, wiper blades, antifreeze or just need to pick up general car accessories.

John says the range of products at Super Cheap is getting larger and larger. The shop is very competitive with other retailers and you still get the same good service.

Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares and the rest of the retailers in the shopping complex have banded together to form the Fire Station Shopping Centre, creating a name for themselves that explains exactly where they can be found on the former Sydenham Fire Station site.

Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares is open seven days.

T he management team at Onyx Homes are arguablyunrivaled in the home building sector. With years of

experience and having previously built one of NZ’s largestnationwide building companies, at which time had won moreMaster Build Awards than any other company in the country, home building has become second nature.

Richard Freeman director of Onyx Homes says “people needto be very careful and it’s a real concern with a lot of these new“so called” building companies entering the marketwith management at the helm with no clue on how abuilding company actually runs. We are seeing plumbersand electricians starting up building companies here in

Christchurch to get a foot in the door. People should alwaysgo with a Registered Master Builder to ensure they are ingood hands and their asset is well protected”.

With the client and their best intentions at the forefront oftheir company philosophy and a driven passion to get itright every-time has been the success of Onyx Homes.

From concept design through to handing you the keys of yournew home we guarantee you only the best experience.

BY GABRIELLE STUART

Sixteen-year-old cancer survivor Aimee-Chantelle Gough has been given the opportunity to take the trip of a lifetime – and she would like to bring her mum.

The Aranui High School stu-dent hosted a German exchange student, Seike Gruning last year.

Seike lived with the family for eight months, and was there when Aimee-Chantelle was di-agnosed with synovial sarcoma, a tissue cancer.

The girls were the same age, and Aimee-Chantelle said the foreign student became “one of my besties”.

She was there when Aimee-Chantelle was diagnosed and supported her through the se-ries of tests, but had to leave last year just before Aimee-Chan-telle started her chemotherapy treatment.

Two months ago, Aimee-Chantelle got a message from Germany.

Seike and her family had raised enough for return tickets for the Aranui student to visit them.

“I was really excited, I couldn’t believe it,” Aimee-Chantelle said. “It will be a chance in a lifetime.”

She plans to travel to Ger-many in May next year, visiting several cities in Europe, and stopping over in several coun-tries along the way.

But she wants to bring her mother along, who she said had been through a lot and would “love it”.

To do that, she’s taken on the challenge of raising $4500, which would cover the cost of tickets and expenses for her

mother.She has planned two fund-

raising concerts at the school, roping in musicians from across the city to play over two nights this week.

The concerts will feature mu-sicians from all sorts of genres, including an acoustic reggae band, an orchestral band, a boy band and contemporary jazz musician.

The concerts will be held on

Wednesday and Thursday this week, from 6pm at the Aranui High School hall.

The evenings will start with a meal at 6pm, and the shows will start at 7pm.

Tickets cost $20 including the cost of the meal, and are avail-able at the door on the nights.

For more information or to make a donation, phone Aimee-Chantelle on 021 0241 5606 or email [email protected].

LOVE: Cancer survivor Aimee-Chantelle Gough, 16, is trying to raise enough to bring her mother, Maria Kahukura, with her on a trip to Europe.

Hearing Technology is fully independent and locally owned since its inception 23 years ago, with clinics in Timaru,

Christchurch, Auckland and Whangarei. The benefit of this is that they fit clients with hearing devices best for them, not best for the company.

What differentiates Hearing Technology from other audiology clinics is the customer-focused service offered. Clients feel safe and supported through diagnosis to make an informed choice. “Our average clientele is 65 years plus. Their visit to the clinic may be their only visit all week,” says John Robertson. “We try and make it special.” Hearing Technology will even pick patients up if they are unable to drive themselves to the clinic, if they live close by.

Hearing Technology utilises the latest wax removal technology. Microsuction is less invasive, removing wax by gentle suction as opposed to the traditional method of syringing out with water, which can be very risky.

