Step 1. Filet Crochet End Pieces ( Make 2 )

• Row 1: Ch 35, dc in 8th ch from hook, *ch 2, sk 2, dc, *Repeat to end (=10 open mesh), ch 5, turn • Row 2: dc in next dc, *ch 2, dc in next dc, *Repeat to end (=10 om), ch 5, turn • Row 3: Same as Row 2, at end add 2 open mesh (see instructions) (=12 om), ch 5, turn • Row 4 & on, follow chart and instructions

Once the filet crochet edges are worked, they can be iron and blocked for symmetry (equal size).

Step 2. Fabric Preparation

• Clean and Iron fabric, Identify grain direction and whether there is a top/bottom aspect. Cut to 1" inch wider than crocheted edge measurement to allow for 1/2" in. hem.

• Machine or hand stitch 1/2" inch hem to the desired length of the runner at a width matching the crocheted edge width. Do not hem the ends of the runner.

Note: If adding the embroidery, see Step 8 now.

Step 3. Join the Filet Crochet to the Fabric • Line up the crocheted edges at the desired point, allowing 1/4" inch from

lowest edge of the top perimeter.

• Hand sew the top perimeter of the crochet edge onto the fabric in a permanent sewing thread similar in color to the crochet thread.

• Once the crocheted edge is secured to the fabric, flip over and from the back side cut away excess fabric leaving only 1/2" inch, then roll hem to 1/4" or 1/8" (the smallest you can manage) and sew this from the back side in a stitch that is mostly confined to the back area and less noticeable on the front.

Step 4. Crochet the Floral Appliques

Center Rose (Make 2): ch 5, join with sl st to 1st ch to form ring, ch 1, working in ring: sc, *ch3, sc, *repeat around for five (5) total ch3 loops, at end, sl st in beg sc, ch 1, working in the ch3 loops: sc-3dc-sc, at end, join with sl st in back between last and first petal, **ch 4, sl st in back between next petals, **repeat around, ending with sl st in beg sl st, ch 1, working in ch4 loops: sc- 5dc-sc, at end, join with sl st in back between last and first petal, ***ch 5, sl st in back between next petals, ***repeat around, ending with sl st in beg sl st, ch 1, working in ch5 loops: sc-7dc-sc, at end, join. Break thread long, do not weave in tail, but use it later to sew the rose onto the filet crocheted edge.

Smaller Roses (Make 4): ch 5, join with sl st to 1st ch to form ring, ch 1, working in ring: sc, *ch 3, sc, *repeat around for five (5) total ch3 loops, at end, sl st in beg sc, ch 1, working in the ch3 loops: sc-3dc-sc, at end, join with sl st in back between last and first petal, **ch 4, sl st in back between next petals, **repeat around, ending with sl st in beg sl st, ch 1, working in ch 4 loops: sc-5dc-sc, at end, join with sl st between petals, PICOT (ch3, sl st), ***ch 5, sl st in center dc, picot, ch 5, sl st in between next petals, ***repeat around, at end, join. Break thread long, do not weave in tail, but use it later to sew the roses onto the filet crochet edge.

Vines (Make 4): ch 30, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch to end, at end, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook to rotate and working over the previous made scs and into the two bars at the top of those sts: sc in each st across (too thicken but not widen greatly). At end, join. Do not block, stretch or pull on the vine, just set aside until we're ready to sew it onto the filet edge.

Leaves (Make 16): ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next, dc in next 3, hdc in next, sc in last, at end, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook to rotate, then mirror sts along the opposite side, at end, join with sl st to beg sc, ch 2, break thread.

Note: There is an additional larger rose shown in the vintage pattern and affixed to the fabric. It's optional. If adding the French Raised Embroidery work, add this rose following the pattern herein for "center rose" but with one more tier of petals by increasing the final ch by 1 and increasing the final dc by 2.

Step 5. Join the Floral Appliques to the Filet Crochet End Pieces Look at the photographs of the vintage and modern Rose Scarfs to identify the placement of the floral appliques. Start with the roses, stitching them down with the tails to secure them to the top side of the filet. Next place the vines between and sew down (stretching them if necessary to span the distance). Once the vines are secure stagger the leaves and sew these down.

Step 6. Make the Tassels

• There are 34 total tassels. To make one: Cut 12 strands of thread 8" in. (20

cm). Line up one end. Measure end to 3 1/2" (9 cm), bend and hold with

fingers of free hand.

• Insert hook under the threads being held and throw working thread over

the hook on opposite side.

• Pull up a loop, yo draw through both loops to secure. (1st st doesn't count)

• Working over the threads (and the tail), 3 sc, picot (ch 3, sc in last sc), 6 sc, picot, 4 sc, picot, 2 sc, picot, 4 sc, picot, 3 sc, working into the two threads on the bottom/opposite side: sc in that center sc of the 6sc, resume working over the threads on top side: 3 sc, picot, 3 sc, working into the two thread on the bottom/opposite side: sl st in that bet st. Break working thread long enough to weave in. Do not weave in tail, but use it later to sew onto edge of filet trim.

• With fingers, comb the tassel strands down and evenly snip edge to length

desired. (About 3" in.)

Step 7. Join Tassels to Filet Edges

Look at the photographs of the vintage and modern Rose Scarfs to identify the placement of the tassels. Start sewing tails on either side and work toward the center, initially, just focusing on lining up the center sc between the 2 top picots with the center of the of the lower filet edge. Note that the lower side picots of the tassels will line up with the side, this join is optional. Also note, that the lowest side picot of the tassels will line up with the upper side picot of the neighboring tassels, these joins are also optional.

Step 8. Optional Raised French Embroidery

Make a sketch on paper of the ideal size and transfer to fabric. Stitch the outline first, then fill with cross hatching. Embroider over the fill to make the raised look of the vintage piece. If unfamiliar with technique, there are a few tutorials online (check YouTube) or use an embroidery technique that you're comfortable with. Finish with crocheted rose attached to fabric (as per photo).
