Thornton grabs Oregon Open

PGA Professional Brian Thornton(Meridian Valley C.C.) shot a final-

round 7-under-par 65 en route to claimingchampionship honors at the 2012OregonOpen Invitational, held at Broken Top Club.

Thornton fashioned a clean final round, carding seven birdies and no bogeys to finishtwo shots ahead of 2008Oregon Openchampion Corey Prugh (Manito G. & C.C.).

When asked how he felt after his final-round triumph, Thornton replied, “I felt verygood. There were so many great players. Tobe mentioned as a winner alongside some ofthe other tournament winners is a real honor. There have been some legends of the gamewho have won this tournament and it feelsgood to be a part of that history.”

Scoring conditions were evident early inthe final round. After just sneaking by thecut, and playing in the first group of theday, PGA Professional Chris Van der Velde(Tetherow G.C.) carded a 9-under-par 63 topropel himself up to a T-11 finish. With theround, Van der Velde set a new Broken Topscoring record, and posted the lowestOregon Open tournament round sincePGA Professional Mike Gove finishedwith a final-round 62 in 1992.

Seven-under for the day and two shotsup coming down the stretch, all Thorntonneeded to do was finish it off. “I did peekat the scoreboard after 16 and saw that Ihad a two shot lead. I played some great

course management after that and also hitsome quality shots to make par knowingPrugh needed to make something happento catch me.”

With the victory, Thornton is just onewin away from the career grand slam atPNW PGA major events. To this,Thornton remarked, “It really never hit methat I was going to have a chance at thatuntil I got this win. I am excited for theopportunity. Golf is very humbling; youjust never know when it may be your turn.”Look for Thornton to be in contention atthe upcoming Rosauers Open Invitational, where he’ll try to complete the slam. —Kyle Neilan

Originally  designed  by  Tom  and  George  Fazio  in  1981  for  major  tournament  play,  The  Champion  Course  at  PGA  NaJonal  has  to  be  one  of  the  most  beauJful  and  certainly  one  of  the  toughest  golf  courses  in  South  Florida.    Just  imagine,  a  track  that  stretches  over  7048  yards  with  a  slope  of  148  and  course  raJng  of  75.2  from  the  Jps.  Thankfully,  PGA  NaJonal  Resort  &  Spa  has  done  a  remarkable  job  throughout  the  years  including  the  addiJon  of  5  sets  of  tees  to  make  it  more  playable  for  the  rest  of  us,  a  couple  of  remodels  (1990  and  2002)  under  the  careful  eye  of  none  other  than  Jack  Nicklaus  and  the  Nicklaus  Design  Team  and  recently  (fall  2012)  the  addiJon  of  new  turf,  bunkers  and  the  reshape  of  green  contours  and  expanded  green  complexes.

The  Champion  Course  at  PGA  NaJonal  is  also  rich  in  tradiJon  having  hosted  some  of  golf's  most  presJgious  tournaments,  including  the   1983   Ryder   Cup,   1987   PGA   Championship,   from   1982-‐2000   Senior   PGA   Championship   and   from   2007   to   present   The   Honda  Classic.  It's  late  January  and  just  weeks  away  from  another  Honda  Classic  and  our  team  finds  this  golf  course  in  prisJne  shape.    The  Champion  Course  boast  generous  fairways  and  spacious  landing  areas  in  most  if  not  all  holes,  very  fast  and  recepJve  TifEagle  greens  and   lots  distracJons  and  challenging  holes   including  The  Bear  Trap,   a   stretch  of  3  holes   (15th   -‐  17th)  where   Jack  Nicklaus  has   re-‐worked  the  earth  to  have  more  water  in  play  and  less  real  estate  to  land  than  any  other  golf  course  I've  ever  played.  The  Bear  Trap  is  today  considered  one  of  Florida's  most  notable  golf  challenges,  on  what  is  unquesJonably  one  of  the  best  golf  courses  in  Florida.    THE  REVIEW  Playing  The  Champion  Course  at  PGA  NaJonal  on  your  next  visit   to  PGA  NaJonal   just  makes  all  sense.  Golf  course  architects  have  added  alternate  sets  of  tee  boxes  to  play  an  array  of  distances  and  slopes  all   the  way  down  to  5145  yards  with  a  slope  of  136  for  ladies  playing  from  the  red  tees.  Follow  the  advice  of  the  knowledgeable  staff  and  play  the  correct  set  of  tees  based  on  your  ability.    The  starter  recommended  our  team  the  Gold  tees  at  6,727  yards,  we  felt  comfortable  with  that  distance  and  yet  challenged  in  several  key  holes

