Notes ON THE PROGRAM

In John Davies’ paraphrase of the 150th Psalm, each line of text is infused withexultation, which is echoed in the vocal fanfare figures.

—Score notes

DAVID BRUNNER Psalm 150

This text was written by the 19th century geologist James Gates Percival andspeaks of the beauty of nature.

—Score notes

DAVID BRUNNER The World Is Fully of Poetry (from Earthsongs)

A popular Japanese children’s song about fireflies. Listen at the very end for theone who is lagging behind!

—Rō Ogura

Hotaru Koi (Japanese Children’s Song)arr. Rō Ogura

The text appears to be illogical and nonsensical at times, due to its “game of rhymes”in which the final syllables of each line all rhyme with “tends” of “J’entends.”

—Donale Patriquin

DONALD PATRIQUIN J’entends le Moulin

The folksong Turtle Dove is both beau-tiful and alluring because of its poeticimagery. It speaks of the faithfulness oflove to the ends of the earth, when thestars fall from the sky, the rocks meltand the seas dry up. It is a tender and

loving song filled with hope and long-ing. In the end the loving couple arecompared to turtle doves who seem tomoan for the loss of their loved ones.

Working at an investment company inNew York, Carmichael was composingin his spare time and wrote Georgia onMy Mind at the suggestion of friendand saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer, sometimes credited with being the“grandfather of modern jazz.”Supposedly Trumbauer told him,

“Nobody ever lost money writingsongs about the South.” Carmichaelfollowed the advice, with StuartGorrell thinking of of the title and help-ing with the lyrics.

In Music Down In My Soul, Hoganreally gives us two spirituals. The workis not so much an arrangement of anold work as much as a mostly newcomposition inspired by the older spir-itual Over My Head. From a gospelchordal beginning to a flowing, other-

worldly meditation to a roof raising,hand-clapping finish, Hogan digs deepand helps you find the “music down inmy soul.” In 2003 Hogan died at theage of 46.

Beethoven’s first major choral work, the oratorio Christus am Oelberge(The Mount of Olives), Op. 85, waswritten in only two weeks in early1803. The first performance took place

on April 5 of that year at the Theateran der Wien (Vienna) where Beethovenhad lodgings and where he held the titleof Conductor at the time. The work isnot performed as a whole very often in

The Sanskrit text of Gate Gate whichappears at the end of thePrajnaparamita Heart Sutra, is general-ly regarded as the essence of Buddhistteaching. Gate means gone. Gone fromsuffering to the liberation of suffering.Gone from forgetfulness to mindful-ness. Gone from duality to non-duality.Gate gate means gone, gone. Paragatemeans gone all the way to the othershore. Gone, gone, gone all the way

over. In Parasamgate, sam meanseveryone, the entire community ofbeings. Everyone gone over to the othershore. Bodhi is the light inside, enlight-enment, or awakening. And svaha is acry of joy or excitement, like“Halleluia!” Gone, gone, gone all theway over, everyone gone to the othershore, enlightenment, svaha!

“Come and sing a new song to theLord, for He hath done marvelousthings. His right hand and His holyarm hath gotten us the victory.”Heinrich Schutz was one of the mostsignificant composers of the GermanBaroque period, writing almost exclu-

sively for the church. He composed thismotet in 1628 for soprano, alto andbaritone voices. Today, you hear it insoprano I, II and alto ranges, a majorthird higher. The brilliance of counter-point, along with the German textmake it a fitting, praiseful piece.

This exquisite two-part piece is thoughtto have been the text of a poem foundin a child’s jacket. The jacket wasstripped off a young Jewish girl aboutto enter the ovens during World War II.Having faith without sight, gripping

onto hope without any presence ofhumanity produces something inde-scribable, unless one experiences some-thing similar as an inner revelation. Wetrust you will be inspired by this pow-erful yet simple composition.

KATHY BOWEN I Believe in God

‘Have courage, my soul, and let us jour-ney on.’ There is a message for the agesfrom this traditional African Americangospel piece. Barbara Baker, who

resides in Maryland, arranged thiscomposition in memory of her mother,Graeber Wesley. Please enjoy this ener-gizing song of hope!

Widmung is a very popular Germanlove song, from Robert Schumann’s‘Leider.’ The text speaks of a deep andintense love: “You are my soul, myheart, my pain; you are my joy in sunand rain. You are my world, I live inyou; my heaven you, my spirit too. Oh

you, my grave in which so deep, mysorrow lies for you to keep.” Writtenin 1840, ‘Widmung’ was one of thenearly one hundred love songs Robertwrote the year of his long-delayed wed-ding to Clara Wieck. Charming!

Katharine Bates, at the age of 33, was anEnglish professor at Wellesley College. One summer, she took the train toColorado Springs. On the journey, shewitnessed the alabaster buildings ofChicago, the wheat fields of Kansas andsaw the Great Plains from Pikes Peak.Moved with emotion and a love forAmerica, Katharine composed this poem.Samuel Ward read the text, and com-

posed this hymn tune while on a ferryfrom Coney Island to New York City. Soanxious was he to write the music down,he actually sketched the notes on afriend’s shirt cuff. The text of ‘Americathe Beautiful’ as you hear it today, wasadapted in 1911. David Fischer com-posed this four part treble arrangementupon Lori Loftus’ request in 2000. It hasbeen an inspiration ever since.

