This Month’s Speaker is Francisco Baptista. He will be speaking on complex Paphs both past and present.

In a note to the Society Francisco stated, ”I have been growing orchids since 1985. I have produced many complex paph hybrids and also miltoniopsis in that period. My passion is com-plex paphiopedilums. I have spoken all over the USA and Mexico. I have been an American Orchid Society Judge for quite few years. I have been very lucky to have judged orchids all over the world. Orchids continue to fascinate me because you never totally learn all about them. Every day there is something new that you can learn.”

Francisco is sure to provide us with an outstanding presentation. He will also be providing the opportunity table with many different varieties of plants.

Special Announcement The Sonoma County Orchid Society Board of Directors is pleased to announce to the membership that after months of hard work and effort, mostly by our Treasurer, Steve Tierra, that the Internal Revenue Service has granted the Society tax exempt status under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We are classified as a public charity and the effective date of this exemption is May 15, 1957 and contributions to the Society are deductable un-der section 170 of the tax Code.

September Speaker – Tom Perlite, Golden Gate Orchids

Tom Perlite gave us a wonderful overview of six orchid species that are blooming in his greenhouse in September. His format was refreshing – show the blooming plant and talk about its culture – in-viting and answering questions from the audience. Tom talked about the following plants:

Dendrochilum magnum (macranthum): One of the largest Dendrochilum species, this spectacu-lar plant grows well under intermediate conditions, and needs bright light and consistent water and feeding when actively growing and flowering. Then the plant can dry out between waterings. Re-potting should be done after flowering.

Ansiella monticola: This cute little plant has angraecoid type white flowers which are large in comparison to the size of the plant. It comes from the Philippines and needs warm moist conditions with low light. It grows well mounted or in small pots.

Coelogyne usitana: This is another interesting plant from the Philippines which is almost always in bloom. It blooms on new growth, but is a sequential bloomer, providing a very long blooming season. It needs medium light and consistent moisture all year and does well under intermediate conditions. It does have “soft” leaves and can be susceptible to spider mites.

Cycnoches chlorochondon: This warm grower comes from South Africa and has the ability to produce both male and female flowers. It requires heavy feeding and water during the growing sea-son and a VERY dry winter rest. It should be repotted every year in the spring when the new growth is 3-4 inches tall. Small pots are best. Higher light conditions favor the female flowers which are smaller, fewer, and very waxy. Lower light favors the male flowers which are large and showier. Both are fragrant.

Dendrobium spectabile: This spectacular plant from New Guinea needs to be fairly large to bloom, but once in bloom, it has an extended flowering season. A complete lack of fertilizer in win-ter encourages good blooming. It grows well under intermediate to warm conditions and bright light. It does not require a dry winter rest. It should be repotted in the spring in relatively small pots.

Oncidium macranthum: Now classified as Cyrtochilum macranthum, this large spectacular plant is a cool grower, preferring a temperature range of 40 – 80 degrees F. The long spike variety can produce spikes as long as 30 feet. The short spike variety may be preferable, and it does have lar-ger fuller flowers. It should be grown in moss or larger bark and likes good air circulation.

2. The Society still has some small sized Rexius Bark available in 2 cu ft bags at a cost of $15.12/bag including tax. Jim and Kris Foster have a supply of perlite, charcoal and medium sized bark available for sale. Contact them for prices and sizes at 707-762-7124.

3. Marin Orchid Society Fall Auction being held on October 28 at Marin Art and Garden Center, 30 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in Ross. Silent auction 6:30 pm followed by live auction at 7 pm. Wine, cheese and other refreshments provided! Auction paddles $2.

Thanks to all for your input on the Newsletter. I am looking for someone who is interested in working with me on the newsletter. I have been publishing the newsletter for well over a year and would like to turn over the publishers job to someone in the society who may be interested. I am willing to work with you and transition over the position with the election of the new board next spring. Anyone interested just email or call.

Also I am looking for someone who is willing to become the informal society photographer. I have missed out on many photo opportunities that make the newsletter much more enjoyable for the readers and really need some help.

Since no one responded to last month’s orchid quiz, I have decided to suspend it for a while. It will come back again when you least expect it.

And finally, I encourage any and all of you to read the article submitted by Josie Lee about our Show Chair. It is excel-lent. Don’t forget that the show is just around the corner, February 7th and 8th, 2009. There is still plenty of time to vol-unteer.

Every time you bring a plant to Show and Tell, you will receive a chance to win the “Three Month Plant”. When you bring in your plant (or plants) to share, fill out the card identifying each plant along with your name and drop it in the box. A drawing will be held every three months.