Hole  #6  par-‐5  (488  yards)  -‐  Most  difficult  hole  Why  is  it  that  a  short  par-‐5  measuring  only  488  yards  (from  the  Jps)  the  #1  handicap  hole  in  the  enJre  golf  course?  I  guess  you  have  to  see  it  to  believe  it!  The  #6  hole  at  The  Champion  Course  starts  with  a  narrow  fairway,    (water  tee  to  green)  lej  and  was  designed   in   a  west   to   east   direcJon,   always   against   the  perennial   easterly  winds.   If  you  are  not  careful  these  factors  will  ruin  your  round  of  golf.  I  started  with  my  3-‐wood  carefully  placing  it  to  the  right  side  of  the  fairway,  my  second  shot  was  with  my  hybrid  to  the  100-‐yard  mark,  my  third  shot   landed   in  the  middle  of   the  slopping  green  and  rolled   lej  all   the  way   to   the  edge  of   the  water...   I  walked  out  with  a  7  and   I'm  sJll  scratching  my  head...    I  repeat!  not  paying  abenJon  to  this  hole  can  ruin  your  round.  Hole  #10  Par-‐5  (545  yards)  -‐  One  of  the  easiest  Easy  holes  are  far  and  few  in  between  The  Champion  Course.  On  paper  this  is  the  5th  most  difficult  hole  but   the  wind  will  help  you  score  well.  This  par-‐5  plays  downwind  and   the   ginormous   fairway  will   let   you   squeeze   the   extra   yards   of   your   driver.  My  second  shot  from  190  yards   landed  15  feet   lej  of  the  pin.  Two  pubs  later  and  I  was  feeling  glorious   forge=ng   that   front  nine  41   score.   Take  advantage  of   this  hole  and  aim  to  the  center  of  the  fairway.  With  the  added  win  and  some  extra  roll  you  will  be  in  place  for  a  great  score.  Hole  #15  Par-‐3  (179  yards)  -‐  Enter  the  Bear  trap  The   famous   Bear   Trap   starts  with   a   short   and   very   deceiving   par-‐3.   To   your   right   a  plaque   with   informaJon   about   the   next   3   holes,   and   the   statue   of   a   grizzly   bear.  InJmidaJon   and   distracJon  will  make   you   forget   about   the  wind   you   are   about   to  face.  I  took  2  extra  clubs  and  sJll  came  up  short  but  dry.  My  compadre  did  not  fair  the  same  way.  Key  club  selecJon  and  aim  plays  a  big   factor.  The  hole   faces  east  and   its  tucked   in  a  way  that  you  may  not  be  able  to   feel   the   impact.  Keep  your  head  down  and  take  an  extra  club...  believe  me  you'll  need  it!    The  Champion  Course  at  PGA  NaJonal  is  a  true  gem  in  golf  course  design.  One  of  the  added  features  about  playing  this  course   is  the  fact  that  your  favorite  golfers  on  the  PGA  Tour  walk  the  same  fairways  and  pub  in  these  very  same  greens...  The  beauJful  layout   is   fresh   and   appealing   to   the   eye;   I   feel   is   a   great   combinaJon   of   beauJful  scenery,  natural  wild   life  and  a  mixture  of   immaculate  golf  course  aestheJcs,  always  manicured   to   perfecJon...   just   a   gorgeous   track!   For   more   informaJon   please   visit  hbp://www.pgaresort.com

working together on transportation

plans since the PGA Championship was

awarded to Kiawah Island in 2005. It’s

no small feat getting thousands of spec-

tators, volunteers, staffers and competi-

tors on and off an island each day, but

plans are in place to make the process

smooth for all parties.

