Last month was another busy month, and believe it or not, this month will be extremely busy.

We started off the month with our Chapter Gathering, and this month, we did a breakfast

meeting at Ryan’s. We had a fairly good turnout with 28 people. Food was good, and we had a

lot of laughs. Chapter R (Orangeburg) even came to visit… of course, bearing gifts. Wade

presented us the infamous Hot Potato. Thanks Wade. Afterwards, we took a ride down for the

Blessing of the Bikes. Then we were off to our Saturday activities, because of the high wind

gusts.

We had a Meet to Eat that was not very well attended, but thanks to two couples who kept the

spirit. Then we zoomed off to Daylight Savings Time. Have you recovered yet? It is still messing

with me. But, we had a good turnout for our Team Meeting so if you do things later in the day,

people are more apt to survive the change.

Then I was off to teach a TRC (Trike Riders Course) in Myrtle Beach, and some of our members

joined the class. Some came out and were able to help with marking the course, which we

followed up later with the classroom portion on Friday night. We did the parking lot portion

Saturday morning, and enjoyed the cooler weather which was nice. And many thanks go out to

Bill Dunaway from Chapter “J” who helped coordinate the use of this parking lot. By the way,

everyone passed.

The ride up to Prosser’s in Myrtle Beach on Saturday was cancelled, partially due to no one

responding they wanted to go, and I think that was partially because of the forecast for rain. But,

like in most areas, we had a short 20 minute shower, and everything cleared up for the rest of the

afternoon.

We had some folks to go to the Florida District Rally in Orlando, FL. I have not heard yet who

won the motorcycle. We also had another Meet to

Eat at Castillo’s Ristorante & Pizzeria. What a

turnout. We had 24 people there, with only 1

guest. And they kept pushing tables together until

they ran out, and then some folks joined us in the

booths beside of us. It seems we always have a

good turnout here, so maybe we should do this

location more often.

We followed this up with a PGR (Patriot Guard

Riders) ride up to their Meet & Greet in Columbia.

We had some who couldn’t go, because they

decided to go see the commissioning of the USS (Continued on page 3)

Ralph Johnson at the Charleston Harbor (see next page). But, those who rode up to Columbia

was a nice casual back road ride, with great weather. Same was true for the ride home.

So, that just about wraps up the month of March. Now to address some other things.

One, thing is a message from one of our members. Some of you are familiar with Black Tom

Road, up in the Cross/Moncks Corner neck of the woods. It is reported as NOT a good road for

motorcycles, of any kind now. Apparently, the recent weather caused a lot of pot holes to

develop, along with some of the road just dissolving. So, until Berkeley County can get it

repaved (which happens to be planned, but no date set), you may want to avoid this road. And

the comment was, it was even rough on the four-wheel cage, so just a word to the wise.

Next up. I would like to address what our chapter is about. First of all, we are a family

organization. Not all of us will see eye to eye all the time. The adult thing to do is to agree to

disagree sometimes. But what I will not accept is publicly criticizing, slamming, or just bad talk

about our members. We don’t come to the rides or gatherings for drama, so please don’t bring

them in. If you have a problem, conflict, or disagreement, you are welcome to bring that to me,

and we can address a plan to work on this. Sometimes, we have people who are having health

issues, which can also affect their personality. If I know that, I can warn issues off. Not that it is

my job to be the peacekeeper, I will dutifully appoint myself as the drama squasher.

Another thing. We do have members who are not doing well. When I know about it, I try to

keep in touch, and see if there could be a helping hand. Not everyone wants a helping hand, but

most of us will not turn down a prayer, so if you have something in your life, let me know. It may

not be me helping with your situation, but I will reach out to members who may have had a

similar situation.

Last up, we have lots of things in store for the chapter. Next Months (April’s) Gathering will be

back at Logan’s Roadhouse at our normal times. There will be a Seminar at 10am, come in the

side door. Then we will start gathering at 11:00am, then have the gathering/eat starting at 11:30.

Next month is also our double points month, so maybe we will have some friends from the other

chapters to come join us.

Also next month, I will be teaching an ARC-R (Advanced Riders Course-Refresher) up in Liberty.

There is no classroom for this, but there is extra time allocated on the range for discussion.

Course will be on Saturday, April 7, so contact me if you have a desire to attend.

We also have the Spring Mountain Trip planned for April. This will be a four day trip, leaving out

Thursday morning, and returning on Sunday. There are some great rides up in the Little

Switzerland, NC area. So, if you are interested, contact me.

