PREFACE
It is a pleasure to record the assistance which I have receivedfrom friends, colleagues, and institutions during my work onthis book. First thanks are owed to James Diggle, who read eachsection of the commentary as soon it was ready. Lyndsay Coo,Michael Reeve, and Martin West read the complete typescript, and Malcolm Davies and Neil Hopkinson substantial sectionsof it; Scott Scullion and Alan Sommerstein commented on theIntroduction and discussion of the staging of Ajax’s death.
I am grateful to the staff of the Hallward library in Notting-ham, the Bodleian, Sackler, and Taylorian libraries in Oxford, the British, National Art, and Institute of Classical Studieslibraries in London, and the Universiteitsbibliotheek in Lei-den. The kindness of All Souls College, Oxford, allows meespecially easy access to Oxford libraries. Almut Fries, Tim-othy Janz, and Jo Willmott gave me permission to cite theirunpublished DPhil and MPhil theses. David Butterfield, AlmutFries, Ranja Knobl, Kyriaki Konstantinidou, Helen Lovatt, andCressida Ryan acquired books and articles for me in Berlin,Cambridge, Gottingen, and Munich. I have received gifts, orextended loans, of books or microfilms from Luigi Battez-zato, David Butterfield, Angelos Chaniotis, Christopher Col-lard, Malcolm Davies, the late Aubrey Morley, Camillo Neri,Stan Owen, Andrea Rodighiero, Donald Russell, Alan Som-merstein, Christopher Stray, Simon Swain, Martin West, NigelWilson, Benjamin Wood, and Hugh Wright.
I submitted the typescript of this book to Cambridge Uni-versity Press on August , three years after I moved toNottingham and began work on it. I have been able to insertreferences to work published after that date, but only sporad-ically. The Syndics approved it on February , at whichpoint the typescript was closed. It has been delightful to workonce again with Michael Sharp and Muriel Hall during theproduction of the book.

PREFACE
I finished this book during a year of leave partly funded by myUniversity, partly by the Arts and Humanities Research Coun-cil; the School of Humanities at Nottingham and the BritishAcademy funded two earlier visits to Leiden. The Departmentof Classics at Nottingham allows scholars time for research ineven the busiest of terms. I am grateful to all my colleagues, especially Alan Sommerstein, for providing such a welcomingand stimulating scholarly environment by the banks of the Trent.
