International companies such as BMWManufacturing, adidas and Michelin,to name just a few, employ 107,000 peopleand have invested more than $37.3 bill ion

looking for a place to build high-techautomatic transmissions, it selectedLaurens County, where its $350 millionplant is expected to employ 900 workersby 2015. The company also has a facilityin Duncan, which supplies parts forBMW vehicles built in Spartanburg. The companys customers include luxury

automakers Rolls Royce and BentleyMotors. The new facility will bea supplier for Chrysler.

South Carolina provides anenvironment where global companiescan grow, with state-sponsored workforcetraining programs, a well-developedtransportation network that includesconvenient interstate and rail accessand the Port of Charleston, pro-business

policies, and the presence of numeroussuccessful international companies, saysBryan Johnson, manager of marketingand communications for ZF GroupNorth American Operations.

There are synergies in SouthCarolina, says Johnson. With companieslike BMW and Michelin creating a hubof industry and technology to work from, that was extremely beneficial for us.

South Carolina not onlywants to lure new businessto the state it also has

a host of programs to nurtureexisting businesses.

Among its arsenal is BuySC,a supplier locator service thatconnects South Carolina businessesto other South Carolina companiesthat can meet their needs.

We go mining for our owncompanies here in the state, through our databases, throughour relationships with companiesand through our allies, suchas regional or local economicdevelopment councils orprofessional trade associations, says Chuck Bundy, managerof business services for theSouth Carolina Departmentof Commerce.

    For example, the department

was instrumental in connectingThe Boeing Co. with numeroussuppliers throughout the state, boosting sales and job opportunitiesin many communities, Bundy says.

One company that has utilizedthe program is Kellett EnterprisesInc., a Greenville-basedmanufacturer and distributor oftextile machinery, accessories and

supplies, including the LP-13 ShakeAbsorber Vibration and IsolationPad used in a variety of industries. The BuySC program helped thecompany find suppliers for manymaterials, including plastics andwashers, says Terry Mauldin, vicepresident of sales. Kellett is nowusing the programs onlinedirectory of South Carolina-ownedbusinesses to find home-basedsuppliers of industrial glue.

    Anytime we can, we buy

locally, Mauldin says. It keepsmoney here in South Carolina.

Small South Carolinacompanies seeking to be suppliersoften ask the states CommerceDepartment to make introductionsto bigger companies.

Because of our relationships, its easy for us to help smallercompanies make that connection,

Bundy says.South Carolina also offersthe readySC program, one ofthe oldest and most experiencedworkforce training initiativesin the United States. The programoperates in conjunction with the16 members of the South CarolinaTechnical College Systemand works with expanding orrelocating businesses to recruit, screen and train workers incustomized training programs.

companies launch their businesses throughfunding, mentoring and support so thattheyll thrive and create more jobs for SouthCarolinians. The program is a collaboration

of the South Carolina Research Authority(SCRA), the commercialization armof South Carolinas major universities:Clemson University, the Universityof South Carolina and the MedicalUniversity of South Carolina.

The initiative aims to help entrepreneurswith start-up companies using researchbased information from universities.

As such, SC Launch has a numberof pre-company university startupinitiatives, such as proof-of-concept,clinical trials, intellectual property

    support, business plan servicesand licensing.

SC Launch zone managers mentorstartups in their regions, connectingthem with other businesses, as well aslocal economic development andacademic sectors, to provide anecosystem of support. The programalso provides grants, loans and equity

investments to startups to defraythe cost of services such as legal, financial, marketing and intellectualproperty protection.

Startups also have access to SC Launchresource partners, professionals who

provide business services, such asbanking, accounting, legal, insurance, advertising, human resources, information technology and marketing.

In June, SC Launch was namedNonprofit Organization of the Year in2011 by the American Business Awards. This national award, known as the StevieAward, recognized SC Launch for its rolein leading collaborative entrepreneurialand economic development efforts.

EV Power Systems, a startup in RockHill that designs, sells and services hybrid

Established in 1961, the readySCworkforce development trainingprogram is one of the oldestin the United States. The programoperates in conjunction with the16 members of the South CarolinaTechnical College System.

The program serves as a bridgebetween workers and companies

CCHS,a national leader in homewarranties and service plans, opened a customer-care centerin Anderson in 2008, thenexpanded the number ofemployees at the facility in 2011.CCHS found many of the 300-plus employees for the centerthrough readySC.

The program provided pre-hiretraining that included such topicsas time and stress management, diversity, problem-solving andbasic customer services. Thenonce the hires were made, readySC trained 205 customer-service representatives and 115authorize/retention associates.Dedicated training space wasprovided by Tri-CountyTechnical College.

ReadySC worked closely withus from the onset to make certainthat all of our recruiting andtraining efforts worked towardsgetting the right people in theright place at the right time, says Mike Roneker, CCHSoperations manager. our companys growth.

proGrm meS n ImpcTIt does not take the creation

of hundreds of jobs for readySC

to make an impact. In August2010, zinc production companyHorsehead Corp. openeda production facility in Barnwellthat resulted in the hiring of 65employees, 55 of whom weretrained by readySC.

Though the number of newjobs was relatively small, thefacility represented a $70 millioninvestment by Horsehead in thestate. And Horsehead officialsmake it clear that the readySC

program was a major factor inthe companys choice of SouthCarolina as the location for thenew facility.

readySCs serv ices played asignificant role in Horseheads

decision to locate in SouthCarolina, and its a decisionwe havent regretted, saysEric Stroom, plant manager.

The readySC team did anoutstanding job supportingthe recruitment and trainingof our initial workforce.

The team worked closelywith our group to developa spot-on curriculum andtraining vehicle that our staffeffectively delivered. This programwas an essential ingredient inproviding our new employeeswith a basic understanding ofHorseheads mission, expectations,

technologies and processes onday one of employment. Ourstartup was a tremendous success, due in large part to the preparationof our workforce through readySC.It was a tremendous team effort.
