Hanukkah: Beyond the Miracles - Challenges of Assimilation

When we think of Hanukkah, we may think of the stories of the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greeks, the desecration and the rededication of the Temple, the miracle of one-day’s oil burning in the ner tamid for eight days. We may think of our family celebrations: lighting the candles in the Hanukkah menorah, playing dreidel games with chocolate gelt, eating latkes or sufganiyot (jelly donuts) and opening presents.

But Hanukkah is also about the lure of assimilation and about being different from the majority and popular culture. The Jews in our Hanukkah story were attracted to the ways of the Greeks and the battles were also ones within the community about how much (or how little) to adopt Hellenistic culture.

Patti Goldin, creator of the “Holiday Workshop Series,” tells the following story about her daughter: One year at Passover, her daughter came home from college and shared the results of a dorm “bull session.” Trying to figure out why she hadn’t turned to drinking, drugs, or carefree sex as had a number of those with whom she grew up, she had come up with only one answer, Hanukkah. learned it was OK to be different. I didn’t have to do everything that everyone else did.”

At this time of the year, with the onslaught of Christmas celebrations and decorations, Jewish children (and adults) feel different. Every Jewish child’s sense of isolation during the winter season is an innate understanding of one of Hanukkah’s deeper meanings: the celebration of being different.

How do we help our children through this maze? Research tells us that the strongest ways to reinforce our children’s Jewish identities include participation in Jewish Youth Groups, Jewish overnight camping, and trips to Israel.

Youth Group: We have a small but enthusiastic NFTY (National Federation of Temple Youth) group for our teens. Contact the Board president at [email protected]

Jewish Camping: Jewish Summer Camps offer young people the unique experience of a totally Jewish community, living out Jewish values and culture in an exciting camp setting. The URJ’s 16 camps offer a variety of camping experiences for our children. Contact: www.urjyouth.org.

Our closest URJ camps (for grades 3-12) are: Goldman Union Camp (GUCI) in Zionsville, IN, and Olin-Sang-Ruby Institute (OSRUI) in Oconomowoc, WI.

Specialty Camps: Teen Leadership Academy at Kutz Camp in Warwick, NY (grades 10-12) includes choices of a “major” such as Creative Arts, Song-Leading, Social Action, Mitzvah Corps, Leadership, Jewish Studies, and a Hebrew language & Israel Culture Ulpan; 6-Points Sports Academy (grades 4-11) in Greensboro, NC; and the 6-Points Science & Technology Academy in Byfield, MA (grades 5-10).

Special Needs Camps: Gibush at Kutz Camp for 13-19 year old teens on the Autism spectrum.

Other Jewish Camps: Herzl Camp (an independent, pluralistic camp) in Webster, Wisconsin; Maurice B. Shwayder Camp (operated by URJ Temple Emanuel of Denver) in the Colorado Rockies; and Camp Sabra (operated by the St Louis Jewish Community Center) in the Missouri Ozarks.

Youth Trips to Israel: The URJ offers a variety of trips to Israel for teens

through NFTY, including the NFTY-EIE High School Semester in Israel Program. Contact: www.nftyisrael.org.

Taglit-Birthright Israel offers FREE ten-day trips to Israel for 18-26 year olds who have never been to Israel before. Contact: www.gokesher.org.

I hope you’ll consider one (or more) of these or similar options for your child or grandchild.

Interested in visiting Israel this summer?

Israel is turning 70 in 2018 and a tour of Israel is being planned via Tifereth Israel for members of the Lincoln Jewish community, their friends, and family members for June 4-14. Nancy Coren is working with Kenes-Tours of Tel Aviv to provide tour members this life-changing experience. Individuals who would like to see the itinerary and learn more about this multi-generational tour should contact Nancy at [email protected]

Although the registration period with a deposit due concludes at the end of December, it is important to reserve your space now. We have already “tacked down” our rooms because of the high interest during the 70th anniversary celebrations.

South Street Temple is partnering with "We Can Do This" to provide weekend meals to

the children of the F Street Community Center.

The neighborhood surrounding the F Street Community Center is designated as an “extreme poverty area” by the U.S. Census Bureau. While the Center provides evening meals during the school week, it does not have the budget to serve anything to eat on weekends, leaving some children with little or no food during the day.