And that said, we are looking forward to October for our Fall Mountain Trip (or Fall Trip). We

are looking for ideas. Two we have so far is a weekend at Ironhorse Motorcycle Lodge & Resort,

taking us to close to Fontana Lake, and the other suggestion is a Waterfall Trip to Highlands, NC.

Do you have another suggestion? Do you like one of these.

PLEASE… give us some feedback so we can plan what you

want to do.

And with that, that’s all this month.

Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and be thankful,

Mike Melton

USS Ralph Johnson Commissioning On March 24th, we had the privilege of attending the Commissioning Ceremony of the USS

Ralph Johnson (DDG 114) in Charleston Harbor. As a US Army Veteran, I

had no idea what to expect, but was looking forward to the experience

and learning about what happens in the commissioning of a new United

States Navy Ship.

We waited patiently for months anticipating the events and finally a

few days prior we received our Ceremony tickets and Parking Pass. In

an email, we were advised to get there early to get good seats and we

arrived about 8 AM, which afforded us great seats up front with the

friends and family of Ralph Johnson.

We learned that Marine Private First Class Ralph Henry Johnson was a

Charleston native who followed his boyhood dream and volunteered to serve

his country in a time of war. On March 5, 1968 in the Quan Duc Valley of

Vietnam, PFC Johnson’s reconnaissance patrol was attacked on Hill 146 by

approximately 40-50 enemy soldiers. When a grenade landed near him, PFC

Johnson yelled a warning and without hesitation, hurled his body to cover it

and shield his fellow Marines. He absorbed the full impact of the blast and

was killed instantly.

On April 20, 1970, President Richard Nixon presented the Medal of Honor,

the nation’s highest honor, to PFC Ralph Johnson’s family. He is interned at

the Beaufort National Cemetery.

About the Ship: It’s keel was laid on September 23, 2014 at

Huntington Ingalls Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

Later christened by the Ship’s Sponsor, Mrs. Georgeann

McRaven, on April 2, 2016. The new ship was delivered to

the Navy on November 15, 2017. Other century old traditions

followed, such as Mast Stepping and designing the Crest and

the Pennant, and something I had learned about some time

ago—the Plankowner. Tradition states that, according to the

sacred law of the sea, each Sailor who serves as a member of

the commissioning crew owns one plank of the ship, which

he or she may claim after the ship is decommissioned and

disassembled. Since ships are no longer built of wooden

planks, the tradition continues and each Sailor receives a commemorative plank and certificate to

honor the occasion and the right to claim the title of Plankowner.

(Continued on page 5)

USS Ralph Johnson Commissioning (continued)

This Ship is the Navy’s latest addition as an Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer.

It is 509 ft long, displaces 9,250 long tons, has a maximum speed of 30+

knots, has a compliment of 30 Officers and 260 Enlisted. It has 4 GE LM 2500

gas turbine engines, 3 Rolls Royce gas turbine generators and carries 2 MH-

60 R/S Helicopters. The Radar, Sonar, and Electronic Warfare Suites act as its

sensors. The most impressive is it’s armament: too many to list all of them

even if I knew what they are. They include a Vertical Launching System,

Tomahawk Land Attack System, Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles, Anti-

Submarine Rockets and Torpedoes, 4 5” Guns, and Phalanx Close-In Weapon

Systems. It is the fastest, most capable AEGIS Guided Missile Destroyer in

the US Navy’s Fleet. It’s Motto is “CELER SILENS MORTALIS” (Swift Silent

Deadly). Suffice it to say it is built for war. Period.

About the Ceremony: Starting with

the Arrival of the Official Party, “Ruffles and Flourishes” was

heard , followed by a 19 gun salute. The Honor Guard was a

mix of Sailors and Marines from Joint Base Charleston. The

National anthem was sung and an Invocation was offered by

Reverend Collins, Pastor at Shiloh AME Church. A host of

dignitaries, including Mayor Tecklenburg, Senator Scott,

Governor McMaster, Commandant of the Marine Corps

Neller, and others spoke briefly about PFC Ralph Johnson,

his legacy and the confidence that the crew will live up to

the challenges ahead.

Ralph Johnson’s sister, Helen, introduced several family members that followed in his footsteps in

different branches of the military and spoke of Ralph’s growing up in Charleston and fulfilling his

dream of becoming a Marine and recounted many acts of giving he was best known for as a boy.

Finally, Secretary of the Navy Spenser placed the ship “In

Commission”. Commanding Officer Patterson reported the

ship to duty to Operational Commander Mahon, who then

set the first watch and manned the ship with a crew with the

command: “Bring

Her to Life”. The

entire crew runs up

onto all the decks of

the ship, the United

States Flag is hoisted

and the ship is fired

up.

