Singing mosquitoes from France, an involuntary string quartet from Australia, whispering trumpets from the Netherlands and a multi-media opera set in the UN-policed buffer zone in Cyprus...welcome to the second Sonica in Glasgow.
Sonica was launched in Glasgow in November 2012 and has since toured to Aarhus, Aberdeen, Den Bosch, Edinburgh, Huddersfield, Lulea and Norwich.
Sonica is a programme dedicated to world-class sonic arts, presenting emerging British talent alongside exceptional international artists in collaboration with renowned co-producers and venues. Performances of exceptional and rarely seen work are given a UK platform at Sonica.
Sonica 2013 will present eight UK premières, two Scottish premières and four Sonica commissions as part of one long weekend of sonic art encompassing music, performance, sound, visual art and multimedia.
Highlights include the UK Premiere of Voice, an audio-visual duet by Norwegian artist Maja S K Ratkje and light designer HC Gilje. French artists Robin Meier and Ali Momeni have based their work Truce on the natural behaviour of male and female mosquitoes to "sing" in tune in order to find a partner of the right species type. We are also delighted to be working again with Yannis Kyriakides, presenting his multi-media opera The Buffer Zone for the first time in Scotland which was first seen at hcmf// in 2007.
A special thank you to all our supporters and partners who have made Sonica 2013 possible.

Voice [ UK Première ]
Maja S K Ratkje HC Gilje
Thursday 31 October / 7.30pm / early bird - £8 or full price - £12/£8
Sonica welcomes award winning Norwegian composer and sound sculptress Maja S K Ratkje for her Scottish debut. Ratkje collaborates with visual artist HC Gilje for this stunning audio-visual performance for voice which was first seen in 2012 at Kontraste Festival in Minoretenkirchein Krems, Austria.
The echoing beauty of whistles, growls, clicks and whisper-to-scream exhalations is accompanied by electronics and LED screens in a unique performance.

Anyone who has seen or heard Ratkje perform live will know what a superb musician she is, and one who can genuinely be said to be extending the expressive range of the voice through technical and technological means… Her work is celebratory and inclusive.
The Wire
A musical narrative from whose spell it is hard to escape. The impact of the slightly transcendental and unreal mixture of contemplativeness and degeneration is just too strong.De:Bug
Following the performance there will be a post-show talk.

The Buffer Zone [ Scottish Première ]
Yannis Kyriakides
Friday 1 November / 7.30pm / early bird - £8 or full price - £12/£8
A multimedia, operatic world of division - inspired by the Cyprus UN Buffer Zone - explores the boundaries of separation. Suspended video screens divide the audience and on each side musicians play imaginary duets with virtual instruments alongside a UN soldier who illustrates through movement the absurdity and alienation of the buffer zone. This powerful performance is accompanied by film footage, recordings of UN soldier interviews, the sound of military technology, cello, piano and manipulated voices.

Compositions for Involuntary Strings [ UK Première ]
Michaela Davies
Saturday 2 November / 7.30pm / early bird - £8 or full price - £12/£8
Are the musicians in this ensemble playing - or being played? Davies wires herself and her players to an electronic muscle stimulation system which triggers strange, paroxysmal movements via electrical impulses. She creates compositions which define the minute muscle movements involved in performing pieces of music and transmits this data back to her players via MIDI. For this concert she presents one purely involuntary composition, two co-composed works (with Jim Sclavunos and Kyle Sanna) which also include voluntary players, and a work for solo piano.
Following this performance there will be a post-show talk.

Whispers [ UK Première ]

Thursday 31 October – Saturday 2 November / 12pm – 7pmSunday 3 November 2013 / 12 – 5pm / Free
Thursday 31 October / 6.30pm / Artist talk with Rob van Rijswijk and Jeroen Strijbos / Not ticketed but limited capacity
Whispers is a ceramic sound sculpture of five larger-than-life trumpets – blue and gleaming – floating in a semi-darkened room. The different resonance frequencies of each trumpet form a pentatonic system that is central to the installation. The trumpets spout words, laughter and noise as you map your own auditory route within this three-dimensional soundscape to find out each trumpet’s unique meaning.

Truce is an interactive sound installation exploring a mosquito’s natural synchronisation behaviour highlighting
the musical interactions between insect and computer.
When male mosquitoes change their buzzing frequency to synchronise and match that of a female mosquito, this enhances the mosquitoes’ ability to copulate mid-flight. The computer produces a stimulus sound derived from the North Indian classical vocal tradition of Dhrupad and three mosquitoes independently tune their buzz to the sound.

Commissioned by Cryptic, Walk with Me is a sonic experience. Imagine walking along Sauchiehall Street, hearing the sounds around you change as you move. From one spot to the next sounds differ; but as you approach a corner, or distance yourself from it, the character of what you hear shifts.
Your perception and experience of your surroundings, regardless of how mundane or exceptional they are, change with the modification of their sounds. Hear melodies, chatter and electronica around Glasgow, using GPS data to trigger sounds through a musical iPhone app.
iPhones can be borrowed from the CCA box office, a deposit is required.
Download this app and start walking with us…

Door [ Scottish Première ]
George Higgs
Thursday 31 October / 6pm / FreeFriday 1 November / 1pm / Free
For Sonica, American-born composer George Higgs brings his musical door to Glasgow. Two musicians push the Door through Tramway, stopping periodically to perform their musical composition. The Door is a barrier - yet paradoxically - the musicians communicate musically from cello to bells, gongs to slit drums and cymbals. Listen… at the door.

The EscapementSven Werner
Thursday 31 October - Sunday 3 November / 5pm – 9pm Free / Sven Werner’s Studio
Following the success of Tales of Magical Realism Part I and II, The Escapement is the third and final part of the trilogy. Inspired by Cryptic Associate Sven Werner’s film Oculista, and featuring music by Graeme Miller, The Escapement explores the flow of time and invites the audience to choose between two parallel worlds. In one world you are the voyeur of dreams, reminiscent of Wim Wender’s Wings of Desire. The other world you will discover...
Simultaneously gothic and modern, romantic and grotesque... utterly absorbing art work.Sunday Herald

Cryptic is an internationally-renowned art house, creating a lasting artistic legacy by presenting high-quality, innovative work. Cryptic ‘ravishes the senses’ with performances that fuse music, sonic art and multi-media. Founded in Scotland by Cathie Boyd in 1994, Cryptic presents today’s most imaginative international artists and nurtures the creative talent of tomorrow.
CRYPTIC NEEDS YOU!Cryptic 2014: Twenty years of ravishing the senses. Next year we are celebrating Cryptic’s 20th anniversary of many unique, high quality and memorable productions enjoyed in Scotland and internationally including Parallel Lines, Black over Red, Orlando and most recently Sonica. With your help, we would like you to join us in celebrating this achievement in an even bigger way.
Over ten new projects are being planned for next year with our highlight being Sound to Sea, a large-scale outdoor performance on the River Clyde. Sound to Sea – presented by Glasgow-based charities Cryptic and Glasgow Science Centre – will include live music, fireworks and aerial dance in a performance as part of the Commonwealth Games and Glasgow’s 2014 Cultural Programme.
Only a range of gifts from the modest to the hugely generous will allow us to make this highly visible water performance spectacular – this is where we need you. If you would like to support us and become a part of the creation of a legacy for Glasgow please contact Cathie Boyd, Artistic Director, at [email protected]. Thank you.
