COURSE SYLLABUS – FALL 2014

IST 370-940 – Intro to Oracle SQL

Syllabus Available in the Getting Started folder in Desire2Learn (D2L) FACULTY: Nancy L. Martin, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Information Systems Technologies School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies College of Applied Sciences and Arts Mail Code 6614 Southern Illinois University Carbondale, IL 62901-6614 Office: (618) 453-8838 Email: [email protected]

FACULTY CONTACT: Email is the best way to contact me. I am often online throughout the day, in the evenings, and on the weekends. I will do my best to respond to emails within 24 hours during the week and within 48 hours on weekends. For those students who are on campus or in the Carbondale area, my office hours are on Mondays and Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 3:15 – 3:45 p.m. in ASA 101B. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Oracle 11g: SQL by Joan Casteel, Course Technology, ISBN: 978-1-4390-4128-4

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to introduce students to SQL and PL/SQL functions of the Oracle database management system. Students will learn how to create and maintain database objects, and how to store, retrieve and manipulate data. Students will also create PL/SQL blocks of application code that can be shared by multiple forms, reports and data management applications. PREREQUISITES: IST 334 with a grade of C or better COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Write and execute basic and advanced SQL statements 2. Insert, update, and delete records in a table. 3. Add, drop, alter, rename, and truncate tables. 4. Create and maintain views, sequences, and indexes. 5. Control user access through the use of roles and privileges.

ATTENDANCE: This is an online course and as such there is no grade component for class attendance. The student is responsible for submitting all course deliverables stated in this syllabus by the due dates assigned. DESIRE-2-LEARN (D2l) ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEM: Because this is an online only class, all course material will be delivered via D2L at the website: https://online.siu.edu/. Course expectations are listed in the course syllabus which is available in the D2L course IST 370-940. Due dates are outlined in each module and appear in the respective category, e.g. Dropbox for assignments, Quizzes for exams. Students must access the D2L course often to insure due dates are met.

MANNER OF INSTRUCTION: This 16 week course is divided into 12 modules which are not necessarily contained in one week each. For each module, I will provide introductory notes outlining the content for that module and related reading and assignments. There are two grading components for the course: exams and lab assignments. A Course Schedule & Checklist are provided in D2L. Our week will run from Monday through Sunday. Students must take the Syllabus Quiz to release the first module. All, or most, modules will be available early in the course. Students may work ahead if desired; however once dues dates pass, no late submissions will be accepted. Additionally, exams will only be administered during the scheduled days/times. Readings/Practice: In each module, the chapter is assigned for reading and chapter slides are provided to serve as a high level summary. I strongly encourage students to actually work through the book examples before attempting the lab assignments. This is a fast-paced technical course and diligent practice is crucial to master the skills covered. Assignments: Most chapters will have a lab assignment, 12 in all. Some of the lab assignments are broken into subsections resulting in a total of 16 lab submissions. The lab assignments are always due on Sunday nights by midnight. Exams: There will be a total of four exams. Exams 1, 2, and 3 cover chapter material as outlined in the schedule. The fourth exam, the final, is comprehensive and will be administered during finals week. Exams will consist of multiple choice, true/false questions, and short answer or code-writing questions. Exams will be open over several days as outlined in the Course Schedule & Checklist available on D2L. Exams are open book/open notes and do not require a proctor. Exams are timed so it is important to study and prepare ahead of time as there is not sufficient time allowed to look up answers. Discussions: There are no required discussions for the course. However, please take time to introduce yourself to the rest of the class in the Introductions discussion forum for 5 bonus points to start the semester! There is also a Question/Answer Related to Labs/Course Work discussion board where students are encouraged to post questions, problems, or other difficulties experienced with assignments or anything else in the course. Students are also encouraged to post tips or responses to other students. Publicly posting discussions about issues with assignments or other technical problems will be helpful to all students in the course. Also, if a student initially identifies a problem and posts a fix, the entire class can benefit. Bonus points may be assigned to students for particularly helpful/attentive posts or responses. There is also a General Discussion/Questions forum for anything that does not fit in the other discussions. GRADING/EVALUATION:

GRADE COMPONENT POINTS % OF TOTAL

Assignments (16 @ 25 pts) 400 47%

Exams (3 @ 100 pts) 300 35%

Final Exam 150 18%

Total Points 850

Letter Grading Scale (based on points): A = 750-675 B = 674-600 C = 599-525 D = 524-450 F = less than 450

a. Deliverables (assignments, exams) must be submitted on or before the due date. NO EXCEPTIONS!

c. Exams must be completed within the window provided. If, for any reason, the student has a conflict that prohibits the completion of the exam during the open window, the instructor must be contacted immediately via email.

student and processed by the University. For the proper procedures to follow

when dropping courses and when withdrawing from the University, please visit

http://registrar.siu.edu/pdf/ugradcatalog1314.pdf

INCOMPLETE POLICY~ Undergraduate only

An INC is assigned when, for reasons beyond their control, students engaged in

passing work are unable to complete all class assignments. An INC must be

changed to a completed grade within one semester following the term in which

the course was taken, or graduation, whichever occurs first. Should the student

fail to complete the course within the time period designated, that is, by no

later than the end of the semester following the term in which the course was

taken, or graduation, whichever occurs first, the incomplete will be converted

to a grade of F and the grade will be computed in the student's grade point

average. For more information please visit:

http://registrar.siu.edu/grades/incomplete.html

REPEAT POLICY

An undergraduate student may, for the purpose of raising a grade, enroll in a

course for credit no more than two times (two total enrollments) unless

otherwise noted in the course description. For students receiving a letter grade

of A,B,C,D, or F, the course repetition must occur at Southern Illinois

University Carbondale. Only the most recent (last) grade will be calculated in

the overall GPA and count toward hours earned. See full policy at

Disability Accommodation Agreements.