Join us as we provide lunch on the third Sunday of every month. Food/monetary donations, meal preparation and assistance with setting up, serving, and clean-up are needed!

We will serve our next meal on December 17th at 2:30 pm

We are looking for a volunteer to help Aimee Hyten coordinate this project: For more information, email Sarah Beringer at [email protected]..

A Note from the Chesed (Caring) Branch…

Our Temple community could use some volunteers to provide transportation to and from doctor’s appointments for those who either cannot drive or who take medications

that prohibit driving. We are also looking for volunteers able to do light housekeeping or who would be willing to

stay with a family member so that caregivers can go shopping, and run other errands for themselves.

If you are able to help, please contact: Vicki Edwards, Chesed Branch Head at

A message from your Board President…

As we make the transition from November to December and our minds turn from Turkey to Latkes, your Board of Trustees is hard at work transitioning our committee structure. At the annual meeting on November 5th, I presented my vision for restructuring the Temple’s 19 committees into 7 branches. This vision, drawn from the symbology of the menorah, organizes the engaged members of the congregation and provides for opportunities to organize policies and administrative functions to help our community grow stronger. At the last Board Meeting, held on November 19th, we elected the executive committee (the Vav branch) and also assigned board members to lead each branch. If they have not done so already, each branch leader will soon reach out to those of you who have been identified as having interest in each branch. If you have not received such an email yet, please reach out to the board member assigned to the branch in which you have interest. If you have any questions about the branch structure itself, please send me an email directly at [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support of this community and I hope that you find at least one branch in which you can find a home at the South Street Temple.

Vad Branch (Administration) - This branch is your executive committee. It includes the President Nathaniel Kaup, Vice President Jon Mosow, Treasurer Leslie Delserone, and Secretary Julie Moore. The Vad branch is responsible for setting the board agenda, running meetings, creating and presenting reports, developing and maintaining policies and procedures.

Yesod Branch (Foundation) - This branch works closely with Rabbi Appleby to provide meaningful educational content for our members. The Yesod branch is led by Art Ziegelbaum and includes the coordination of life cycle events, adult education, the youth group, and the Lincoln Jewish Community School.

Julie Moore is interested in starting a Ben Franklin Circle and is seeking members…

And what, you ask, is a Ben Franklin Circle? You can visit the Ben Franklin Circles page to find out.! If you are interested in joining this non-secular group, please e-mail Julie at [email protected]. The initial meeting will be to discuss the purpose of the group and to set future meeting dates.

President’s Message continued from page 7

Gevurah (Sustainability) - This branch is concerned with ensuring a financially secure future for our community and works closely with those involved in our finances and helps our members understand their financial responsibilities to the community. The Gevurah branch is led by Dottie Shapiro and includes the Endowment, budgeting and solvency planning, determining membership status in regards to dues pledges and payments, and the capital campaign. The Treasurer is also a part of this branch.

Ruach (Spirit) - This branch works closely with Rabbi Appleby to provide our members and visitors to the South Street Temple with a meaningful and spirited service. It also builds connections with other faith communities in the surrounding area. The Rauch branch is led by Elaine Monnier and includes music, pulpit, and interfaith activities.

Hod (Communication) - This branch is concerned with helping members stay informed and broadcasting important information to the larger community. The Hod branch is led by Alex Clark and includes newsletters, technology, our online presence, and the Jewish Press. The Secretary is also a part of this branch.

Chesed (Caring) - This branch provides care and outreach to our members and engages our members

in acts of loving-kindness. The Chesed branch is led

by Vicki Edwards and includes caring and outreach, social action, working with new, returning, and exiting members, and the gift shop.

Netzach (Events) - This branch provides meaningful events for our members to engage with each other. The Netzach branch is led by Aimee Hyten, and includes all of our major events, such as Purim, Passover, High Holy Days, Break the Fast, Sukkot, and Hanukkah. It also includes Onegs and the programming created for our Young Jewish Lincoln.

Malchut (Building) - This branch helps ensure our members will continue to have a functional building to meet in and that this building continues to stay just as beautiful as it was over 90 years ago. The Malkut branch is led by Dan Senft and includes the maintenance and upkeep of our building, as well as

the groundskeeping and lawn care.
