Dear Friends,

It’

anniversaries as the years mount up. This year we commemorate a hundred yearssince the outbreak of World War One. It was to be the war to end all wars but as weknow from our daily news it was not. Thousands of lives were lost as young menfought valiantly for their country. Today, war is very different and even more brutal.Innocent people are used as shields, raped and tortured and millions of people aremade homeless refugees. The so called advances of the human race towards‘ ’, democracy, and equality just do not reach the human heart.

I enjoy watching—people with great skill thrilling andentertaining millions. The Football World Cup tournament, amajor player this year, brings its usual passion with roller

by fear—

from these things, society seems to take an express route to more of the same, onlymore and more brutal. This is what happens when we try to ignore God; our

God is not irrelevant, nor is he ignoring us—he suffered brutality, being a refugee andeverything we experience. God understands and loves us so much he gave us a way tofreedom and peace through Jesus Christ his son. Isn’love?

South Marston Parish CouncilJune Report from Councillor Anne Featherstone

Once described as “ ” the Bodleian book storage facility, situated at KeyPoint, is no ordinary warehouse. Constructed in less than 12 months and chosen from 80possible sites, this computerized and climate controlled building holds books, maps, manuscripts, microfilms, periodicals and newspapers primarily from the 18th century onwardswith some from the 1600s. Impressed? Furthermore, these are not the most precious orfrequently used resources belonging to the Bodleian Libraries ofthe University of Oxford.

The Bodleian Libraries are one of the oldest and most famous

the 14th century. They also hold a copy of every new book

growing at the rate of 1,000 books a day, around 150,000-170,000new items per year.

Completed in October 2010 this £26 million facility is capable of holding 8.4 million volumes

football!) pitches with high density racking providing a shelf surface area equivalent to 16.5pitches. The racking is 11.4m high in aisles 71m long. There are 31 of these aisles totaling3,224 bays with 95,000 different shelf levels to accommodate the different heights of thebooks. There is 2,196 tons of steel and 4550m of safety rail. More than 25,000 nuts andbolts, over 1,000,000 rivets and over 18,000 floor fixings hold things together.

The archived microfilm measures 1600 linear metres. 600 map cabinets hold over 1.2 million

The site, which has room to expand, was chosen because of its easy links with Oxford. Itemsare gathered and transported in large batches along the A420 within hours of beingrequested.

1854 tonnes of top soil have been spread across the site with 730 tonnes added to the mound

autumn and we are promised: 122,000 bulbs, 72 trees and 3535 shrubs.

-Chancellor Professor Andrew Hamilton apologises fordelays in the landscaping works. The Parish Council Environmental Working Group (BarryThunder, Stephanie Blair, Anne Featherstone) is liaising with the university regarding the

impressive gateway to the village.
