Message from the Chairman

Today’s leadership continues to prioritize education as a major plank of its development strategy, working hard to introduce into its education infrastructure the highest global standards of excellence that will enable the UAE to fulfill its ambitious plans for the next fifty years. Its policy includes the need to weave into its education curriculum the supreme values of openness, tolerance, and mutual understanding embodied in the “Document of Human Fraternity” signed in Abu Dhabi by his Holiness Pope Francis and his Grace the Imam of Al Azhar.

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is at the heart of this education strategy, seeking through its partnership with one of the world’s leading universities to establish in the country an iconic beacon of learning and research that could serve the youth of our country, the region, and the world. Building on the UAE’s strategic and historic partnership with France, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi provides a veritable bridge between civilizations and a symbol of enlightenment and international understanding to the world.

H.E. Zaki NusseibehMinister of StateChairman of the Board of TrusteesSorbonne University Abu Dhabi

The UAE’s founding father Sheikh Zayed set Education for his young nation as his Government’s major priority, and worked hard to ensure that a universal education be provided to both boys and girls as a prerequisite condition for his people’s well-being and for his country’s sustainable development.

2019: The beginning of a new era

The creation of Sorbonne University as a result of the merger between Paris Sorbonne and Pierre et Marie Curie University and the nomination of Prof. Jean Chambaz as the President of Sorbonne University, followed by the appointment of a new Board of Trustees in Abu Dhabi during 2018 reflected a commitment to embrace this new vision, and address current and future challenges culminating with the appointment of a new management team to lead Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. Prof. Jean Chambaz’ appointment marked a seminal moment in the history of Sorbonne University, reflecting a collective commitment to effectively manage the operations of a larger and stronger institution following the merger of two leading universities.

Recruitmenttrend

Exceeding our recruitment target for 2021

Thanks to renewed tools, marketing and government support, we have exceeded our recruitment target for the 2021 academic year. There are a number of key contributors that helped us achieve this:

• The H.H. Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Scholarship has accounted for 351 new students • Increasing visibility: targeted digital and social media marketing campaigns have increased international brand exposure and facilitated a rise in recruitment leads and conversions • All accredited programmes are listed on the Ministry of Education’s online student portal, NAPO • The introduction of new programmes that align with market demand

Since inception, we have seen a steady increase in the number of students joining the university owing to our focus on local and international student recruitment strategies and building greater awareness around our offering.

Entrusting theleaders and thinkersof tomorrow

Most of the courses delivered in Abu Dhabi are those taught in France at Sorbonne University or the University of Paris. Our Abu Dhabi campus is a multi-cultural melting pot and is even more diverse than our campuses in Paris. This diversity creates an extremely rich campus experience, with events celebrating festive moments from different parts of the world. It is a place where students learn what multiculturalism means and how to make the most of it.

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi has fully adopted the UAE’s proclamation of 2019 being the “Year of Tolerance” because tolerance and respect are key tenets at the core of who we are. Seeing the harmony and connection between students from so many different countries offers hope for the future of the world.

Prof. Jean Chambaz President of Sorbonne University and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is in a unique position amongst higher education institutions in the UAE. This unique system ensures that the university can deliver an exclusive study experience to students at our Abu Dhabi campus.

Empoweringstudents by openinga door of opportunities

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi encourages and supports students to take part in global mentorship and further education programmes to complement their academic studies and enhance their employability profile upon graduation. These uniquely designed programmes offer specialised learning, as well as the chance to meet and engage with students from around the world.

Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education, Dundee, Scotland Summer School Programme 2019

This innovative programme prepares students for careers in global managerial and leadership positions and focuses on developing academic knowledge and skills through a series of lectures, tutorials and class discussions. The summer school programme provides an introduction to multiculturalism, cultural engagement and globalisation, as well as engaging students on broader issues that are related to leadership. The programme broadens our students’ cultural awareness by meeting students from different nationalities.

In 2019, 4 Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi students participated in the programme. Students are nominated by Heads of Departments with the final decision ratified by management. They must be Emirati women studying their 2nd or 3rd year of an undergraduate degree with a fluent command of English.

