Read a Vendor Snapshot for NEC
To introduce a detailed research report for TalkingPointz.com , David Michels wrote a company
overview art icle about NEC. The post brief ly summarizes the telecommunication company's history,size, r each and featured product lines.
In addit ion t o hospitalit y and healthcare, NEC claims significant telephony
penetration in higher education. Each of these markets includes impressive
references: Some of the largest hotels in t he world, well known and prest igious
hospit als, and highly r egarded universit ies. The customer li st is an impressive global
collection of names.
NEC designs and engineers it s products for a worldwide market . Spherical l
development is taking place primarily in Il li nois and the Netherlands. Its core UC
business solut ion, avail able on Spherical l and on it s SV8000 products, is developed
by a partner in New Zealand.
That's an important point- -NEC heavily uses partners t o build-out it s soluti ons. The
company does not feel obligated to invent everything it self . However, t he finished
solution is predominately NEC branded and supported regardless of the source.

Open Source Spotlight: Scribus
Here at SoTel Systems, we are big fans of open source soft ware development. Recentl y,
SourceForge.net featured on their blog a program we are familiar with as their March Project of
the Month. The t ool is called Scribus, and it i s a page layout design applicat ion. It can handle
simple pr int shop tasks, but is powerful enough to handle large scale print businesses, magazinelayouts and just about any market ing material of any format. Here's a bet ter descript ion from Peter
Linnell, one of the founders of Scribus quoted f rom t he blog post .
Scribus is an open source page l ayout applicat ion. It's used for laying out magazines
and books. Especiall y the t ype of publications that are highly graphical in nature.
You can use it to create posters, all kinds of dif ferent publications, f or example
greeting card, things like that, of any arbitrary size and format. Its most powerful
aspect is the abilit y t o create commercial grade PDF, which goes to a commercial
printer, and just works.
