Dear Sorgho Families,
Happy spring! I
am certainly hoping that
this Sampler finds you
well and enjoying longer
days. We continue to be busy developing our young leaders here
at Sorgho.
March came in like a lion, and roared through most of the
month! Congratulations to our academic team for placing runner-
up in our district meet. The Washington, DC trip with 5th grade
was a huge success thanks to all the great students, parents, and
staff. We had a great time and learned so much about our coun-
try’s history. We finished out the month with our talent show and
a visit from the BMS band and orchestra groups.
April will be another busy month. We are very excited to
showcase all we have learned about the 7 Habits of Highly Effec-
tive People on April 12th with our Leadership Day. Students will
be showcasing all their leadership skills through tours, speaking
presentations, and demonstrations. It should be a very exciting
day.
Beginning April 22, we will take the Spring MAP
(Measures of Academic Progress). These tests measure student
progress in math, reading, and language arts. Please encourage
your child to do their best on these computerized assessments as
they help us know where the students are now and make plans for
the following school year. We need the best picture possible
showing what they know.
On April 26th, we welcome the Wulfe Brothers to Sorgho.
This band performs an educational show using rock music to teach
history. It is a Sorgho tradition and student favorite!
Finally, the upcoming K-PREP test window will be May
8th through May 15th. This is the state assessment given to all P3,
4th , and 5th graders in our building. Please make sure your child
does not have any scheduled appointments that would require the
student to miss school during that time.
In leadership, we are currently reviewing the different
habits. In April, we will review first things first and think win-
win. First things first means to organize your life in a way that
you do important things first and don’t waste time on things that
are not important like too much TV or video games. Think win-
win means having empathy for others, being able to listen, and
work out an agreement that everyone feels good about.
Thank you again for all your support in your child’s edu-
cation. Enjoy the spring sunshine as we move forward to achieve
our vision…
I am …ready to learn! I will… do my best! We will… finish
strong!
Thank you,
Laura Cecil

With the on-set of spring we would like to remind you of the dress code at Sorgho Elementary.

No “disruptive” or “extreme” styles (ex: col-ored, spiked or “different” hair, “bling” or ex-cessive jewelry, or piercing other than normal ear). School officials may deal on an individual basis with dress that will interfere with the educational process.
Attention Families of P3, 4th and
5th Grades Students
It is very important that your stu-
dent be at school on time during
the K-PREP testing window which
is MAY 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15. Please
do not schedule any appointments
that would require your student to
leave school during regular school
hours throughout the testing win-
dow. Thanks for helping us finish
strong on KPREP!

the DCPS district’s great expectation in providing a world-class
education for our children. I welcome open and honest dialogue,
suggestions, questions or concerns anyone might have.”
The goal of “Sit Down with Saylor” meetings is to make the super-

Sorgho’s Seven Habits Helper for Home
April Habit for Review:
Think Win-Win
Habit # 4 is to think win-win.
This requires us to have the
belief that everyone can be
successful if we respect and
understand each other. This
means that we listen and talk
to one another to create the
best situations possible. To
make win-win ways, we must
put deposits in other’s emo-
tional bank accounts. This
means we have clear expecta-
tions, act with kindness, cour-
tesy and respect, we apologize
and forgive. Withdrawals
happen when we are disre-
spectful, refuse to listen, and
badmouth others. Take time
at your home to talk to your
student about putting deposits
in others’ emotional accounts.
When we all respect and con-
sider each other’s feelings, we
can listen, talk, and then cre-
ate a win-win for everyone.
How do you demonstrate win-
win at home?
April Habit for Review:
Put First Things First In order to be an effective leader, we must
know how to prioritize, or do the important
things first. To reach goals we must have a
plan. This month we will talk to students
about big rocks. Big rocks are things that
are very important to take care of such as
tasks that help us reach our goals. For ex-
ample, we may have a test in a class. That
can be a big rock for a student. It is impor-
tant to carve a little time out of the sched-
ule each day ahead of time to be prepared.
This goal is all about creating a schedule
and a to-do list and sticking with it. Dis-
cuss not wasting time on things that aren’t
as important but can keep us from taking
care of our big rocks, such as too much TV,
video games, texting, computer, etc. With
testing in April and May, encourage your
student to put first things first in being
ready for testing. Make sure to schedule
enough sleep and to eat a good breakfast
daily.
Do you
have a fam-
ily sched-
ule?

Sorgho Seal Winner….Kailee Quisenberry
Kailee Quisenberry, 4th grade, won the “Sorgho Seal” contest
held by Mrs. Langdon’s social studies class. After studying Ken-
tucky symbols and the Kentucky seal, the 4th graders in Mrs.
Langdon’s 1st rotation created their own seal for Sorgho. Several
members of the Sorgho faculty and staff voted on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
place. Kailee Quisenberry won 1st place, Emma Grace Johnson
won 2nd and Nicholas Szemethy won 3rd. All of the seals were
very impressive and included the 7 Habits we have been introduc-
ing to the kids this year through the “Leader in Me” program.
