SOUTH FLORIDA (4-0) AT SYRACUSE (2-2) NOON, SATURDAY CARRIER DOME TWCS-26 ORANGE INSIDER O n paper, it is a mismatch. South Florida will enter Saturday’s noon game at Syracuse in the Carrier Dome with an unblemished 4-0 record. It has out- scored its opponents 151-27. It is No. 23 in the nation in total offense, averaging 433.8 yards per game. It is No. 11 in total defense, allowing only 242.8 yards per game. It has yet to allow a touchdown pass. “They have great talent, they’re playing with ter- rific effort and it’s a team we haven’t beaten (in the four-game series),” SU coach Doug Marrone said, “so it’s a tremendous challenge for our football team.” It is. But there is one catch. With the exception of last week’s signature upset at Florida State, the Bulls have put together that imposing resume against a cup- cake schedule. While Syracuse (2-2) was testing its mettle against three Big Ten opponents to prepare for the Big East Conference, USF was routing Wofford (40-7), Western Kentucky (35-13) and Charleston Southern (59-0). Wofford and Charleston Southern play in the Football Championship Subdivision (for- merly known as Division I-AA). The schedule begs the question: How good are the Bulls? 2009TEAM STATISTICS

SU’SLEADERS

HOWTHEY STACKUP

Running backsQB B.J. Daniels’ prowess as a runner (6.8 yards per carry) gives USF an element SU lacks. Bulls average 207.2 yards per game rushing.

Receivers USF has a bunch of burners (team averages a lusty14.4 yards per catch), but Mike Williams (28 receptions) gives SU the edge.

Offensive line USF’s line provides foundation for balance (over 200 yards rushing and passing per game). SU’s unit is “work in progress.”

Defensive line USF has best pair of DEs in nation led by All-American George Selvie. SU’s improved unit needs Art Jones to be healthy.

Linebackers USF boasts typical Florida trio: big, strong and extremely fast. This season, SU’s group led by Derrell Smith is in the same boat.

Quarterbacks SU’s Greg Paulus averages 222 yards per game and has a lofty completion percentage of 68.4. USF’s B.J. Daniels is a dangerous runner/passer.

Secondary USF has yet to allow a TD pass this season; SU has allowed 11. USF allows 130.5 passing yards per game; SU allows 310.5.

Special teams USF has been OK in every area but FGs (3-for-8). Despite breakdowns on trick plays last week, SU is solid all-around.
