When I was 10 years old, I won a short story competition and became a junior reporter for ITV for
the day - the world of media presented itself to me for the first time. Since then, my fascination into
this ever-evolving industry has grown. I enjoy evaluating human relations and I want to expand my
understanding and involvement by continuing my studies to degree level.
I am particularly captivated in how the written word translates itself in different media – from film
and television to magazines and newspapers. I believe that I have a real flair for making the written
word come alive. After attending a talk by Anna Murphy – Fashion Editor of The Daily Telegraph –my
desire to pursue a career in media was reinforced. Having always been interested in creative writing,
I am now considering specialising in journalism in the future.
“Cinema is a matter of what's in the frame and what's out,” is a quote from Martin Scorsese, most
famous for his psychologically complex films placing an emphasis on characterisation, which I came
to truly understand as I studied Media at A level. Learning how to use various video editing software
such Adobe Premiere Pro has really evoked an interest in the practical side of media such as film and
television and learning more about the art of filming, through various means such as attending a
regular film club, I realised that what you leave out of a shot or imply through other means, is just as
important as what is actually shown.
I have experience working with an independent filmmakers company in producing and filming a 30
minute crime thriller, soon to be extended to feature length, a project I hope to be a part of. (Talk
more about the techniques used etc.)
My media A-level coursework required me to publish my work on a blog - my current portfolio. I also
have a personal blog which I enjoy using often as it allows me to express my personal interests such
as photography, fashion and music in a creative form through images and writing. I enjoy filming and
editing short parody videos and uploading them to YouTube this demonstrates my innovation and
desire to pursue this interest outside of a curricular environment. I’d consider myself an avid reader,
keen photographer and enjoy creative writing.
My other A Level choices, Psychology and English, will also aid me in a media oriented direction; due
to the essay-based nature of these subjects, I feel that they have broadened my appreciation and
understanding of culture and human communication. I’ve also been involved in various publicity
projects, including creating business cards to help promote a local band and designing posters using
Photoshop software for fundraising events - as I’m member of the School’s Amnesty Team
I’ve also gained a range of skills such as interacting with members of the public, teamwork and
organisational skills through various work opportunities such as a part-time job in a Tea Shop,
cleaning company and catering business as well as voluntary work experience at a primary school. I
feel I have a dedicated work ethic and this will ensure my success on the course.
When I was selected for a week’s work experience in the internationally leading law firm ‘Burges
Salmon’, an experience which I feel gave me an invaluable insight into the workings of a large
organisation, I led a group of 7 people into planning and presenting an event to a panel of legal
partners as I feel I have strong communicational skills - this is reflected through my involvement
within a reading mentor scheme, working on a one to one basis alongside a younger student with
difficulties in reading as I gain a sense of reward in aiding others.

Continuing to study about the media would allow me to discover the different aspects of media’s
broad spectrum. Whether we are aware of it or not, the media surrounds us in our everyday lives
and as Malcolm X once said ‘the media’s the most powerful entity on earth’ and having a more
active role within the media industry has always been something I’ve desired.
