Greeley Country received needed moisture this past week with snow and rain on Wednesday, Feb. 19 and again on Sunday Feb. 23. The Tribune weather station reported 0.25 inches of precipitation at their Thursday morning, Feb. 20 reading and 0.96 inches at the Monday, Feb. 24 reading. The weekly precipitation at the station was 1.21 inches. The total for the first 24 days of Feb. is 1.28 inches compared to a normal for the total month of 0.52 inches. The year- to-date total at the station of 1.69 inches is now 0.77 inches above the normal of 0.92 inches. The past week’s precipitation of 1.21 inches is more than double the previous year-to-date precipitation amount of 0.48 inches. The rain began falling in Tribune on Sunday morning and continued falling throughout the day turning to snow in the late afternoon. The amount of snow on the ground on Monday morning was less than an inch. The snow that fell on Wednesday Feb. 19 accumulated to about 3 inches in Tribune. With the above freezing temperatures the snow rapidly melted. There was very little wind and little drifting during the snow falls on both Wednesday and Sunday. The National Weather Service precipitation maps for the past 7 days showed most of the county with .50 – 1.0 inches of precipitation with 1.0 – 1.5 in the northern tier of the county. On Feb. 24 most of the county received from .50 - .75 inches with the northern tier receiving more from .75 – 1.0 and the far southwest receiving less from .25 - .50. On Feb. 20 most of the county received from .10 -.25 inches of moisture with the west central receiving from .01 – 1.0. The snow and rain over the past week will provide the winter wheat crop in Greeley County with needed moisture. It will greatly improve the prospects for the wheat in the county. The 0.96 inches of gentle rain is unusual for February. One Greeley County farmer remarked, “It’s the best February rain that we have ever had. I think that I will farm another year.” The high temperatures for the past week fell from 49º on Monday, Feb. 18 to a high of 29º on Thursday before climbing back to 60º on Saturday, Feb. 22. The low for the week was 3º on Friday morning.