While Hearing Technology offer free hearing checks. They promote full diagnostic checks which are more in-depth, recommended by doctors and ear, nose and throat specialists. This investigates the entire hearing system all the way to the brain, to

determine where hearing loss has occurred and what the best treatment options are.

Good funding is available in New Zealand for hearing aids. People with a history of occupational noise exposure can apply to ACC for funding. MOH subsidies of over $1000 are available for everyone else (if fitting both ears).

Tinnitus is a traumatic condition for some people. An extremely specialised area most effectively treated by Auckland University in the north, and now Hearing Technology in the South since one of their audiologists extended their training at the University of Auckland clinic last year. Although there is no cure for tinnitus, there are extremely effective methods of managing the condition.

The Shirley branch has extended opening hours to late night Tuesday and Saturday.

Phone 0800 142 132.

Take advantage of Hearing Technology’s promotional offers: Free wax removal for a year or 12 months’ free batteries (for patients who are already aided); save up to $3000 off a set of hearing aids if purchased before Christmas. Conditions apply for these offers. Contact Hearing Technology for details.

At the age of about 40, I developed pulsatile tinnitus in my right ear. About three months ago I developed pulsatile tinnitus in my left ear and the background tinnitus, which I have had since I was 19, also grew significantly louder. This made me deeply depressed. The high pitched pulsatile tinnitus invaded every aspect of my day and intruded into my sleep. Life was hell. I’ve been using Neuromonics now for

about two months. It still causes me some anxiety from time to time but this is usually momentary. Before, my whole focus was on the sound of the tinnitus. Over time this focus hardwires the brain to “hear” the sound. Neuromonics allows the brain to focus on beautiful, soothing sounds; Neuromonics breaks the circuit so that you’re no longer hardwired to hear the tinnitus. - Brett Clark

As in most bustling cities, the fastest and freshest food to be found in Bangkok is right on the street. ese bustling street cafés are

world-famous for delicious yet inexpensive meals cooked right in front of their hungry customers.

Tuk Tuk ai Takeaway in Hei Hei is bringing the concept of Bangkok street food to the heart of Christchurch. Chef Joy learnt her trade in this busy, historic city, running her own street café catering for locals and tourists.

Now she is bringing her mouth-watering recipes to her very own restaurant/takeaway in Christchurch. If you ask Joy what she likes about having her own shop, she will tell you she loves to cook for other people. “It makes me happy that other people like the food I cook, I like to see their smiles,” she will tell you. She is a foodie at heart.

Her focus is on good quality food prepared with fresh ingredients, resulting in a menu full of favourites, such as curries and dishes cooked in the wok like pad thai, spicy drunken noodles and chilli and basil stir-fry.

e quality of the ingredients shows through with the choice of succulent tiger prawns and crunchy chef-selected vegetables.

TukTuk Thai

An unusual addition to the choice of meats is the delicious crispy pork which melts in the mouth. e homemade peanut sauce is a light, tasty and popular recipe.

Joy’s street food roots are re ected in the lunchtime menu. Available from 11.30am onwards, the food is prepared and served quickly to t in with lunch breaks. Lighter meals such as salads, soups, homemade sh cakes and spring rolls are available as well as smaller servings of the main menu. e spare

ribs are proving very popular with customers wanting a quick meat x.

Tuk Tuk ai Takeaway is located at 28 Wycola Avenue, and is proud that their brand of high quality food is giving locals a new approach to ai food. As they are asked daily, they are at pains to point out that they are not associated with the previous tenant, Sawadee ai Takeaway, and new and returning customers have been excited with the changes Joy and her team have made.

Contact them at their Facebook page www.facebook.com/tuktuk.takeaway or visit www.tuktuktakeaway.co.nz. Bookings and telephone orders can be made on 03 349 2796.

An extensive retail selectionfor all your automotive needs

The retail outlet is continually broadening and extending its already extensive product range to suit its customers’ needs and as John

Gale explains, that is part of the philosophy of Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares.