A general parking area at the front of

Kiawah Island will accommodate more

than 10,000 cars at a time, and there will

be two bus systems in place for specta-

tors – one internally on the island, and

another to bring spectators in from off

the island.

“We will have a very effective method

to direct people where they should go to

get them in and get them out,” Warren

says. “We have gone through a lot of

planning, we have a great plan and we’ll

execute it. We want the story of this

event to be the great play of the players

and nothing else.”

“The challenges at Kiawah Island will

be the same challenges we face at any

course – moving 30,000-plus people

A  Golf  Escape  to  the  City  that  Never  Sleeps    The  intrinsic  connecJon  between  South  Florida  and  New  York  gets  into  full  swing  later  this  spring  and  summer,  as  snowbirds  make  their  way  back  to  Westchester  County,  Long  Island  and  the  Hamptons.  There’s  no  need,  however,  to  check  world-‐class  golf  at  the  door  on  the  way  out  of  Miami,  Ft.  Lauderdale,  Boca  and  the  Palm  Beaches.  The  Empire  State   is  one  of   the  most  golf-‐rich  states   in   the  U.S.,  as   it   is  home  to  many  of  the  most  storied  venues  in  the  country.        A  new  golf  narraJve  is  being  wriben  just  north  of  the  city,  however,  as  the  Pete  Dye  designed  Pound  Ridge  Golf  Club  has  emerged  as  one  of  the  great  modern  layouts  in  the  Northeast.    Dye  is  known  as  the  “mad  scienJst”  behind  golf  cathedrals  such  as  TPC  Sawgrass  Stadium  Course,  Harbour  Town  Golf  Links,  Whistling  Straits,  and  The  Ocean  Course  at  Kiawah  Island  Golf  Resort.      But  unJl   2008,  Dye  didn’t   have   a   single   layout   in  New  York.   That   changed  when  Ken  Wang,   a  M.I.T.   graduate   and  brother  of   fashion  designer  Vera,  commissioned  Dye  to  create  Pound  Ridge  Golf  Club  an  hour  north  of  Manhaban  in  Westchester  County.  Wang  specifically  sought  out  Dye,  comparing  his  courses  to  “standing  in  the  middle  of  a  giant  math  problem  conjured  up  by  a  master  of  geometry.”

have elevated the state of golf in Indiana.“It greatly benefits the Section to have our offices

here at The Legends. It’s a great location with a lot ofexposure to golfers and the ability to host Sectionevents,” David says. “Ted is so willing to help us inany way, from hosting major events to making sureour junior campers have whatever they need. Hiscooperation has been critical to what we do.”

Taking A Leadership Role

Around the time Bishop started the process ofbuilding The Legends, he also became involved inPGA governance. In 1988, he was named to theIndiana PGA Section board of directors. In 1993,he was elected secretary of the Section, and eventu-ally served a two-year term as Section president in1997-98 – coinciding with being named 1998 Indi-ana PGA Section Golf Professional of the Year.

Bishop thought his time in PGA governance wasfinished when his term as honorary presidentended in 2000, but it was only the beginning of histime on the national stage. Bishop was appointedby PGA Past President Jack Connelly to theNational Membership Committee in 2000, whichled to a spot on the PGA Board of Control from2002–05. At the end of that term, Bishop becamea national director for District 6.

Along the way, Bishop found he enjoyed learn-ing about and working on issues that influenced allPGA members, from education to membershipissues. He also made close friends with PGA Pro-

fessionals from other parts of the country, includ-ing Jim Remy – a fellow Board of Control memberwho was elected PGA Secretary in 2005. Bishopdecided to follow Remy’s lead and run for secretaryin 2006, losing a three-ballot vote to AllenWronowski. Two years later, Bishop ran again andwon, forgoing his last year as District 6 Director tobecome PGA Secretary.

