Addo Elephant National Park
• Established in 1931 to save 11 Elephants on the brink of extinction, and now home to more than 450 of them
• Plus… 400 Cape Buffalo, 48 black Rhino, a range of Antelope species, lions and hyenas as well as the rare flightless dung Beetle

De Hoop Nature Preserve• The reserve has 86 mammal species including the rare
bontebok and Cape mountain zebra, as well as eland, grey rhebuck, baboon, yellow mongoose, caracal and the occasional leopard.
• This is were we will meet the South African teachers that will travel with us.

• Dolphins and seals occur in the waters off the coast and southern right whales calve and mate in the sheltered bays of De Hoop each year between May and December.

Stellenbosch UniversityWe will meet with Environmental Educators at this university to learn about Environmental Education training in South Africa and to share our experiences teaching students about the environment.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
South Africa is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, it touches 2 oceans and although is only about 2% of the world's land area, but is home to nearly 10% of the world's plants. The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens protects and protects these plants and teaches people about the importance of this biodiversity.
Biodiversity - is the variety of life including different plants, animals and and the ecosystems they live in.

Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF)
• The DWAF works to promote safe healthy water.
• They are a governmental agency that is like our Department of Natural Resources.
• We will do a service project with them that may include invasive species removal.

Robben Island• Robben Island is best known as the location of
a prison which held Nelson Mandela a political prisoner during South Africa’s apartheid period. Mandela was held there for 27 (1962-1990) years and eventually became the president of South Africa.

Table Mountain•This is a flat-topped mountain in southwestern South Africa, overlooking Cape Town and Table Bay. • Its shape results from horizontal layers of sandstone being exposed by erosion.

• The floor of the 65 passenger cablecar rotates 360 degrees on the trip which takes 5-10 minutes to reach the summit/base travelling at a speed of up to 10m per second on its 704m (2310 feet) climb.