Women@Dior

Women@Dior is an international mentorship programme dedicated to young women from fashion, business or engineering schools. The programme aims to empower female students and help them fulfil their dreams by owning their professional destiny, be more confident, and develop valuable networks at the beginning of their careers. All participants are selected on three criteria: talent, ambition and generosity. They are all united in the idea that professional success is related to the strength of the sorority.

An official call for submissions to join the programme was circulated amongst all Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi students. Of the 40 students that submitted their CV’s, 17 were interviewed by representatives from the Dior Fashion House, which resulted in the eventual selection of 5 Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi students who joined the programme.

Nothing could really describe this trip. Every place we visited and every person I met inspired me and taught me something new.

Expandingour offer

The Continuing & Executive Education Department

The Continuing & Executive Education Department (CEED) was created in 2019 and contributes to the sustainable economic development of the UAE by offering programmes and learning opportunities that complement the skill demands of the economy and its future. It aims to advance and develop the careers of working professionals in promising and rapidly developing industries as well as to develop enhanced cooperation with the government sector and related corporate entities.

In 2019, CEED launched the Advanced Strategic Maritime Course, in cooperation with the French Navy and the first two sessions of its flagship programme, the Professional Certificate in Archives and Records Management, in cooperation with the National Archives in Abu Dhabi. To further expand its offering, CEED is launching new programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

4 new academic programmes

In line with our strategic plan, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi opened the Bachelor in Records Management and Archival Sciences, in cooperation with the National Archives in the UAE. The University also widened its academic offer in sciences. In addition to the Bachelor in Physics, we introduced a Foundation Year in Sciences in 2019 and the Bachelor in Math, specialised in Data Science for Artificial Intelligence is scheduled to open in 2020.

During 2019, the university embarked on a strategy to strengthen study options by offering new programmes to meet the current and future demands of the UAE’s economy and to remain at the forefront of higher education in the country. This included the widening of executive education options, as well as the introduction of new foundation year programmes. We continue this strategy moving into 2020.

Expandingour offer

We live in a world where data volume is increasing on a daily basis, underpinning the need for the government and corporate institutions to view archives management as a crucial discipline. To help UAE institutions face this challenge and meet the needs of future data archiving, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is developing new archive programmes at all levels in strong cooperation with the archives community in the UAE. In 2019, a professional certificate and an undergraduate degree programme were launched. A postgraduate degree is due to be launched in the coming years.

The National Archives and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi have a distinguished strategic partnership. The cooperation between the two parties has progressively developed; especially after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2018. This cooperation resulted in the graduation of two batches of students from the Professional Certificate in Archives and Records Management, and the launch of the Bachelor in Records Management and Archival Science at the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year. In the near future, we look forward to launching new postgraduate programmes in archival studies.

The scientific, professional and academic integration between the National Archives and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is a crucial step towards developing all aspects related to specialised studies and scientific research in the field of archival sciences and records management.

We aim to raise a generation that understands the importance of archival sciences, which represents the nation’s memory and the backbone of the decision-making process in any professional field.

Dr. Abdulla Al Raisi, Ph.D. Abu Dhabi National Archives Director General

The Advanced Strategic Maritime Course (ASMC) involves six modules to provide an advanced overview of the latest developments, issues and challenges relating to maritime security issues including the geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific, evolution of maritime activities, international law of the sea, technological disruptions such as naval artificial intelligence, importance of strategic leadership and how to design future naval operations in today’s world. This tailor made course was designed for Senior Officers in the UAE Navy, in close collaboration with the French Navy.

In September 2019, the Department of Sciences and Engineering opened the Foundation Year in Sciences (FYS). Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, through a strong collaboration with the Sorbonne University Faculty of Sciences, already offers the successful Bachelor in Physics, which launched in 2013. Sorbonne University’s excellence in science (ranked 2nd in mathematics and 11th in physics in the last Shanghai ranking), and the long-lasting and fruitful relationship with the Department of Sciences and Engineering at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, places Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi in a perfect position to open other programmes and develop new projects in science. The Foundation Year in Sciences, the first of these new projects, will equip motivated and passionate students with the background and skills required to succeed in any undergraduate science programme.

