2015 SOUTH DAKOTA EXCELLENCE SALE

Sale Committee Comments

The Sale Committee: Don & Peg Zilverberg Jeff Lounsbery Jerry Rausch

Dear Fellow Cattlemen,

What an amazing year we have been blessed with! Good cattle prices and above average moisture in many areas make it an exciting time to be in our industry. The demand for Herefords has never been better. We are seeing a huge demand for both bulls and females.

Whether you have owned Herefords for years or are just getting started, the South Dakota Excellence Sale can offer you many opportunities to compliment your current operation. All the cattle are coming from some of South Dakota’s finest operations. Many of them have a time tested track record of success and the cattle offered in this year’s sale will compete on the local, state, and national levels.

Make plans to attend the Excellence Sale November 14th and evaluate the cattle for yourself. Please contact the consignors or any member of the sale committee with questions. If you are available the night before you are invited to the pre-sale banquet. Enjoy the Certified Hereford Beef prime rib supper and take the time to visit with many of the consignors.

Looking forward to seeing you at the sale!

JOHN LEIBEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPIn 1952, John L. Leibel became the executive director of the South Dakota Hereford Asso-ciation, a position he held for thirty-three years. In that capacity, John was a true industry leader, devoting himself to the South Dakota Hereford Association membership, and to the improvement of the Hereford breed. Better than most, John understood the impor-tance of providing support and educational opportunities for the next generation of lead-ers. Through his efforts, the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association became the strong association which exists today.

John Leibel passed away in 2003, but with the help of the Leibel family, John’s legacy lives on in the South Dakota Junior Hereford Achievement Program, which was established to provide scholarship and educational support for young people interested in a career in agriculture and Hereford cattle. The John Leibel Memorial Scholarship is specifically intended to provide financial assistance to those South Dakota students who have long-term career interests in agriculture.

Eligibility: The John Leibel Memorial Scholarship is limited to post-secondary students who are, or have been, members of the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association. There is no requirement that the student be attending a South Dakota college/university/vocational school. The scholarship recipient will receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship, to be used at the post-secondary educational institution of his/her choice.

Scholarship applications can be accessed on the South Dakota Hereford Association web-site at www.southdakotaherefords.org. Applications are due August 1 of each year.

The 2015 John Leibel Memorial Scholarship recipient is Eric Tesch.Ever since I was a young beginner calf showman, my dad, Phil, raised me up with Here-ford cattle. I recall attending the Hereford Banquet each year starting at a young age. Many of my show calves were purchased through the Excellence Sale and I have ac-quired much success, having two steers that were reserve champion in the carcass contest and also winning showmanship at the Junior Show in 2009. Volunteering at the food booth at DakotaFest has prevailed as my favorite experience each year. I have oc-cupied many different jobs each year, but the people I meet and work beside is the key to what makes DakotaFest special.

I am currently in my junior year of college at South Dakota State University studying Ani-mal Science. I am specializing in Business Production with a minor in Agricultural Busi-ness. My biggest accomplishment at college has been joining FarmHouse Fraternity, which has propelled me to do things I never thought possible.

I aspire to raise Hereford cattle on my own farm someday, but for now I continue to help out at the family farm in Goodwin, SD, even though I will find a different job in the field of agriculture after I am done with school. I would like to thank my dad, Phil, and my moth-er, Lynne, for their support in everything I do, as well as Frank Redlin for being around to help with whatever I may need. I also would especially like to thank the Hereford Associa-tion for selecting me as the John Leibel Memorial Scholarship recipient. I look forward to serving on the Junior Board this year and being as involved as possible in the future!

Winner of the John Leibel Memorial Scholarship was Eric Tesch. SDHA man-ager Phil Eggers presented the award at the State Fair.