“It was never a lifelong dream of mine to becomePGA President. But the more I learned about theAssociation and the more I got involved, it seemedlike the right thing to do at the right time of mylife,” Bishop says. “I learned a lot going through theelection process twice, and met so many great PGAProfessionals. I learned something every day, everymeeting – and I still am.”

All in the Family

As Bishop’s star has risen on the national stage, TheLegends has become a family operation. CindyBishop left her job as a teacher when the couple’sdaughters were both in college, joining the staff ofThe Legends as food & beverage coordinator. Heryears of hosting elaborate pro-am parties at thefamily home in Linton now help her plan and pro-vide for dozens of yearly events, from golf outingsand league banquets to weddings and parties at thefacility’s clubhouse.

The Bishops’ daughters have both gone on tocareers in golf – one at home and one on the EastCoast – after playing golf collegiately. Ambry, the

To  understand  the  concept  behind  Be=nardi  pubers  and  more  specific  to  understand  the  concept  behind  their  flagship  model  Be_nardi   Signature  Model   5   we  must   first   get   to   know   the  brains  behind  the  operaJon.  Chicago  naJve  Robert  Be=nardi,  CEO   of   Be=nardi   pubers,   carries   on   a   family   tradiJon   of  quality   metal   craj.   His   father,   a   master   miller   as   well,   gave  Robert  his  early  exposure  to  the  field  of  engineering.  From  the  age  of  12  on,  his  summers  were  spent  working   in  his   father's  machining   facility   learning   the   craj   from   the   ground   up.   He  would  go  on  to  receive  his  degree  from  the  Milwaukee  School  of  Engineering  and  would  later  open  his  own  engineering  and  milling  facility,  X-‐Cel  Technologies  in  Tinley  Park,  IL,  producing  parts  for  the  defense  and  medical  industries.   Be=nardi   combined   his   golf   and   crajing   passions   and   began

manufacturing  a  One-‐Piece  Technology  pubers   in   the  early  90's,  and   founded   Be=nardi   Golf   in   1998.   Through   his   dedicaJon   to  precision   and   innovaJon,   the   Be=nardi   name   has   become  synonymous  with  quality  in  the  world  of  golf.  His  objecJve  clear,  Robert  Be=nardi  set  out  in  1991  and  began  crajing  some  of  the  world's  finest  pubers.  Already  a  master  engineer  milling  parts  for  the   defense   and  medical   industries,   his   talents   were   sharp   and  appropriate   to   make   the   move   into   the   world   of   golf.   Ajer  creaJng   some   of   his   own   prototypes,   Be=nardi   was   soon  designing  and  producing  pubers  alongside  some  of  the  industry's  best  and  was  in  demand  by  golf's  top  OEM's.                                    Over   the   next   seven   years   Be=nardi   would   hone   his   skills   and  become  recognized  as   the  premier  engineer  of  One-‐Piece  milled  pubers.  He  was  prepared  and  eager  to  put  his  own  name  on  the  pubers  he  created  and  in  1998  Be=nardi  Golf  was  born.  Some  of  the  original  prototypes  from  that  era  are  among  the  most  sought-‐ajer  by  collectors   today.  His  first  milestone  came   in  1999  when  Jesper  Parnevik  shot  23  under  par  for  a  tournament  record  265  at  the   Greater   Greensboro   Open   using   a   Be=nardi   BB-‐10.   A   few  years   later   with  major   tournament  wins   by   Jim   Furyk   and   Vijay  Singh   would   seal   the   deal:   Be=nardi   was   the   name   in   milled  pubers.   The   Be=nardi   Signature   Series   5   is   a   classic   Be=nardi  puber.   Be=nardi   Signature  Model   5   is   based   off   of   a   BB1   head  with  a  reverse  taper  flow  neck.  Care  and  detail  can  be  seen  and  felt  as  in  this  unique  "in  a  class  of  its  own"  puber.  The  neck  is  very  narrow  and   tapers    wider   into  a  flare  Jp  shaj.  As  you  stand  up  the  neck  hides  away  from  your  eyes....
