PERI DUO makes it’s South African debutNsikasi and Nyongane Waste Water Treatment Facility, Mpumalanga

Maxi Beton civil engineering contrac-tors, who specialise in reinforced con-crete works like water and sewagetreatment works, recently became thefirst client in South Africa to purchaseand use the PERI DUO lightweightformwork system.

They have since been using DUO at theR40 million Nsikasi water treatmentworks in Nelspruit, as well as the R15 million Nyongane waste watertreatment works in Hoedspruit. Theyare using the DUO in combination withPERI MULTIFLEX for the slabs.

DUO’s extremely lightweight panelsand minimal components make forsuch quick and simple assembly anddisasambly of formwork, that no craneis needed on site. In fact, Almost all op-erations with DUO can be carried outwithout tools, and the working stepsare easy to understand.

Waters Edge, a new high-rise residen-tial development of 144 apartments, overlooking the Intaka Island wetlandsreserve and surrounding waterways, isbeing built on the banks of a canal at acost of R350 million. The building, which backs onto Canal Walk shoppingcentre, will also offer basement parkingwith direct access to the apartmentsvia two lift lobbies. Completion isscheduled for late-2017.

Designed by Munnik Visser Architects, the eight-storey building is built on aplinth, which elevates the height of thestructure by two floors and allows forpedestrian movement and landscapingof the ground level plaza. PERI areworking with Rabie Property Group,Group Five Coastal and BC Scaffoldingto create ideal solutions for these spe-cial architectural features.

The columns on which the building isperched were inspired by the man-made heronries in Intaka Island, whilethe sculptured building form is shapedby the contours of the canal. Alreadycompleted are three types of W-shapedcolumns, and one V-shaped column. The W-columns, the highest of which isalmost 10 m high, were made by liningPERI TRIO with the W-column shapecnc, cut out of plywood. Steel box-outspushed out against the ply, and wereconnected with push-pull props.

Other PERI formwork in use at WatersEdge includes SKYDECK for deckingand soffits; MULTIPROPS for doublevolume support under the SKYDECK; QUICKSTAGE for support of triple vol-ume transfer beams; DOMINO forshafts and VARIO to shaft circularareas.

Bruce Lorimer, Owner, BC Scaffolding:“Excellent product with great support."

Custom solutions for a complex bridgewidening projectFlanders Road Bridge, Mount Edgecombe, Durban

Fountain Civil Engineeringwill complete the wideningof the existing Flanders RoadBridge, at Mount Edge-combe, Durban in April 2017.

The project will allow for ex-pected traffic flow for thenew Cornubia shopping cen-tre. The bridge will bewidened from two lanes tofour lanes, with major on

and off ramps. For this pro-ject, PERI has provided solu-tions for the triangularbox-out in the centre of the 8 m high pier, as well as thesloping sections around thepier. Special wedges weremanufactured using VARIOto create the slope.

For the 7 m high abutments, one set of PERI TRIO was

initially cycled from abut-ment to abutment. How-ever, once the first lift wascast, another set of TRIOwas brought to site, so thateach abutment and the piernow have their own equip-ment, saving a lot of time.

Since the project is takingplace on a busy strech ofroad, 13 m long I-beams are

being used to keep thethree-lane traffic access onboth sides of the roadbelow.

PERI is also managing thedelivery of equipment care-fully, as to not clutter thesite, particularly with thestaging for the deck supportfor the 1,200 m deep bridgedeck.

Philani Mkhize, Site Agent, Fountain Civil Engineering:“PERI plays a very important role inthe formwork industry. They pro-vide us with good advice and ser-vice while the concrete results fromtheir products are fantastic.”

PERI's design capabilities were put tothe test for this sculptural concrete andglass wedding chapel. The intricate roofis 20 m long, 12 m wide and 6 m highat the top apex. The PERI team usedAutodesk Inventor to design a total of584 custom trusses. The roof was di-vided into eight sections, four of whichare identical and the other four a mirrorimage.

The trusses were designed for one sec-tion only, and were divided into bottom(trusses A), centre (trusses B) and top(trusses C). The platforms to supporttrusses B and C were drawn in Auto-CAD 3D because of the different found-ing heights and to avoid the MRKframes clashing.

Most of the trusses were vertical, butin some places the direction of thetrusses had to be changed for morecontinuous flow in this complex shape. The VARIO team tweaked the trussesusing X-Y coordinates to ensure that

the curves were completely accurate. Before proceeding, PERI constructed a1:2 sample at their Cape Townpremises. The client, architect, engi-neer and the whole Bosjes projectteam were involved. This showed thatGunite was inadequate, and Shotcretewas used instead – proving that con-crete demo samples are extremely im-portant, especially for complexformwork projects.

