But the pain only got worse, reaching from his back to his chest, making it impossible to breathe. When Dylan Harris [10] was taken to the emergency room, he discovered that the pain he felt came from a collapsed lung. He is now on the road to recovery. “I plan to continue running and hopefully this doesn’t happen again,” Harris said. “[The doctors] said it’s a less than five percent chance it will happen.” He had a spontaneous pneumothorax, which is more commonly know as a collapsed lung. He was admitted into the emergency room April 17. “I was running and I had some trouble breathing so my dad was just going to wait and see if it got better,” Harris said. “But it kept hurting to breathe so we went to the ER.” He started to notice the pain caused by his collapsed lung about a week before he went to the hospital. “We didn’t really know how serious it was or what steps would be taken to get him well,” Harris’ dad Tim Harris said. “Once we learned more about it we felt like his recovery time would be pretty good.” After a two week stay in the hospital, Harris is working towards a steady recovery. “I probably will just slowly get back into my routine,” Harris said. “Normally when I would go out to run on Sundays I would eat a light breakfast, do some stretches and run ten miles. Every other day of the week I would practice with the track team.” This is his second time to end his running season early, but he plans to be running again by the end of the summer. “We hope the surgery fully repaired his lung and that it’s better than before the injury,” Tim Harris said. “We are very optimistic about his future in running.”