Dr. Valérie LeGuyon Head of the Sciences & Engineering Department

In a world where the volume of data increases daily, across all professional sectors, the Bachelor in Records Management and Archival Science fulfils job market requirements in this strategic field. Students enrolled in this degree programme, designed in collaboration with the National Archives of the UAE and Sorbonne University in Paris, acquire a thorough knowledge of records management and digital archiving. The degree develops a student’s understanding of the information handling processes and use within UAE organisations and beyond, develops the basic principles of records management and archives, and explores their application in professional practice. This is a key qualification to equip students to face the challenges of disruptive technologies including big data, data mining, Blockchain and artificial intelligence that have transformed the use and management of records in modern day societies and companies.

Focus on the winning project of the “Abu Dhabi Young Investigator Award”

In the context of closing the Year of Tolerance in the UAE, this project seeks to explore new ways of construing and testing the concept of tolerance as a central ethical norm, instrumental to the shaping of multicultural societies in the midst of a globalised world, with a special emphasis on the particular sociological context in the UAE.

There will be two stages to the research. First, a theoretical approach aims to shape a conceptual understanding of what tolerance is as an ethical notion, using the phenomenological methodology. The aim here is to reach an understanding of the nature and limits of tolerant attitudes amongst subjects in society, based on the description of lived experiences and concrete mental processes (cognitive, emotional, evaluative) at work in the development of such attitudes. In a second field-oriented phase, the project will use sociological tools and methods (qualitative and quantitative) in order to measure tolerant attitudes within various population groups in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The research will employ three undergraduate students.

The general aim is to provide the UAE policy makers and public actors, especially the Ministry of Tolerance and Ministry of Education, with useful material on tolerance (conceptual and in terms of data collection). By making sense of how different populations in the UAE perceive tolerance and are able to develop tolerant attitudes, the research seeks to be instrumental to the promotion of respect between communities in the face of an on going economic and demographic growth in the UAE.

Dr. Claude Vishnu Spaak Head of the Philosophy and Sociology Department

The research activity model at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is based on international teams supported by Sorbonne University research centres in Paris.

This approach guarantees the critical mass needed for research efficiency in the Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi ecosystem. With the exception of sports lecturers, most local faculty members and all visiting professors hold a PhD from top-level universities and are affiliated to a laboratory in Paris ensuring a high standard of research.

Continuity of research activities at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is ensured by the international teams at Sorbonne University laboratories. Moreover, the Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi branch of CEFAS - The French Center for Archaeology and Social Sciences (Centre Français d’Archéologie et de Sciences Sociales), a unit of the French National Center for Scientific Research – CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), is a salient illustration of the inclusion of our university in the French research institutions eco-system. Our student’s benefit from extensive international research and publications by visiting professors and full-time professors.

The Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi research agenda in 2019 has focused on reflection and construction to identify the most impactful projects for the years to come.

Three subject areas were identified:

• Heritage and science • Entrepreneurship and business • Digital data

This year has been a defining moment for research at the university. After years of reshaping and achieving a successful research model in Paris, 2019 opened new opportunities for Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi to become a research hub in Abu Dhabi.

Research projects

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi supports research by dedicating a portion of the university’s budget to fund research projects led by our full-time Abu Dhabi based faculty. Additionally, a high success rate for research funding from ADEK (Department of Education and Knowledge) recognises our standing as an active research university.

In 2019, 2 projects were awarded an ADEK funding:

• Dr. Ioannis Kourakis, Assistant Professor in Physics, Sciences and Engineering Department Project (Jan 2019): Of space weather and signal transmission in a desert climate: revisiting the role of dust particles and geomagnetic storms on atmospheric plasma waves.

