BC Graduation Program

• Students begin the Grad Program in Grade 10

• Courses are tracked for grades 10-12

• Students must meet ministry course requirements and the 80 credit minimum for graduation.

English 10 Options

• In each of the English 10 cohorts,

students will experience a variety of

media that may include a selection

of novels, short stories, essays, and

drama.

• The Curricular Competencies of

composition, speaking, and listening

are further developed.

• Each of the cohorts will include

elements of spoken language and

First People’s texts, and all of the

cohorts will prepare students fully

for English 11 and English 12.

• Designed for students who are interested in the literature of a variety of eras, geographical areas, or themes, or in the study of literature in general

• Course allows students to explore specific themes, periods, authors or areas of the world through literary works in a variety of media

New Media/Composition

• Designed to reflect the changing role of technology in today’s society and the increasing importance of digital media in communicating and exchanging ideas

• Possible additional focus areas of study include: media and film studies, journalism and publishing, and digital communication

Debate/Composition

• Designed for students who are interested in exploring English through the lens of debate

• In addition to studying the traditional genres of fiction and nonfiction, students will focus on the Spoken Language Core Competencies and apply them in developing argumentation skills

• Emphasis on developing persuasive arguments and additional focus Is given to the verbal presentation of arguments that is central to debate

Pre-AP English

• This course develops reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills by examining a wide range of challenging novels, plays, short stories and poems from across eras and cultures

• Emphasis on in-depth understanding of specific literary genres, writing techniques and the analysis of literature and literary styles

• Students enrolled in this course will move at a faster pace than in a regular English 10 class

• *application required for enrollment into Pre AP English

MATHEMATICS

Apprenticeship and Workplace

Mathematics

• Designed to provide students with the mathematical

understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for

entry into the majority of trades and for direct entry into

the work force.

• This math course does not satisfy university entrance

requirements but does satisfy other post secondary

requirements (college, tech school)

Foundations of Mathematics

• Designed to provide students with the mathematical

understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for

post-secondary studies in programs that do not require

the study of theoretical calculus.

• Does satisfy university entrance requirements for Arts

(must take grade 11 and 12) and other post secondary

requirements (college, tech school)

Pre-calculus/Calculus

• Designed to provide students with the mathematical

understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for

entry into post-secondary programs that do require the

study of theoretical calculus.

• This Math course is required for university Science and

Engineering Programs. It is also a requirement for most

business programs

Language Challenge Exams

• for those students with a background in French, Mandarin, Spanish, Japanese, Punjabi, Korean

• Exam will take place in January

• Exams are free to all students, except International students

*Challenge 11 exams will satisfy the Language 11 requirement for entry into Post-Secondary.

*Challenge 12 exams MAY be used for entrance GPA in some universities.

STRIVE • COHORT 10 – Strive COHORT

• This cohort is designed for students who are interested in

approaching their studies on a different path, and who are capable of

working with others within the school and beyond the classroom walls.

• Teachers will be working together as an inquiry team to make

thematic connections between their subject areas. This grade 10

cohort is designed to improve student understanding and wellness in

school by reconnecting them to their natural communities.

• Working in an English, Math, Physical, Education, and Science

cohort, students explore the environments of South Delta. Cross-

curricular connections will emphasize experiential activities; this will

involve frequent opportunities to explore ideas and curriculum in our

local surroundings.

• $150.00 fee due

• Students may earn credits toward graduation through training programs outside of school. Some examples are:

• Dance (Royal Academy of Dance)

• Music (Royal Conservatory of Music)

• Sports (Provincial or National team level)

• Lifesaving (Bronze Cross, NLS, Instructor)

• Cadets (National Defense Cadet Certification)

• Coaching (Level 1-2, First Aid, 75-150 hours)

• Official (Theory, evaluation, 75-125 hours)

• Driver Ed. (ICBC accredited program)

• First Aid (WCB level II and III)

*students are required to submit documentation as proof of program completion

Choosing courses in Parent and Student Connect

• When choosing your courses you will need to indicate if you would like

a locker next year. We have a shortage of lockers so if you don’t use

one, please don’t select one.

• Students need to be in a minimum of 8 courses during grade 10.

• Career Life Education may be done in class or online. If you select the

online version in PC or SC, it will be with a teacher who works at

SDSS.

• All other online courses are not done through SDSS and students

must register for these separately.

• We are able to see your selections as soon as you hit the SAVE

button.

• There is an application process for Math 10 Challenge and Pre-AP

English 10. You must fill out an application form. These are available

from your Math and English teachers.