What a great experience for the hundreds, if not thousands,

of guests seeing a commissioning for the first time.

Wishing you fair winds and following seas!!!

Practice

It is that time of year again, “Spring” you say! No, Practice time. Some of us have been

lucky enough to be able to ride all winter, at least occasionally but others have been out

rarely. Before it finally warms up fully and the rides get in full swing now is a good time to

get in some practice.

Although a TRC or ARC or other structured class is good you don’t need a class to practice

some essential skills. All you need is a vacant parking lot and something to use as cones.

Tennis balls cut in half or even some sheets of paper held down with fishing sinkers. Find a

school or church lot that isn’t being used, doesn’t need to be large, just vacant.

Your practice doesn’t need to be elaborate either. Set up some markers in a straight line

10 or 15 feet apart and weave back and forth between them. Sounds easy, but you may be

surprised! As you get better move markers closer together. This also gives you a u-turn at

each end, something many riders have trouble with. Also do figure 8’s which gives you a turn

in each direction.

These two simple exercises will help get you in shape and are the building blocks for all

formal training courses.

Remember, riding up and down the road and turning in and out of the driveway doesn’t

require much but what about an emergency situation where a quick swerve or a turn around

on a small road is required? Practice a few essential skills and be ready.

I am Sherri Pawlak and I would like to like to introduce myself to everyone in

Chapter G, “Tri-County Wings”. At one of the meetings they discussed

needing an Adult CPR/AED and First Aid course for the Level’s that needed to

renew. I offered my services as an Instructor as well as my equipment. Since

that time, I have taught two courses and trained 13 members. I will continue to

offer these courses at the needs of the membership.

I would also like to offer a course in Child and Infant CPR for those who

have young children at home as well as grandchildren that visit, especially

over the summer. If you are interested, please see me at any of the meetings

or contact me at [email protected].

Recipe of the Month

Chocolate Zucchini Bread

Ingredients 1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup Dutch process cocoa

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

2 large eggs, at room temperature

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

1/4 cup canola vegetable oil, or melted coconut oil

3/4 cup packed light brown sugar

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups packed shredded zucchini

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips, divided

Preparation Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-by-5-inch loaf

pan with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and sea salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, add the eggs, melted butter, oil, vanilla extract, and brown sugar. Stir until smooth. You might have a few small brown sugar clumps and that is fine.

Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, don’t overmix. Stir in the shredded zucchini until just combined. Stir in 3/4 cup of the chocolate chips.

Pour batter into prepared pan. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of chocolate chips over the top of the bread. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the

bread comes out mostly clean, you might have some melted chocolate chips on the toothpick

and that is fine. You just don’t want a lot of gooey batter.

Remove the pan from the oven and set on a wire cooling rack. Let the bread cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Run a knife around the edges of the bread and carefully remove from the pan. Let

the bread cool on the wire cooling rack until slightly warm. Cut into slices and serve.

Note-if you use coconut oil, make sure it is melted and slightly cooled. The bread will keep on the

counter, wrapped in plastic wrap, for up to 4 days. This bread also freezes well. To freeze, cool

the bread completely and wrap in plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 1 month.

Defrost before slicing.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Ponderings (Some Things to Think About, But Not Too Seriously)

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog’s face, he gets mad at you, but when

you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window.

If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?

If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

When cheese gets its picture taken, what does it say?

Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist but a person who drives a racing

car not called a racist?

Why are a wise man and a wise guy opposites?

Why do overlook and oversee mean opposite things?

“I am” is reportedly the shortest sentence in the English language. Could it be that “I

do” is the longest sentence?

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn’t it follow that electricians

can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons

debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?

What hair color do they put on the driver’s licenses of bald men?

I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny little spoons and forks so I

wondered what do Chinese mothers use? Toothpicks?

Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to

do, write to them? Why don’t they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the

postmen can look for them while they deliver the mail?

You never really learn to swear until you learn to drive.

Last night I played a blank tape at full blast. The mime next door went bonkers.

Tis the season to be rainy… and they can pop up out of nowhere. Are you prepared for the wet

roads? Check your tires and make sure you have plenty of tread. Pack your rain gear and always

have it ready. Make sure you have some type of eye protection to keep the rain out of your eyes.

And don’t forget that footwear. Nothing’s worse than water standing in your boots!

Note: If you are new to Chapter ‘G’, or if we've missed your birthday or anniversary, please send an email to Mike Melton at [email protected]. Include your name, birthday (no year needed) and anniversary (also no year needed).
