    1ST STANZA

The poet indicates that finding a true woman is

same as finding a falling star.

It is not in our hand to get what we desire.

Moments of one life will just pass by.

Women are tainted by sins and imperfection.

There is no perfect women and to find one, will be something impossible.

    2ND STANZA

In order to find an ideal woman, one should go

    for a quest.

Still, it will be impossible to find the perfect

    woman.

We can travel as far as we want but will never

find a true and fair woman.

Go and catch a falling star.

Get with child a mandrake root,

Tell me where all past years are,

Or who cleft the devils foot,

Teach me to hear mermaids singing,

Or to keep off envys stinging,

    And find,

    What wind

Serves to advance an honest mind

If thou best born to strange sights,Things invisible to see,

Ride ten thousand days and nights,

Till age snow white hairs on thee,

Thou, when thou returnst, wilt tell me,All strange wonders that befell thee,

    And swear

    No where

    Lives a woman true,and fair

If thou findst one, let me know,

    Such a pilgrimage were sweet.

Yet do not; I would not go,

Though at next door we might meet.

Though she were true when you met her,

And last, till you write your letter,

    Yet she

    Will be

False, ere I come, to two, or three

    ISSUES

  • 7/28/2019 Song Complete

    24/28

    1) Finding perfect woman is

    impossible.

John Donne compares two journeys to

    portrays the impossibility :

    i) Journey to find a perfect woman

ii) Journey to accomplish the impossible things

    he mentioned in the poem

Go and catch a falling star Get with child a mandrake root find what wind will advance an honest mind

    2) Perfect woman does not exist

No where lives a woman true, and fair- In most cases while searching for a perfect

    mate, we notice that

    i) If a woman is true (faithful), she has negativephysical attributes.

ii) If a woman is fair (beautiful), she is not

trustworthy.* John Donne believed that it would be

impossible to find someone who is both.

    3) Infidelity & prostitution

she will be false, ere I come, to two, or three- This issue applies to any period of time.

    - It is hard to find a pure woman.