“We hate having to say no to our customers, so that means stocking as many di erent product ranges as we can. Fortunately, we have an expansive space to work with and if there is something we don’t have in stock, we’ll go out of our way to get it in for our customer,” says John.

It has been 13 years since John Gale took over the Super Cheap Auto Spares shop in Sydenham, and in that time the store, now named Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares, has grown from strength to strength.

sydenham

Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares is a one-stop-shop for all your automotive needs. All the sta are experienced in the automotive retail industry. eir commitment to customer service, combined with the extensive range of products they sell, make for no better place to shop the next time you need to replace your oil and lter, disc pads, wiper blades, anti-freeze or just need to pick up general car accessories.

John says the range of products at Super Cheap is getting larger and larger. e shop

is very competitive with other retailers and you still get the same good service.

RETRO CURLS - The 70s are major for Spring/Summer and the way to tackle the trend is with retro curls. The look has a modern twist with low side partings and they’re completely frizz-free.

SLEPT-IN TEXTURE - Lived-in locks are huge. From beachy waves to soft and sleepy. The key is making this look undone, but well done.

The mail bags are full again. This week the tips range from a “feel-like-Cleopatra” face cleaner to a way of keeping your pot plants well watered!

Marie from Rotorua has this tip about face cleaner. “The best face cleaner you can get is ground almonds – from the bulk foods section at Pak ‘N Save. Make a thick paste with milk, and just be-fore using add a quarter teaspoon of salt. Rub fairly gently onto your skin at first as it is abrasive. Wash off with warm water. Makes you face feel like Cleopatra and her bath of milk!” Whoa!

Marie also has this unusual way of titivating silver beet. “Silver beet is our favourite vegetable. Wash well, chop very roughly and steam. Do not boil or overcook. Add a sprinkle of sugar and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Delicious.”

Nikita from Taupo has these tips for introducing fruit and vegeta-bles into the family diet. “Growing up I lived with my grandparents. I always had cereal with tinned fruit for breakfast, two pieces of fruit in my lunch plus a sandwich which normally had lettuce or something like that on it, and a piece of fruit when I got home from school. For dinner nana used to mix po-tato and kumara or pumpkin in a mash, and at least two other veges. So it’s not hard to get lots of fruit

and veges into your diet. I always went along to the supermarket and helped choose the fruit I wanted that week which made me more inclined to eat it. Now it’s just a habit to eat lots of fruit and veges every day.”

Now for another tip on cleaning dentures! J.M.L. from Whangarei writes, “To clean dentures use a teaspoon each of citric acid and baking soda. I found if I mixed these together in a container they hardened, so I keep them in separate containers. Put dentures in cup, add citric acid and baking soda, then cover with hot water. It will fizz when water is added. Rinse with clean water. Occasion-ally you will need to give dentures a clean with a toothbrush and just baking soda.”

Jill from Dannevirke has a sug-gestion for the reader who had cat invasion problems. “I have successfully used Jeyes fluid to deter cats. Sprinkle undiluted on the area targeted by the cats, but be sure to clean the area up first.

You may have to repeat a time or two, but cats hate it. It also works for dogs! Jeyes fluid can be hard to find, but I bought some recently.” [Jeyes Fluid is a multi-purpose cleaner and disinfectant that is used for a wide range of garden and outdoor cleaning jobs.]

J from Paraparaumu has this tip for getting out the last of the cream from containers. “Instead of cutting the top off a hand or body cream container put it in the microwave for about ten seconds, then pour the contents into a new container. Works well for makeup

and other products too.”KASW from Waikanae says,

“Baby wipes are wonderful for removing fly-spots from walls and ceilings.”

John from Whangarei says he got a number of great recycling tips from his latest gardening magazine. “To keep pot plants watered, punch a column of small holes down the side of a thin plastic bottle. Bury it in the pot with the top poking above the soil, and the holes facing the plant. Fill the bottle up and it will act like a reservoir and drip feed the plant.”

