South Dakota Horseshoe Pitchers Association Officers Meeting Minutes

August 29, 2015

Those present were President Kurt Whaley, Tom Dunham, Ron and Rhonda Purkapile, Butch Finton, Carl Chambers, and Carlene Barber.

President Whaley called the meeting to order.

The August 2014 Officer Meeting Minutes were reviewed. It was moved by Butch Finton, seconded by Tom Dunham to approve. Motion carried.

The preliminary treasurer’s report was reviewed. Concern was noted about fund balance. No approval needed at this time.

Committee Reports: Trophy: No need to purchase more trophies this year. Clothing: Nine shirts were purchased – six for juniors and cadets and 3 for door prizes. Hall of Fame: Presentation ready to go. Kyle Stover Memorial: Current balance is $2,327.34. Website: Would like to discuss at business meeting to see what other members want to do with website. This year expenses were high because had to pay for a 3 year service. Normally the cost to keep and maintain the website will be $244 each year. Hall of Fame: Can install a link to them to show the plaque in Chamberlain. Vacancy of Officers: This year need to vote for a 1st Vice President. This position is being vacated by Bryce Chambers and he chose not to run again. In 2016 the positions of 2nd Vice President, State Statistician, and President will be up. If know of anyone who would be interested, contact Carlene Barber by July 2016.

Old Business: None

New Business: - Pierre has state tournament bid for 2016. Pierre is the only place that has a bid for hosting state

tournament in 2017. - World Tournament Presentation for how all the SD pitchers placed will be made at the business meeting.

Tom Dunham reported that it was voted on for tournament classes that are handicapped that alternative pitching is optional and up to tournament directors whether or not the pitchers have to alternate pitches.

- The officers will propose that $50 again be donated to the SD Hall of Fame in Chamberlain since they have our Hall of Fame trophy displayed there.

- President Whaley stated that help will be needed taking pictures of pitchers.

South Dakota Horseshoe Pitchers Association Annual Business Meeting Minutes

Saturday, August 29, 2015

The annual business meeting was called to order by President Kurt Whaley.

It was moved by Carl Chambers, seconded by Cliff Ziehl to approve the August 30, 2014, minutes with a correction to mention that Carlene Barber was inducted into the Horseshoe Hall of Fame in 2014 – which was omitted from the business meeting minutes. Motion carried.

It was moved by Steve Hofland, seconded by Wendi Harris to approve the preliminary treasurer’s report. Motion carried.

There was discussion on whether members would support the raise of sanction fees from $25 to $30. A show of hands by those present would support that, if needed.

Committee Reports: Trophy: There was not a need to purchase more trophies this year. Clothing: Nine shirts were purchased – six for juniors and cadets and 3 for door prizes. President Whaley reminded everyone that you can order apparel from the SDHPA website. Hall of Fame: Presentation is ready to go. Kyle Stover Memorial: Current balance is $2,327.34. President Whaley read the history of the Kyle Stover Memorial and why it was established. Website: A webmaster is needed to put results from tournaments, pictures, schedules, minutes, etc. on the website for everyone to view. Election of Officer: The position of 1st Vice President is up for election. The incumbent, Bryce Chambers, has chosen not to run for another term. No other names were submitted by the July 2015 deadline so President Whaley will be appointing someone to that position. In 2016 three positions will be voted on – President (currently Kurt Whaley), State Statistician (currently Gene Ewing), and 2nd Vice President (currently Butch Finton). All interested parties need to submit names to Carlene Barber by July 1, 2016.

Old Business: NONE

New Business: - The State Tournament Result Flyer that Gene Ewing has done for years will no longer be done by him. A discussion

followed on whether or not members wanted to receive a hard copy of it. It was proposed to still have a State Tournament Result Flyer but to have on our SDHPA website. Members can print it off themselves if they wanted a hard copy. The SDHPA website address is sdhorseshoepitching.com.

- The 2016 State Tournament will be held in Pierre the weekend before Labor Day. - Pierre was the only site to put in a bid for 2017 so they will be hosting the 2017 State Tournament as well.

World Tournament Report: SDHPA had 22 of its members participate in the World Horseshoe Tournament held in Topeka, KS in July 2015. The results are: Cadet E: Morgan Guevara – 2nd Cadet D: Lilly Whaley – 9th and Michael Clemens – 5th Cadet C: Ivis Lee – 8th Junior H: Shyene Clemens – 1st Junior E: Damion White – 1st Women L: Sarah Tarbox – 11th Women J: Wendi Harris – 6th Women D – Carlene Barber – 3rd Senior Men D: Walter Osterberg – 6th and Jim Wike – 3rd Elders L2: Les Lameyer - 5th Elders L1: Will Waddle – 14th Elders K1: Ron Purkapile – 9th Elders J2: Butch Finton – 9th Elders G1: LaVerne Wipf – 8th Elders F2: Carl Chambers – 11th and Vine Marks – 5th Men M2: Arlen Lee – 4th Men J2: Tom Dunham – 16th Men G2: Milton Renville – 1st Men C2: Anthony Tallman – 3rd

Our SDHPA delegate, Tom Dunham, reported on the business meeting at World Tournament. It was approved that it is up to the discretion of tournament directors on whether the handicapped classes alternate pitch or not. Also conditional sanction for full walkways by 2019. Also NHPA is talking about raising their dues because numbers are down there as well. The World Tournament in 2016 will be held in Montgomery, Alabama and in 2017 St. George, Utah.

A question was asked why NHPA figures the average of pitchers on the top3 tournaments instead of all tournaments pitched in. NHPA believes by doing it this way it limits the amount of “sandbagging” that can be done.

NHPA has awarded patches for those pitchers that have participated in at least 10 world tournaments and a patch again for those who have participated in 20 world tournaments by 2014: Clint Bryson – 15 years Tom Dunham – 11 years Gene Ewing – 10 years Berditte (Butch) Finton – 12 years Roland Kleinschmidt – 13 years Vine Marks, Sr. – 22 years (Vine received both a 10 year and 20 year patch) Ed Osterkamp – 16 years (Ed has passed away) Henry Pater – 10 years (Henry has passed away) Milton Renville – 10 years Kent Robinson – 12 years (Kent has passed away) Kurt Whaley – 13 years

A donation to the SD Hall of Fame in Chamberlain for $50 will be sent to them in appreciation for them displaying our SDHPA Hall of Fame trophy.

SDHPA Longevity patches were handed out: 10 Years: John Barber, Billy Markwed, Shane Roach, and Aaron Sestak

20 Years: Les Lameyer

30 Years: Clint Bryson and Roland Kleinschmidt