Psalm 150DAVID BRUNNER

To Him with trumpets and with flutesWith cornets, clarions, and with lutes,With harps, with organs, and with shawms,With holy anthems and with psalms.

With voice of angels and of men,Sing Alleluia; amen, amen. With voice of angels and of men,Sing Alleluia; amen, amen.

The World is Full of Poetry (from Earthsongs)

The world is full of poetry; the air is living with its spirit,And the waves dance to the music of its melodies,And sparkle in its brightness.

Hotaru Koi (Japanese Children’s Song)arr. Rō Ogura

Ho, ho, hotaru koi,Atchi no mizu wanigaizo,Kotchi no mizu wa amaizo.

Ho, ho, hotaru koiHo, ho, yamamichi koi.Hotaru no otosan kanemochi da,Dori de oshiri ga pikapika da.Ho, ho, hotaru koi, Yama michi da. Hiruma wa kusabano tsuyu no kage,Yoru wa ponpon taka chochiin.

Tenjiku a gari shitareba,Tsunbakura ni sarawarebe.

Ho, ho, ho firefly, Come, there’s some water that’s bitter totaste.

Come, here’s some water that’s sweet tothe taste.

Ho, ho, ho firefly,Ho, ho, up this mountain path.Firefly’s daddy struck it rich, so he’s gotlots of dough.

No wonder his rear end sparkles in thedark!

Ho, ho, ho firefly,Up this mountain path. In the daytime hiding amongst thedewy-blades of grass,

But when it’s night, his lantern burnsbright.

E’en though we’ve flown all the wayfrom India,

Zoom! And those sparrows swarm toswallow us.

Page 9: Songs of Inspiration and Hope

Ho, ho hotaru koi,Atchi no mizu wa nigaizo.Ho, ho hotarukoi,Kotchi no mizu wa amai zo;Ho, ho hotaru koi,Ho, ho y ama michi koi,Ho, ho, ho.

Ho, ho, ho firefly, Come, there’s some water that’s bitter totaste,

Ho, ho, ho firefly,Come, here’s some water that’s sweet tothe taste;

Ho, ho, ho firefly,Up this mountain path,Look! See a thousand lanterns sparklingin the dark,

Ho, ho, ho firefly,Ho, ho up this mountain path,Ho, ho, ho.

I hear the millwheel tique tique taque. My father is having a house built. It’s being built with three gables. There are three carpenters building it.The youngest is my darling.

What do you have in your apron? It’s a pie made of three pigeons.Let’s sit down and eat it.

While sitting down they all lept up,Causing the sea and fish to tremble,And the stones on the bottom of the sea.

Turtle Dove (English Folk Song)arr. Earlene Rentz

Fare you well, my dear, I must be gone,And leave you for awhile. If I roam away, I’ll come back again,Though I roam ten thousand miles, my dear.

So fair you are my bonny lass,So deep in love am I;But I never will prove false to the bonny lass I love,Till the starts fall from the sky, my dear.

The seas will never run dry my love,Nor the rocks melt with the sun,But I never will prove false to the bonny lass I love,Till all these things be done my dear.

O yonder does sit that little turtle dove,And he sits on yonder high tree,A making a moan for the loss of his love,As I will do for you, my dear.

Georgia on My MindSTUART GORRELL & HOAGY CARMICHAEL

Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through.Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.Georgia, Georgia, a song of you.Comes as sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines.

Other arms reach out to me; other eyes smile tenderly;Still in peaceful dreams I see the road leads back to you.

Georgia, Georgia, no peace I find,Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.

Music Down in My Soul (African-American Spiritual)arr. Moses Hogan

I hear music in the air. I can feel it in the air. There must be a God somewhere.

Over my head I hear music in the air, there must be a God somewhere.Over my head I hear music in the air, there must be a God somewhere.

I got this music down in my soul and it fills my heartwith the joy of the Lord!I’ve got joy – I’ve got it, joy everlasting!I’ve got peace – I’ve got it, peace everlasting!I’ve got love – I’ve got it, love everlasting!

Love in my heart,Oh yes I got peace in my soul.Oh yes I got joy in my heart, joy today!

Do you love the Lord? I love the Lord!I got joy! I got peace! I got love! In my soul!

CarrickfergusIrish, arr. Sean Ivory

I wish I was in CarrickfergusOnly for nights in Ballygrant.I would swim over the deepest oceanOnly for nights in Ballygrant.

But the sea is wide and I can’t swim over,Nor have I the wings to fly!If I could find me a handsome boatsmanTo ferry me over to my love to die.

Now in Kilkenny they have reportedMarble stones as black as night. With gold and silver I would transport themTo the bonny homeland that was my delight.

Tho’ I’m here today I’ll be gone tomorrow,A handsome rover from town to town.Oh I’ve grown old now, my days are over.Come all you young lads and lay me down.

Amor de mi Alma (You Are the Love of My Soul)Z. RANDALL STROOPE

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah to the Fatherand the Son, the Son of God.hallelujah,to the Son, the Son of God.

Praise the Lord, ye everlasting choir,in holy songs of joy,in holy songs of joy, in holy songs of joy.

Worlds unborn shall sing His glory, the exalted, the exalted, the exalted Son of God, the Son of God.

I was born to love only you;My soul has formed you to its measure;I want you as a garment for my soul.

Your very image is written on my soul;Such indescribable intimacyI hide even from you.

All that I have, I owe to you;For you I was born, for you I live,For you I must die, and for you I give mylast breath.