Spring is a really busy time in the garden, so please let us know if you have any garden tips you would like to share.

MoneyLet’s stalk about broccoli

‘We think vegetables from yourown garden are delicious anyway, and one does not need to have theexcuse of a ‘‘fasting diet’’ to enjoythem.’

IT’S been a while since wetalked about the joys ofcooking vegetables, so wethought it time to have a

little bit of a catch-up. We werereminded about it whenlistening to the author of a newbook advocating a fruit andvegetable diet for two days aweek as a means to betterhealth. We think vegetablesfrom your own garden aredelicious anyway, and one doesnot need to have the excuse of a‘‘fasting diet’’ to enjoy them.

Lilley has a favourite recipefor using up tough broccolistems in a soup. ‘‘You will need:1 onion (diced), 1 large broccolistalk (diced), any left overbroccoli florets, 1 large potato, 1vegetable stock cube dissolvedin 2 cups water, 1 tsp butter, 1/4cup milk or cream, 1/4 cupcheese (optional), salt andpepper. Saute onion in butteruntil clear. Add broccoli andpotato. Cover with vegetablestock and simmer for 30minutes until very tender.Blend and season. Reheat witha little milk or cream. Sprinklewith cheese if you like.’’

Another reader has afavourite lemon butter toppingfor broccoli. ‘‘Simply add 12tbsp of lemon juice to 115g ofmelted butter. Mix in a littlesalt and pepper to taste. Stirtogether and pour over cookedbroccoli. Serve immediately.’’

What about these tips forgreen beans with a difference.‘‘Slice the beans and cook inwater. Add a packet of onionsoup mix and slicedmushrooms. Delicious!’’

Another great way to cookalmost any vegetable is astempura, which is a classicJapanese dish of deep friedbattered vegetables (likezucchini, onions, eggplants, carrots, green peppers, sweetpotatoes, string beans, broccoli, mushrooms). Vegetables with avery high water content aregenerally not suitable, however, as they tend to releasewater into the batter whilecooking. The veges need to becut thin enough to cook in thesame time it takes the batter tobecome crispy.

To make the batter you need1 cup plain flour, 1 egg, and 1cup ice cold water. Beat the eggin a bowl and stir in the icedwater. Add the flour and mixlightly with a wooden spoonhandle or chopstick to avoidover mixing (having lumps inthe batter is a hallmark oftempura). Dip in the vegetablesand deep fry in clean oil at180C, turning occasionally

until the batter is crisp andlight golden. Eat immediatelyafter cooking, while the batteris still crispy. With agarnishing of rock salt, lemonor lime juice, or with dips, tempura is a wonderful starter. It can also be used as a sidedish, especially with fish.

Lorraine has a tip forsilverbeet. ‘‘This is a usefulway to use as little or as muchsilverbeet as you like. I use fourleaves of silverbeet choppedfinely in a batter mixture of 3/4cup flour and 1 & 1/2 tsp bakingpowder. Whisk 1 or 2 eggs, addflour and baking powder, andmilk to thin, then the greens.Fry in a little hot oil. It’s lovelywith tomato sauce, whichshould appeal to children.’’

Kris has a tip for orangepeel. ‘‘I don’t like to throw

things away. I even ‘recycle’citrus peel! I dry the peel on aplate when using the oven. After it is dry I grate or crush itand store the ‘spice’ in anairtight jar and use it in bakingto add flavour.’’

DB says, ‘‘When vegetablesbecome wilted (carrots, broccoli, lettuce, beets, celery, etc) trim the stem end slightlyand soak the limp vegetable inwarm water for an hour ormore. You will find thevegetables will become firmand fresh ready for use.’’