Minutes of the July 2008 meeting were ap-proved. There was no meeting in August.

Treasurer’s report was approved. The Profit & Loss statement for the period of July 1st – Sept 10th, 2008 was presented. If anyone wants a copy, please contact Steve Tierra.

Josie Lee’s resignation creates another va-cancy on the board.

A petty cash fund of $20.00 was approved for the plant sales committee at the general meetings.

The October board meeting will be at 7:00 PM, November 13th, at Jim & Kris Foster’s house in Petaluma, CA.

THE LORE, LEGEND AND FACTS ABOUT TONY MININNO by Josie Lee

Those of us who went on the June bus trip were treated to visiting interesting places, seeing and buying beautiful orchids, and eating thoughtfully packaged snacks – due to the efforts of a great bus trip coordinator, Tony Mininno. It was indeed a wonderful day! What do you know about Tony, our show chair for the Spring 2009 show? The theme for this upcoming event is “Lore and Legend of Orchids”. Can you identify what are lore, legend and fact about Tony?

In 1997, tired of the bone-chilling temperatures and the knee-deep snow of the New York winters, Tony de-cided to leave New York. He moved to Sonoma County that summer. Being an artist, he was attracted to the “beauty of God’s county”. Or was that Luther Burbank who said that? Once here, it didn’t take Tony long to figure the goings-on and the lay-of-the-land of Sonoma County. Tony, a get-in-there and get-it-done kind of guy, always did it with style. Tony came to our Spring1998 show and joined our society. The first SCOS meeting right after the show, there was an announcement for volunteers to be the next show chair. Tony signed up! In 1999, he chaired “Orchids - Jewels of the Jungle”. In keeping with the show theme, Tony ar-ranged for live wildcats on stage for preview night. Luther Burbank Gardens was the beneficiary for preview night. In 2000, he chaired “The Magic of Orchids”. For the preview night, he brought in Food For Thought who catered the event and was the beneficiary. Food For Thought continued to cater and benefit from our spring show preview nights through 2004.

Not being show chair for the past few years doesn’t mean that Tony has been idle in SCOS. He has sup-ported SCOS and other show chairs by being the set-up guy for every single spring show our society has put on since 1999. What gave Tony the confidence to volunteer to be show chair the first year he joined SCOS? To supplement the starving artist syndrome back in New York, Tony catered events. He once catered the 100th Anniversary Dinner of the New York Entomological Society – menu included Peppery Delight Meal-worm Dip, Live Honey Ants, Waxworm Sushi with Tamari Dipping Sauce, and Chocolate Cricket Cake.

Making his home in Sonoma County, in between shows, Tony slowly accumulated orchids. As his orchid col-lection grew, he built a 10’x15’ greenhouse. Like all beginners, he collected whatever pleased his eyes. Over the years, he’s learned what orchids are his favorites and what he can grow well. His collection includes laelia anceps, laelia cattleyas, lycastes, besseae type phragmipediums, dendrobiums and cymbidiums. He has a 10’x16’ lath area for his cymbidiums.

Tony marvels at how he has continually met great friendly, open and down-to-earth people in our society. Before building his greenhouse, he visited SCOS “open greenhouses”-- saw how different greenhouses are put together and operated, and received invaluable advice from SCOS colleagues. He credits his knowledge of orchids to SCOS members and the speakers at our meetings. That’s what SCOS is about – sharing and doing orchid stuff!

So how much of the above is lore? How much fact? Volunteer to help to make our upcoming show a great one. You need not have catered any dinners. Tony will help you get going on what needs to be done. If you’re not sure how you can participate, Tony will find you that perfect job. You’ll get to know Tony – and you’ll find out what’s lore, what’s legend, and what’s fact. Fact is, you’ll meet and get to know many wonder-ful people, you’ll learn more about orchids tête-à-tête, and it will be fun.

Hello Everybody, yes you out there, the SCOS membership. What’s wrong with the picture you see above? I see two things wrong, 1) The majority of the peo-ple are the same ones year after year only in different places and 2) There are 4, yes FOUR vacant positions listed above and there will probably be more next year since all of the board members but 2 will have served in their positions for at least 2 years. For every vacant position that means more work for someone on the current Board. So what can you do about it? VOLUNTEER. It’s not really that hard of a job and if you are interested you can work with a current Board member to transition and have a wonderful satisfying time doing it. So call a Board member and talk to them about their position and if interested work with them for a while and see what is involved.

