The Judge Karen J. Williams Courtroom is a functioning courtroom that is used for mock trial and moot court competitions, as well as actual court hearings.
Group study rooms throughout the building are equipped with technology and feature dry-erase walls.
The University of South Carolina School of Law is located at the heart of the state capital and anchors Columbia’s legal corridor, where legal education, government, and private practice converge. Having recently celebrated its 150th anniversary, the school has shaped the careers of generations of attorneys, and our alumni network extends across the nation and the world. Now in a brand new building, South Carolina Law will shape the next generation through its experiential learning opportunities, state-of-the-art technology, and faculty-led research in emerging areas of law.
Statistics cited in this publication are for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Preparation for Practice
UNIFORM BAR EXAMINATION More than two-thirds
of states in the U.S., including South Carolina, have
adopted the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE). The UBE
is a uniformly administered and graded bar examination
with a portable score that can be used to apply for
bar admission in other participating UBE states or
jurisdictions. The UBE is designed to test knowledge and
skills that every lawyer should be able to demonstrate
prior to becoming licensed to practice law. For more
information about bar examinations, visit the National
Conference of Bar Examiners’ website or contact the bar
admission agency in the state where you expect
to practice.

USC and Columbia
While Columbia is one
of the largest cities in
South Carolina, it is still
small enough to feel
like home. Our location
in the state capital is
an asset regardless of
the area of law you choose. The School of Law anchors
Columbia’s legal corridor and is located just steps from
the Statehouse, the South Carolina Supreme Court, the
S.C. Court of Appeals, the National Advocacy Center, and
law firms large and small.
Columbia is rapidly growing into a regional hub for
corporate relocation, college and professional school
students, and tourism. The city has a relaxed, friendly,
genuine feel that lacks pretense. Areas like the Vista,
Five Points, and Main Street all border campus and
provide shopping and entertainment, while close-by lakes,
rivers, and parks provide recreational activities to keep
you grounded. Nearby attractions include the Congaree
National Park, the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden,
and Lake Murray.
THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA IS THE
PALMETTO STATE’S FLAGSHIP UNIVERSITY.
The University of South Carolina attracts and retains
students from all over the country and the world. The
USC system educates more South Carolinians than
any other institution in the state. The vibrant university
community includes just over 34,000 students who hail
from all 50 states and more than 100 foreign countries
and are enrolled in highly-regarded undergraduate,
honors, graduate, and professional programs. USC is
one of only 32 public universities to earn the Carnegie
Foundation’s top-tier designation for research activity
and community engagement, reflecting its dedication to
academic excellence.
The Coleman Karesh Reading Room is a place for quiet, focused study inside the law library.