Lightly toast ciabatta, add half

to the vegetables and pulse to combine. Place sauce in a small stainless steel bowl, then mix in hazelnuts, remaining olive oil and red wine vinegar. Season to taste with a little salt and pepper, and set aside. Bring a medium-sized pot of water to the boil over a high heat. Add beans and blanch for 40–50 seconds. FOODAngel Hair Pasta with Seared Scallops, Lemon and Chilli

Ingredients300g Angel hair pasta, vermielli or saghettini2 Tbsp Olive oil18 Scallops1 Red chilli, finely diced with seeds removed2 Lemons1 cup Rocket, leaves⅓ to taste Salt & freshly ground

pepper

DirectionsCook pasta in plenty of boil-ing, salted water for five to eight minutes or according to packet instructions until just tender to the bite. Drain well. At the same time, heat a frying pan, add oil, then sear scallops for 1 minute on each side until golden brown. Add chilli (diced with seeds removed), zest of one lemon and juice of two, and rocket leaves to the pan and toss briefly to warm through. Add hot drained pasta to the scallops, season with salt and pep-per, toss well and serve in pasta bowls.

Coconut jelly with pas-sionfruit

While jelly is usually associated with children’s birthday parties, there is also a whole range of sophisticated jelly desserts that are great for grown-ups.

Ingredients400ml Coconut cream300ml Cream½ cup Sugar1 tsp Vanilla essence/extract1½ tsp Gelatine8 Passionfruits

DirectionsPlace coconut cream, cream and sugar in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Stir until sugar dis-solves, then remove pan from the heat and stir in vanilla extract. Place 1/4 cup cold water in a small heat-proof bowl. Sprin-kle over the gelatine and stir to

combine. Leave for 2 minutes. Heat a small amount of water in a saucepan until simmering, then remove from heat and sit the bowl of gelatine in the pan (without getting any of the water in the bowl) until the gelatine is completely liquid. Mix the liquid gelatine into the coconut mixture. Pour the coconut mixture into four small ramekins. Re-frigerate overnight or until set. Scoop out passionfruit pulp and gently mix in a bowl until loose. Turn the coconut jelly out onto dessert plates and drizzle with

passionfruit pulp.

Tip: To help turn jellies out, sit ramekins on a warm, wet tea towel for 1 or 2 minutes, then run a knife around the edges of ramekins to loosen.

Volunteers make a difference every day – from driving a van to simply knocking on doors to see how people are doing.

Volunteering is a great way to boost your own wellbeing at the same time as helping your community. Volunteering includes all of the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: it helps us to connect, be active, take notice, give and keep learning.

Red Cross’ Cross Town Shuttle is a volunteer-run service providing transport for people in Christchurch without transport of their own and unable to use public transport. Volunteer drivers and assistants take people to medical appointments and leisure activities, helping to combat social isolation and allow people to continue to lead full lives, regardless of the impact imposed by road works and post-earthquake infrastructure repairs.

With plans to expand the service, Red

Cross needs more volunteer drivers and more volunteers to help with community outreach and door-knocking. Red Cross volunteers are a diverse bunch of people who come from a wide range of backgrounds.

Before Anthony Seumanutafa was a volunteer on the Cross Town Shuttle, he used the service to help him get across the city. “I find it to be a good way to help and socialise with people, and a way to say thank you to all those for their help – three for the price of one.”

This desire to help is what unites volunteers, says Christine Williams, outreach volunteer.

“We are able to give time, empathy, a listening ear and often some contact numbers for further assistance to enable the person we visit to continue to move forward.”

If you have a little spare time you could give, why not get in touch with New Zealand Red Cross now to find out how you could help make a difference too?

The Red Cross recovery team couldn’t function without wonderful volunteers who give their time to help people in Christchurch.

Improve quality of life

Herbal cancer support

Chromium is an essential trace mineral with some surprising health benefits and may have the ability to reduce some of the common health

concerns as we age and increase lifespan. Chromium helps regulate blood sugar

levels and keep them in the normal range. Chromium appears to improve the insulin-responsiveness of the body and enhance the effectiveness of insulin. Chromium deficiency may be an underlying cause or factor in diabetes.

