gain considerable autonomy. Therefore, Barcelona is considered to be the capitalof Catalans. Representatives of the Government of Catalonia take great care

to ensure greater rights for their region. Unlike Basque, aspire to independence without violence, assassinations and killings.

Galicians are a national and cultural group whose historic homeland is Galicia, in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. Two Romance languages are spoken and official in Galicia: the native Galician, and Castilian. Many Galician surnames have become Castilianized over the centuries, especially after the forced submission of the Galician nobility obtained by the Catholic Monarchs in the last years of the 15th century.  This reflected the gradual spread of Spanish language, through the cities, in Santiago de Compostela, Vigo, Ferrol, A Coruña and Lugo.

The Basques are an aboriginal ethnic group who primarily inhabit an area traditionally known as the Basque Country and straddles parts of north-central Spain and south-western France.

Basques speak their own language and have a very developed independence movements.Since then, despite the current limited self-governing status of the Basque Autonomous Community and Navarre as settled by the Spanish Constitution, a significant part of Basque society has attempted higher degrees of self-empowerment (see Basque nationalism), sometimes by acts of violence.
