Page 4: Southern NH Area Health Education Center · • Describe Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the “spirit” behind it • Describe the four fundamental processes of Motivational

Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based practice, person-centered

style of communication. It is a process that supports positive health behavior

changes through a collaborative interaction that strengthens a person’s own

motivation for change, rather than imposing externally driven changes. The

guiding style of having a Motivational Interviewing conversation helps clients

recognize their own needs and wellness interests and what steps they would

like to take to achieve them.

Target AudienceSchool nurses, nurses, nurse practitioners, pediatricians, family practice physicians, physician assistants, nurse educators, medical assistants, and behavioral health professionals.

Learning ObjectivesAfter this session, participants will be able to:

• Describe Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the “spirit” behind it

• Describe the four fundamental processes of Motivational Interviewing.

• Discuss the listening skills used in MI to guide conversation about

behavioral change.

• Practice reflective listening including OARS Client-Centered Listening

Skills.