Chromium has been shown to reduce major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Men with the highest chromium levels were found to be 41 per cent less likely to experience a heart attack. Chromium helps stimulate muscle growth,

While working as head nurse of Sisters of Providence Hospital in northern Ontario, Rene Caisse

was told by a patient how she had cured herself of advanced breast cancer by using a herbal formula given to her by a very old Ojibway Indian medicine man. Rene noted the formula down. A short time later Rene heard her mother’s sister had cancer of the stomach and liver with a maximum of six months to live. Rene made up the herbal formula she had noted down and gave this to her aunt who fully recovered from the cancer and lived for another 21 years. Her aunt’s doctor was so impressed he asked Rene if she could use her herbal remedy with some of his hopeless cancer cases. She did, with some exceptional results reported.

muscle strength and supports fat reduction. A controlled study has shown chromium

picolinate to increase brain activity and activate specific regions of the brain improving learning, recall and memory. In another controlled study, laboratory rats that fed chromium picolinate increased their lifespan by 33 per cent.

Some studies have shown chromium picolinate to be more beneficial than other types of chromium. It therefore appears that supplementation with chromium picolinate may be a highly beneficial way to improve our health and possibly even lifespan.

For more information, visit Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, or call 388 5757.

In 1922 at age 33, Rene left the hospital and went to Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada, where she began administering the herbal formula, she now called “Essiac TM” (her surname spelt backwards), to all who needed it. Most of her patients were referred by their physicians certifying they had terminal cancers. In many cases, her patients were at the end stage of cancer and many died, but generally they lived longer than predicted, with much less pain and other symptoms. Many however fully recovered with no reoccurrence of the cancer.

After Rene Caisse died in 1978, her formula has become available again.

Cancer is a serious condition. Natural herbal and nutrition therapy may be highly beneficial. Further information is available at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy. Phone 388 5757.

green-fingered beginners

For passionate gardeners &

An attractive garden is a dream which requires proper planning and careful nurturing.

To create a beautiful landscape around your dream home you need basic garden plans to begin with.

These garden plans are generally provided by a professional garden planner or landscape designer.

The garden plans can be of many types.

You can plan for more than just beautifying your garden, your garden plans can also be made to decide the theme of the garden.

Some of the popular garden plans are:

•Garden for full sun •Garden for shade •Corner of grasses •Corner of shrubs •Corner of perennials •Island bed •Privacy garden •Fragrant garden •Vegetable garden

Garden plans give an aesthetic dimension to the garden along with its basic theme.

Colour schemes, quality and vari-ety of plants, height of the plants, border and flooring are done to give the garden its uniqueness.

The colour scheme of the gar-den is created blending the differ-ent coloured and textured plants.

The plants are also selected according to their height which creates the contour of the garden and the skyline of the garden.

Garden plans also include the kind of plants to be used accord-ing to the theme chosen.

It is very important that the gar-den plans are both beautiful and emotionally restorative.

A garden can provide a visual, perfumed, sound and tactile, sen-sory experience.

The garden design needs to complement the home and con-nect the interiors with the exter-

nal environment, making the most of the available usable areas.

Master planners know that the selection of plants is of equal importance along with their stra-tegic placement on the landscape.

Garden plans also include the planning of the garden arborsor gazebo as well as entertaining areas and garden art and furniture.

Modular design and a unique frame layout can make a simple garden gazebo.

The garden gazebo is the perfect place to relax or to hold family dinners, and other special events.

A gazebo in the garden plan ensures a favourite spot to unwind.

GARDENING

TRANQUIL: A gazebo in the garden is a great place to unwind.

WATER FEATURE: If your garden includes a pond why not make an island for plants?

Michael Winstanley FdSc Arboriculture,ISA Certified Arborist # UI-1162AT

Arborists specialise in the care of individual trees. They are knowledgeable about the needs of trees, and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work. Tree work should be done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees.Services an Arborist can Provide:• Pruning: An arborist can determine the type

of pruning necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance, and safety of trees.

