South Side Weekly is a nonprofit newsprint magazine written for and about neighborhoods on the South Side of Chicago.Every issue features in-depth arts coverage and original reporting written in a creative narrative style and framed by illuminating photography, rich artwork, and bold design.The paper’s mission is twofold: to document, amplify, and celebrate the cultural richness of the South Side, and to spark critical public dialogue around the issues that are shaping its future.

PUBLISHING CALENDAR

We publish weekly editions during fall, winter, and spring, with breaks in December and April. In the summer ( June through September) we publish monthly. Issues are distributed on Tuesday and dated for Wednesday.

Reservations are due one week in advance of our Wednesday press date, and art files must be received by the Friday before the issue comes out, five days before press date. Files should be sent in PDF format to [email protected]

Special issues, marked with a red circle on the above calendar, come out six times a year. Special issues are designed for a long shelf life, and are printed in full color. Most are printed as bound booklets. See page 5 for more information.

September 23rd: The Best of the South SideThe name says it all. Guest editors from neighborhoods across the South Side curate local highlights, from paletas, smoked fish, and barbecue to blues clubs, bookstores, and monasteries. This is our biggest and most popular issue of the year.

December 2nd: The Holiday Gift GuidFeaturing profiles, stories, and a directory of local businesses, our holiday issue is designed to help readers find unique giftsfrom around the neighborhoods.

March 9th: The Spring Arts GuideOur post-thaw preview of all things artistic, including theater performances, gallery openings, and concerts. The Arts Guide also features a gallery-in-print: a full section turned over to local artists, where each page becomes the canvas for a piece of original artwork.

April 6th: The Food IssueA spin on the usual food issue, the Community Cookbook puts traditional restaurant reviews alongside interviews with chefs and tastemakers, and original recipes that readers can make at home. This issue is designed to be kept in kitchens all year round.

June 1st: The Summer GuideA look forward to the summer ahead plus an extended calendar previewing festivals, concerts, and the other celebrations we wait for all winter long.

July 6th: The Comics IssueSouth Side stories told frame by frame. Established illustrators and up-and-coming artists trade off pages in an issue that blends both journalistic and fictional comics.

August 3rd: The Lit IssueFiction, poetry, essays, and memoir selected from public submissions come together in a literary portrait from, for, and about the neighborhoods we love.

These themed special editions are printed as full color booklets and are designed to be kept by our readers all year. Advertising prices are the same.

GRAPHIC DESIGNWe can design your ad. Our illustrators and graphic designers turn out rich images for our issues, and they can do the same for your business. Our services are reasonably priced, and once the ad runs it’s yours to keep—for future promotions in our pages or anywhere else.

STREET TEAM & DISTRIBUTIONWe can help you get the word out. Our delivery team criss-crosses the city from downtown to the far South Side every week, and they know from experience which locations will reach your audience. Give us a call and we can design a custom route to distribute your flyer, poster, or postcards.

INSERTSWe can insert your flyer, brochure, postcard, or program. Inserting materials costs a flat fee of $600.

PRINTINGWe’d be happy to handle printing for your marketing campaign. We can work with you from concept to delivery, saving you the trouble of working with multiple vendors and coordinating delivery and payment.

Files should be sent as PDFs to [email protected]. Payment is due by the submission deadline unless otherwise agreed to in writing by South Side Weekly. Once you’ve reserved an ad, we’ll send you an e-mail invoice payable by check or any major credit card. Checks should be made payable to South Side Weekly. The mailing address for checks is:

South Side Weekly reserves the right to change the information set forth in the South Side Weekly 2014-15 Media Kit at any time and for any reason without giving notice. South Side Weekly also reserves the right to introduce and sell advertising packages at special rates not listed in this media kit, and to change the definitions of “education” and “locally owned” used in determining appropriate discounts, for any reason and without giving notice. Advertisers are hereby notified that the purchase of advertising space in South Side Weekly is a commercial activity and that payments made to South Side Weekly for advertising space shall under no circumstances be considered a tax-deductible donation to South Side Weekly.

By advertising, the advertiser and/or ad agency agree jointly and severally to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless South Side Weekly from all claims, losses, damages, liabilities, and/or expenses related to the publication of an advertisement, including, but not limited to, infringement of trademarks and copyright, unfair trade practice, and claims of libel.

All requests for modification to a previously ordered advertisement must be made in writing. South Side Weekly is not responsible for errors resulting from verbal requests for modification of advertisements. South Side Weekly will not be liable for any changes or errors made in advertisements that do not substantially decrease the value of said advertisements. Any payments made by South Side Weekly in compensation for any problem arising from the publication of an advertisement will not exceed the original cost of that advertisement.

Payment for advertisements is due in advance of their release in print or online unless credit arrangements are agreed to in writing by the advertiser and South Side Weekly. In the event that credit is extended, South Side Weekly reserves the right to charge a late fee of 20% of the outstanding balance every thirty days beginning the day after the due date. Advertisers are hereby notified that failure to pay outstanding debts may result in legal action in small claims court. South Side Weekly also reserves the right to charge a $25 fee for any check returned by the bank. Advertisements canceled after the Friday deadline for material submission may be charged equal to the full price of the advertisement. In the event that a refund is given for a payment already made, a service charge of $30 may be deducted from the amount refunded.

South Side Weekly reserves the right to refuse any advertising content if they deem it to conflict with their mission as defined in the bylaws of the corporation. South Side Weekly also reserves the right to include the words “paid advertisement” and/or “sponsored content” above, below, or alongside any advertisement in print or online. Placement of print and online ads is at the discretion of South Side Weekly unless a payment has been made by the advertiser to reserve premium placement.

Any legal disagreement arising from this contract will be resolved by the laws and courts governing Cook County in Chicago, Illinois.
