Latin American Studies: A Model of Indiscipline?

Cambridge, 1st October 2016 The SoReCom-Joint-IDP fellow Teresa Forte has participated in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Centre of Latin American Studies in Cambridge, UK. A one-day symposium brought together leading scholars in Cambridge and beyond to consider how the study of Latin America has challenged the theories and practices that define academic disciplines. In a famous essay, W. J. T. Mitchell extols visual culture as an ‘indiscipline’ that creates forms of ‘turbulence or incoherence’ at the boundaries of disciplines. If, as he claims, ‘interdisciplinarity’ has in many ways become consecrated and safely institutionalized, ‘indiscipline’ is a moment of rupture that brings the continuity and practice of a discipline into question. This symposium considered the extent to which Latin American Studies is characterized by such moments of ‘indiscipline’, Keynote speakers included: •  Julio Ortega (Brown University, UK) •  Adrián Gorelik (Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, Buenos Aires,

Argentina) •  Mara Viveros Vigoya (Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Colombia)

Asian Conference Media & Mass Communication in Kobe (Japan), 27-29 October 2016

This international and interdisciplinary conference on Media & Mass Communication is now in its seventh year, and it brought together a range of academics and practitioners to discuss new directions in media studies. The conference theme for MediAsia2016 was "Justice", and the organisers encouraged submissions on this theme from a variety of perspectives. The vision of IAFOR grew out of the perceived need to fill a vacuum in the communication and exchange activities of the academic world. Its mission arose out of examining that space and investigating why it existed. Moving beyond one particular field, larger questions arise. What function should universities prioritise in the 21st century? What do businesses see as their contribution to social and global well being? How can people on the ground, trying to implement improvements that will transform human life, best be supported? And perhaps above all, what are the agendas that will drive mechanisms to enable these groups to interact effectively.

IAFOR is affording opportunities that do not exist elsewhere. The base is the beautiful city of Kobe, nestled between the mountains and the sea and in the culturally and historically rich Kansai region, which includes neighbouring Osaka, and nearby Kyoto and Nara. Its conferences present those taking part with three unique dimensions of experience: 1.   interdisciplinary activity to be expanded 2.  heightening of intercultural awareness 3.  broadening of international exchange

Augusto Palmonari, Emeritus Professor of Social Psychology at Alma Mater Studiorum

University of Bologna passed away on October 20, 2016, after a long illness.

He was one of the generation of scholars who put a lot of effort in establishing the study

of Social Psychology in Italy.

He understood very soon the importance of the international scientific community and he

established friendly, fruitful, enduring and productive scientific relations since the ’70s

with Henry Tajfel, Serge Moscovici, Jos Jaspars, Willem Doise and many others who

have visited the University of Bologna in the last 40 years.

Not only he was motivated to international scientific relations but he inspired different

generations of students and junior researchers to pursue the same goal by studying

abroad, to the aim of establishing scientific relations.

He served in the EAESP Committee from 1978 to 1984 and in the Leading Committee of

the Laboratoire Europeen de Psychologie Sociale at the Maison de Science de l’Homme

in Paris (1983-2000). In 1986 he organized the 6th EAESP Summer School in Bologna.

He was Visiting Scholar at many academic institutions Van Leer Foundation (Israel),

Mexico City, University of Geneva, University of Oxford, University of Bern. He was

member of the editorial board of many scientific outlets among which European Review

of Social Psychology, Social Behavior, Journal of Adolescence Journal of Community and

Applied Social Psychology.

Particularly noteworthy, among many other contributions, is his work on the role of

adolescent peer groups in the definition of personal and social identity (some articles

were published on the European Journal of Social Psychology) and his books on Social

Representations .

In 2010 he received the Laura Honoris Causa in Psychology from the University of

Geneva. In 2011 he was awarded with the title of Emeritus Professor from the University

of Bologna. (Monica Rubini)

RememberingAugusto, by sharing feelings froma selecConofthe condolence messages sent to his friends and colleaguesfromBologna Le temps passe de plus en plus vite. Et mes contemporains me quittent uns à uns.

Cosa rara.

Augusto was an exceptional person, who combined grace with science, love for knowledge with an appetite for the innovative and new, if not for himself then for his students, and pushed them to excellence, looking for the best and improvement on all fronts. He had a very full and generous life and and was the master of gentle power - never offending, never demeaning and doing his best to improve his department, his university. His gentle strength and his generous character is one that I shall always remember him by, He was a person with a remarkable character that I admired. He was also the silent mover on an international scale and brought a unique composition of exceptional scientists together along with junior ones in whom he saw some promise. Indeed, I was to have the honour of being invited as a junior scientist to Bologna in 1986 to collaborate with Luciano Arcuri in teaching the EAESP (as it was called then) summer school. He coordinated this event masterfully and made sure that the event was etched into our memories for a life time - it was unique and I say this as having been involved in numerous other summer schools of this association and others. Indeed, his contribution to Psychology at Bologna and his energetic activities across diverse parts of Europe as well as his international collaborations made psychology in Bologna not only a prominent destination but a landmark in not only social psychology, but also psychology in general. In his own way, he was a silent giant whose gentle actions roared. Gun Semin, Netherland & Portugal I just heard the very sad news, that Augusto passed away. He gave so much to social psychology in Europe, in Italy and, of course, in Bologna. He will be greatly missed a giant in your country, without whose work people like you, and your students, and their students, would have no social psychology in Italy and Bologna today. I recall, before I ever met Augusto, the warmth and respect with which my dear mentor Henri Tajfel, and my mentor and friend Jos Jaspers spoke of him. With condolences to all in Bologna. Miles Hewstone, UK I have just read the EASP announcement of the loss of Augusto. I simply wanted to let you need that this news leaves me deeply sad. I know what his loss means for you all in Bologna, and I wanted you to know that I am profoundly sharing your feelings. Beyond the brilliant academic and the leader he was, Augusto was a particularly nice person, particularly faithful to his friends. I had the great pleasure to keep in touch with him, and still in the last years we collaborated in the preparation of a chapter. With my warmful feelings of friendship in these painful circumstances, to you and to all your colleagues, Bernard Rimè, Belgium

Ciao Augusto……
