SCREENSHOTS FROM REPORT
The global Bottled Water market reached an estimated value
of approximately US$217.7 billion in 2020. The market is
expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
of 11.1%, to reach a value of approximately US$505.2 billion
in 2028, as illustrated in the adjacent graph.
o This growth in the Bottled Water market is set to be driven by several key
factors, including the ongoing health and wellness trend amongst global
consumers. Along with this, growing awareness regarding the health
benefits associated with the consumption of Bottled Water, is further
contributing to growth of the market amongst these consumers.
o Additionally, the significantly high growth of the Bottled Water market in
Asia-Pacific is contributing positively to the growth of the overall global
market. In particular, the Chinese, Indian, and Japanese markets have
been achieving significant growth in the region, illustrated by the high
profits being achieved by players in these countries.
o Furthermore, growing concerns regarding the safety of regular tap water
amongst consumers globally is driving demand for Bottled Water
products, which are seen as safe and healthy alternatives. This is a result
of safety and quality of water becoming a prime concern amongst
consumers, with many incidents of contamination resulting in greater
doubts regarding tap water safety.
o In terms of segmentation, the global Bottled Water market can be
segmented by product type into Purified Water, Mineral Water, Spring
Water, Sparkling Water, Distilled Water, and Other. Sparkling Water is also
marketed globally as Sparkling Drinking Water or Sparkling Mineral Water.
o In 2020, the Purified Water category held the largest share within the
product type segment, with 35.0%. This is largely due to increased
demand for water, as populations expand, and consumption increases.
The Sparkling Water segment is anticipated to be the fastest growing from
2021 to 2028, with a predicted CAGR of 11.7% for the period.
o However, the contribution of Bottled Water products to environmental
pollution through plastic waste, poses a challenge to the market’s
continued growth, as consumers become more aware of the impact of
these products on the environment.

Water-Based Alcoholic Drinks on the Rise
o As South African consumers continue to focus on health and wellness,
many are becoming more aware of the sugar and calories contained in the
alcoholic drinks they consume. As a result, many consumers are looking
to Sparkling Bottled Water-, Flavoured Bottled Water-, and Soda Water-
based drinks, as a healthier alternative to sugary mixers.
o In particular, Club Soda, Soda Water, Seltzer, and Sparkling Mineral
Bottled Water offer a zero-calorie and sugar-free alternative to traditional
mixers, such as tonic water. As a result, these products have become
popular ingredients in various cocktail recipes available online, including
Hugo Cocktails, Very Berry Smash, and Gin Daisy Cocktails, amongst
others.
o Furthermore, several cocktail recipes making use of Sparkling Flavoured
Bottled Waters, have also become popular. These recipes make use of
Sparkling Flavoured Bottled Water products, as a healthier source of
additional flavour, and can be found on various websites. Examples of
these cocktails include the Blackberry Coconut Splash cocktail, which
makes use of coconut Flavoured Sparkling Bottled Water, as well as the
Skinny Key Lime Pie cocktail, which includes lime Flavoured Sparkling
Bottled Water.
o However, it is not only consumers using these Bottled Water products, but
more alcohol manufacturers are also capitalising on this trend. One such
example is Mood Gin, a Cape Town-based drinks company which has
developed a gin, specially designed to be mixed with Soda Water or
Sparkling Bottled Water.
o This provides consumers with an alternative to traditional gin and tonics,
that is lower in calories, while still offering a delicious gin experience.
o In addition, several ‘hard’ Seltzers, that combine Sparkling Bottled Water,
alcohol, and various flavourants, have been released in South Africa.
These products offer South African consumers convenient low-calorie
alternatives to existing alcoholic beverages and include Flying Fish
Seltzer, Frost Sparkles, and Freely ‘hard’ seltzer.
o As a result of the introduction of innovative products such as these, as
well as consumer’s increasing concerns regarding their health, demand
for Water-based alcoholic beverages is likely to increase. As a result, this
trend is likely to continue to grow in 2021 and beyond.