• Dr. Claude Vishnu Spaak, Head of the Philosophy and Sociology Department Project: Abu Dhabi Young Investigator Award: Ethics of Tolerance: Phenomenological and Sociological Perspectives.

As such in December 2016, France and the United Arab Emirates organised an international conference on heritage in danger in Abu Dhabi under the patronage of UNESCO. Its Final Declaration provides, in particular, for the creation of an international fund for the protection of cultural heritage at risk due to armed conflict, called the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH).

ALIPH is a financial institution whose aim is to attract, mobilise, manage and distribute resources to enable the implementation of programs of prevention, to protect any cultural property threatened with destruction, damage or looting because of an armed conflict and to participate in their rehabilitation.

ALIPH has already committed to finance the rehabilitation of the Askia tombs in Gao, Mali, as well as the Mar Behnam Monastery and the Mosul Museum in Iraq.

This article deals with the different legal and ethical issues related to the establishment of the fund, its operation, and also addresses the sensitive question of the selection of projects to be financed.

PhD students at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi

Under the supervision of Sorbonne University in Paris, PhD students conduct research in Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi under the supervision of a Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi professor.

As a Doctorate student in Geography at Sorbonne University in Paris, I have been doing research on the Gulf Region since 2015. My thesis is directed by Prof. Eric Fouache and tutored by Prof. Kosmas Pavlopoulos, Professor of Physical Geography at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. It focuses on marine level variations in relation to human occupancy in the Arabian Gulf, during the past 20,000 years. Every year, I travel to the UAE to perform fieldwork and stay in the residences at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, benefitting from a full-fledged campus. Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi provides real logistical support and is a true scientific endorsement to my research.

Sorbonne University is a truly global university with students originating from over 90 countries around the world. Our diverse campus is emblematic of Abu Dhabi’s status as one of the most globally connected and multi-cultural cities in the world.

We celebrate the richness that a diverse student body brings to our campus through a series of events and activities that bring students together and embody the spirit of inclusion and our focus as open to the world. Since inception, the university has committed considerable resource to attract students from the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas to ensure continuity in expanding the diversity of our student body.

Our status as a globally connected institution also extends to our programme offer with globally recognised degrees covering subject areas in high industry demand, and world-class faculty. State-of-theart campus

A minimart was opened on campus, providing a range of daily necessities to all staff and students. New pétanque courts at the back of the cafeteria also added a new and unique recreational space for students. A new 72-seat amphitheatre was built to increase our hosting capacity for lectures and events. We renovated several offices for academic staff, and built a dedicated Career Centre providing specialised career guidance and support to all Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi students and alumni.

Library

In 2019, a new version of the Institutional Research Repository was completed containing all the research published by Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi staff members since 2007. The repository is maintained and updated continuously as new research is published, and makes the retrieval of any published research by Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi instantly available.

A total of 1,211 new books were added to the library in 2019, which brought the total number of printed books to 109,505 by the end of the year. In addition, library users have access to more than 150,000 ebooks, while the library subscribes to a large number of electronic databases, which provides access to thousands of scholarly academic journal articles in full text. In total 7,841 books were borrowed by the library patrons during 2019, which was the highest number recorded during the past five years.

The library again played host to literary events, and during the past year, events such as the popular Majlis Littéraire, hosted by Dr. Vital Rambaud, were held on a regular basis in the library, along with the presentation of the winners of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, and the Le Prix Goncourt 2019.

The library followed the example of the Louvre Abu Dhabi for setting up book exhibitions such as the Rembrandt and Vermeer showcase. Other topical events such as The Year of Tolerance also received attention, and an exhibition of books about the Notre Dame was held after the devastating fire to the iconic Paris landmark.

The library was fortunate to receive a donation of the Encyclopaedia Palestinnica, from the Palestinian Business Council in the UAE. The encyclopaedia consists of 24 volumes and covers 400 years of the history of Palestine.

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi offers students an all-in-one, state-of-the-art campus including fully equipped residences, a well-stocked library, sports facilities and a cafeteria, all within minutes of each other. In 2019, we further improved our campus experience.