The construction sequence was noteasy, and the full project team was in-volved throughout the process. Therewas no crane on site and all formwork,

including the timber trusses, wereplaced by hand. Shoring towers andplatforms were erected and set-outpoints and levels plumbed andchecked. The trusses were placedfrom below and above. Thirty eightmm timber battens, soaked in water tomake bending possible, were fixedonto the trusses horizontally, with twolayers of Shutterply ensuring a smoothfinish.

Despite the challenges of this intricateproject, exasperated by inclementweather, the result is a triumph of de-sign and ingenuity.

John Hartnick, Foreman:“PERI was the only formwork supplier that was manenough to price this project. From designing and 3Dformwork modeling, to site support and technical know-how, their service was excellent. We will gladly partnerwith them again on future projects like this - it can bedone.”

Mike Buyskes Construction used a vari-ety of PERI formwork products for con-struction of the Alex Mall. Work on themassive new mall, situated on the N3in Alexandra, Johannesburg, com-menced in October 2015.

The mall, an initiative by the GreaterAlexandra Chamber of Commerce, in-cludes five entrances, extensive taxirank facilities and ample parking, twoflood-lit mini-soccer courts surroundinga 250-seater feature restaurant and achildren’s play area.

For the 1,100 m2 retaining walls, PERIprovided DOMINO panel formwork,

and for the 16,000 m2 of slab coffersand flat slabs, they provided a solutionusing MULTIFLEX girder slab formworkand PERI table forms.

The 15 m2 table formwork was espe-cially effective when decking the poursizes of approximately 1 200 m2 at 6 mpropping heights. Mike Buyskes cameup with a solution – a scissor jack withoperator and four men hook and un-hooking the 625 Multiprops – resultedin significant savings of time and labour.

The first phase of the mall will provideover 30,000 m2 of retail space for thesurrounding community.

Corné Lees, Project Manager,Mike Buyskes Construction:“Our experience with PERIhas been problem-free.”

Major road upgrade in Western Cape N7 National Road, Malmesbury

Stefanutti Stocks Civils and the SouthAfrican National Road Agency SOCLimited (SANRAL) have contractedPERI Cape Town to provide formworksolutions for an upgrade to the NationalRoad 7 (N7).

The upgrade stretches from just northof the Abbotsdale intersection toVoortrekker road, Malmesbury, and in-cludes the Darling road interchange. This is necessary to increase capacityand improve safety levels of this sec-tion of the N7. This will be achieved by

upgrading the road from a single to adual carriageway freeway, tying into theexisting dual carriageway section begin-ning south of the Darling road inter-change. Pedestrian movement acrossand along the N7 in the vicinity ofMalmesbury has been identified as asafety concern to be considered as partof the upgrade.

PERI systems in use include DOMINOfor the retaining walls and VARIO forspecial trusses and troughs. Comple-tion is set for November 2017.

Elegantly engineered solution for anarchitectural featureSasol Head Office Bridge, Sandton, Gauteng

ContractorAveng Grinaker–LTAField ServicePERI Midrand

20

The unique architectural shape of thenew Sasol Head Office building inSandton made for interesting and chal-lenging solutions throughout the con-struction of the project. One of theseincluded the roof slab – a 15 m span

with variously sized downstand and up-stand beams, connecting two sectionsof the building and allowing for the fea-ture inclined glass façade to join intothis roof slab from below.

Initially, Aveng Grinaker LTA considered45 m-high shoring of the entire bridgefrom the ground floor to the roof slab. This would require tiebacks into theslabs on each side of the building andadditional lateral stability. This solutionwas not possible, as it interfered withthe façade installation and programme;the metric volume of shoring requiredwas estimated at 9,500 m3. The cost, transport and assembly time were de-ciding factors.

PERI proposed the solution of creatinga false soffit at 40 m height, usingsteel beams to span the building. An-other 5 m of shoring could be safely in-stalled from the false soffit. Thissolution had no impact on the façade

or programme and the volume of ma-terial required was significantly less. Itproved to be an elegantly engineeredsolution, which was simple to erectand dismantle.

PERI used their HDT primary beamwith inclined HD200 props, whichwere assembled as individual framesand lifted into position. Pre-manufac-tured 533 I-beam units were lifted intoposition on top of the spreader beamand fixed into position. MULTIPROPMP350 and MP250 towers were as-sembled and installed from the I-beamunits, with MRK frames, used as work-ing platforms to safely assemble theslab and beam soffits. PERI GT24 gird-ers were used for the slab soffit anddownstand beam sides.

Stripping of the systems was done inreverse, and the speed and safety ofthe erection and dismantling at the 40 m height made it very successful.

Timothy Rowbottom, ContractsManager:“PERI effectively addressed the is-sues of time, quality and cost. Theirsystems are extremely versatile andcan be adapted to accommodate justabout any decking issue.”