Open Greenhouses Galore this Month


October 11th is THE day for open greenhouses in Petaluma. Since the Marin Orchid Society sched-uled their greenhouse touring day the same day as the SCOS open greenhouse hosted by Judy Carney, we now have the opportunity to visit three greenhouses:

Judy Carney has a fabulous greenhouse complex consisting of an intermediate house, a brand new cool house, and a shade house area. This is a must see for everyone. Judy is located at 1292 San Jose Way, in east Petaluma, and her phone number is 707-479-5640. Her greenhouses will be open from 12:00 to 4:00PM, and she will have plants for sale.

Dale Martin (Austin Creek Orchids) has a large intermediate greenhouse that also is a must see. He grows a huge variety of orchid species and hybrids, so there will be something for everyone to see. Dale is located at 315 Sprauer Road in west Petaluma, and his phone number is 707-762-0526. He can also be contacted by e-mail at [email protected]. Dale’s greenhouse will be open from 10:00AM to 4:00PM, and he will also have plants for sale.

Jim & Kris Foster, also in west Petaluma, have two intermediate greenhouses. If you missed the BBQ and auction or you just want to visit the greenhouses again, please join them in the morning at 827 Cleveland Ave. in west Petaluma. They can be reached at 707-762-7124 or 707-321-2392. Their greenhouses will be open from 10:00AM to 1:00PM, and they will have plants and supplies for sale.

Annual Barbeque and Auction Wrap-up


Those of you who missed this event certainly missed out on a great time. The good news is that there were a lot of great buys and great food, but the bad new is that everyone was hav-ing such a good time they forgot to take any pictures. The totals and final bills are not all in as of this time but according to our Treasurer we should make between $800 and $1000 af-ter all is settled. This is one of the most successful auctions in recent years. With our newly obtained 501(c)(3) status, future auctions may certainly offer more great deal for our mem-bers and others. There are so many people to thank and acknowledge for their help and do-nations that I am afraid I will forget someone. If I do, please accept my apologies in advance and let me know so I can correct the record.

First of all, THANKS to Earl and Kathy Rathbun for running the silent auction and overall co-ordination of both auctions from setup to final accounting of the receipts. Thanks to Lynne Paulus and Patty Connick for participating as clerks in the live auction and to Jim Foster for volunteering and doing a great job as the auctioneer.

A very special thanks to Judy Carney for procuring the live auction plants and providing both written and oral descriptions of the plants and their culture.

Thanks go to Dale Martin and the Rathbuns for providing additional shade for the plants.

Kudos go to Becky Jackson and the St. John’s United Methodist Church, Steve Tierra, and Larry Mead for their generous contribution of tables and chairs - too bad they weren’t all full.

I personally want to thank Jeanne and Ray Blarcom for providing the PA system - it saved the auctioneer’s voice.

Thanks go out to Marilyn and Gil Barquero, Gordon and Gail Cox, and Kris Foster for obtain-ing donations of wine and private tours/wine tastings for the live auction.

Thanks to Mitch McAlpin and Jim Foster with the sage advise of Frank Carney, who states he knows everything, for cooking up the wonderful tri tip and chicken.

D & D Flowers Fall Open House and Sale

Inventory reduction sale at D & D Flowers Fall Open House on October 4th and 5th, from 9AM until 4PM. There will be specials on hundreds of good plants at $7.50 each. Help your local or-chid society. For every $25 you spend, you may enter your local orchid society in a raffle for their monthly opportunity table. 40 healthy plants (some in bloom) will be award to the winning society. Winning society will be picked at the end of Sunday October 5th. The society must redeem their prize to D & D Flowers by the next open house which will take place in May of 2009.

SONOMA COUNTY ORCHID SOCIETY

The Sonoma County Orchid Society meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month. Plant sales begin at 6:45 p.m. and ends when the speaker begins his/her pres-entation. The Society provides an opportunity for any member to sell plants or ma-terial (with a 25% commission to the Society). A reminder to all members that any plant material offered for sale at the Society meeting, must be run through the Soci-ety. Pre-arranged pick-up of plants or materials is OK and does not have to go through the Society. Plant owners assume all risk and responsibility for their property. Your members binder has additional information.

The Skill Session, when scheduled, is held at 7:00 at the front of the meeting room. The subject will be announced in the newsletter and a sign will be posted at the meeting. Announcements followed by Show and Tell begin at

7:30 p.m. The speaker will begin after Show and Tell (approximately 8:00 p.m.). Re-freshments and opportunity plant drawings occur after the speaker’s lecture.