• Tree Removal: Although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. An arborist can help decide whether a tree should be removed.

• Emergency Tree Care: An arborist can assist in performing emergency tree care in a safe manner, while reducing further risk of damage to property.

• Planting: Some arborists plant trees, and most can recommend species that are appropriate for a particular location.

• Plant Health Care: Preventive maintenance helps keep trees in good health while reducing any insect, disease, or site problems.

• Many other services: Consulting services, tree risk assessment, cabling and bracing trees, etc

Tips for choosing an arboristGet more than one quote unless you know, and are comfortable with the arborist.Don’t always accept the lowest bid, it pays to check credentials to ensure that you get what you pay forBe wary of cold calling individuals and those who go door to door offering bargains for performing tree work. Most reputable companies are usually too busy to solicit work in this manner For more information or a free no obligation quote contact Michael on 021 0831 7293/ 03 3602962. Experts in diesel vehicle tune-ups

Diesel Doctor Ltd on Lincoln Road are the experts in diesel vehicle tune-ups, warranty repairs and servicing. Since

establishing the business in 1994, Tony Wessels has seen the transition of the diesel from smokey, heavy and noisy to the sophisticated high tech vehicles of today.

Specialising in all makes and models, Tony says that proper care of your diesel engine is not only important for your vehicle, but saves you money in the long run and is also better for the environment.

Technological advances have lowered emission levels and allowed diesel cars to become quicker, quieter and more economical.

Diesel vehicles operate under higher pressure than standard engines and therefore need regular maintenance to ensure they perform at their best. Diesel Doctor’s wide range of speci c diesel oils means they can give your vehicle the perfect service to manufacturer’s speci cations, particularly the high specs required for European models.

Diesel Doctor Ltd is able to carry out all your maintenance to the highest level. As sophisticated electronics now control more of the car’s functions, knowledge and expertise is essential to keep diesel engines in top condition.

“With over 60 years’ collective experience

Diesel vehicles have become increasingly trusted for their durability and toughness, whether they are commercial or recreational vehicles. However they need specialised care to work to their optimum performance and longevity.

between the three of us, our experience is our customer’s gain,” says Tony.

Diesel Doctor has the latest technology to diagnose problems quickly and carry out both mechanical and electronic service or repairs.

Customer enquiries are welcomed by Diesel Doctors located at 288 Lincoln Road, Addington, where there is ample o street parking, or phone 338 8884.

Diesel Doctor owner Tony Wessels.

Braxton Car Lights are part of the BE Group, one of the largest importers of car, commercial and truck parts in New Zealand. Specialising in car lights, Braxton covers the entire South Island and the combination of their huge on-site range, national and international networks and a computerised system to match any request to the correct replacements makes them the place to visit for all your vehicle lighting requirements.

Conveniently located in Sydenham, they have an extensive range of replacement light fittings for most makes and models of Japanese, European and New Zealand new vehicles, both new and second-hand. They are fully checked and in perfect working order and Braxton guarantee that all their fittings are warrantable.

They import and export both new and used car parts so that whatever make or model your vehicle is, they will be able to help. Containers arrive monthly from abroad, full of new and used lamps, and within the BE Group, over 100,000 lamps are available.

The team at Braxton Car lights also specializes in repairs for light adjuster and light conversion of American car lights, and

their repair service includes plastic welding, drying out and resealing, re-silvering and lens refurbishment. They work closely with garage workshops, and their services can be arranged through your own local garage on your behalf. Sales Manager Richard Vernimmen says that their team is dedicated to saving their customers money, whether on late- model cars with expensive parts or early models where replacements are hard to find.

Their aim at Braxton is to supply their customers the parts that you require and a pocket-friendly price. And with heaps of available stock, they will do everything to provide a solution to their car light-searching exercise.

Call in to see them at 325 Brougham Street, between Buchan and Gasson Streets, email them on [email protected] or phone them on 0800 225 483.
